For Ephemera Friday, weāre taking a drive along the mid-century Malibu coast through a collection of vintage matchbooks.
Bright illustrations, tiny road maps, palm trees, swimming pools, and plenty of lobsters promoted destinations like the Lindomar Lodge, the Albatross Hotel, Las Flores Inn, and the Malibu Sea Lion. Once handed out as disposable advertisements, these matchbooks now preserve traces of institutions shaped by the changing world that housed them. The matchbooks belong to the Eric Wienberg Collection of Malibu Matchbooks, Postcards, and Ephemera at Pepperdine Libraries Special Collections and Archives.
Read more about the history hidden inside these matchbooks in āMalibu in Matchbooks: Clues to a Lost Coastā from JSTOR Daily.
