The Process of Warding
I will not be sharing my exact process for the creation of wards, nor will I describe in detail the wards I use most often. However, I am happy to share with all of you the fundamentals of proper warding, as I have learned them. The great hindrances of warding come from the ideology used, and the essences contributing. If you envision a wall around yourself, any spirit sufficiently motivated can attack from above, or can hurl attacks over it like a catapult. If you resolve this by envisioning a dome, the spirits can still work from beneath. While the ground resists a direct attack, it is a trifling matter for spirits to simply pass through solid matter, as they are not themselves material. By this means they can enter your dome-shaped ward and assault you. One would think to use a perfect sphere, so that this ground assault is not possible. However, the very idea that you are enclosing yourself entirely means that you are psychologically limiting your own ability to feed on energies outside the barrier, or to counter-attack through it. Keep your mind open to the possibilities, as to how you can form an intact barrier and yet not limit your own offensive abilities.
Also harmful are the common assumptions/instructions that prayer to any one or combination of gods, invoking their names, or envisioning a âperfect, pure, white lightâ is enough to repel anything with ease. Spirits that know of and respect your deity may stand down just from hearing the name, or realizing that youâre invoking that deity. Even if they do not, your deity will have to either intervene directly, or provide you with sufficient power, to repulse the attack. This is a limited measure, not an automatic victory. As for âwhite light,â there are many spirits that feed on that construct, ignore it, or otherwise will not be affected by so basic a construct. Learn to defend yourself properly, and then count on your deities (if any) to embolden those defenses further.
Physical essence is a great tool for warding, whether you are using material objects or not. Even a small amount of material (like a circle of chalk or charcoal) can be invaluable to guiding your mental processes. However, it is very difficult to call up effectively, very difficult to mold, and extremely difficult to alter once it has taken shape. These are all problems you do not want to face when engaged in the light-speed defense against a spiritual being. If youâre going to use it, be sure to make proper use of Conscious essence for the conjuring, Psychic essence for the molding, and Vital essence for both.
Conscious essence alone is more likely to empower incoming attacks, or feed your enemy, than it is to protect you from them. However, you can form warding constructs out of physical or Vital essence with a base of Conscious essence. It will sustain and grow them instead of the enemy.
Psychic essence is valuable as a defense, but you have to master the sufficient Conscious and Vital essences needed to make effective use of it, the iron will needed to direct it where you want it to go, and the physical resources to maintain such a defense.
Vital essence of itself is a poor choice for warding, but it is instrumental to the construction and maintenence of good wards.
You must also construct a system of warding that is dynamic and renewable, rather than trying to make a single, invulnerable barrier. Leave the same ward as-is for long enough, and people will find ways through it. Or it will just degrade over time. Instead of trying to make a ward that does not respond when hit, make one that punishes the aggressor for hitting it.
On a closing note, spirit communication should be handled in a similar fashion to combat. Have the proper wards in place, have a strategy for engagement in mind, and create sensors external to your wards. The last step is critical, because proper warding can make it difficult to communicate effectively with those you do not let through. Because of this, you will want a system in place where even something that gives you respectful distance has a way to communicate without trying to beam signals through your wards. Make sure these sensors are not tied directly to you, but record information that you can decide if you want to engage with.
now that iâve begun working more with energy, i wanted to share my methods of casting circles! when i first started working with energy, it was really hard to find references for casting circles, especially ones not dealing with the traditional Wiccan god/goddess. here are some methods and uses of casting circles!
Why Cast a Circle?
the primary reason i cast circles is to protect me from outside energy influences. most people associate circles to protection from âmalevolentâ spirits, however, itâs just a great barrier in general!
here are some following scenarios i cast circles:
divination- to protect me from energies that might influence my cards or my interpretation o the cards
spellwork- pretty self-explanatory. i cast circles to protect from energies i donât want in my spells, or from potential spirit attraction.
meditation- again, for energy use and to also not be disturbed from anything spiritual.
Methods of Casting
1 - Invoking Elements
a very basic way, if not the go-to way, of casting is to place each of the four elements at each of the cardinal directions. Earth at the north, Air in the east, Fire at the south, and Water in the west.
fire
Candles (color them for intent if used in a spell! alternatively, electric tea lights work fine.)
here is a post about color associations for candles!
Anything symbolic of fire colors (red or warm-colored cloth, figures/statues,etc.)
water
moon/sun water (in a jar works really well, or in an open container if being used for blessing anything)
blessed water, or water related to whatever youâre working with (storm water, diluted essential oils, etc).
here is a good source of different kinds of water and how to cleanse them!
blue or purple colored items
earth
stones or crystals (this is what i love to use! just be wary that some stones are aligned with other elements. clear quartz is a go-to.)
salt
dirt (from your backyard or specific, such as hospital or graveyard. make sure to cleanse it.)
herbs (especially roots)
brown or black colored items
air
incense (different scents have uses as well!)
here is a post with scent correspondences!
steam
yellow or white colored items
alternatively, any of these could be replaced with a tarot card of the corresponding suit! (wands for fire, cups for water, pentacles for earth, and swords for air).
to close the circle, walk clockwise starting in the east (air) and complete a full walk around the circle. do this as many times as you feel needed to envision a complete circle! after your use for it is done, unwind it by walking the same number of times counter-clockwise.
note: if you live in the southern hemisphere, you may want to reverse fire and earth in your directions and walk counter-clockwise to close the circle, and clockwise to end it.
2 - Envisioning
this is a very, very simple way to cast a circle! if you have very little time, simply imagine a ring of light around your workspace. you could align color to purpose as well.
the only downsides to this method include the fact that it may not be as strong as a physical circle for beginners especially, as i have learned many times over as i find energy that i donât want in the circle. on top of this, to make it very successful, you may have to keep this image in your head throughout your spell or energy work, which may distract or hurt your concentration.
however, like i said before, itâs very easy, discreet, and requires no clean up! with practice, it could be very easy to maintain.
3 - Salt Circle
by simply spreading salt in a circle clockwise (or counter-clockwise depending on your location), you can create a strong barrier. as you walk around, envision your purpose of protection and safety.
if you are working outside, do not use salt. it will kill plant life! instead, consider alternatives such as: egg shells, diluted salt water, crushed herbs, flower petals, etc.
if working inside, consider setting out foil, cloth, or a tarp for easy cleanup.Â
4 - Cleansing the Room Itself
if you find that you for some reason cannot cast a circle, or maybe are just starting out, consider cleansing the entire room instead!
some methods include:
smoke cleansing (NOT smudging. please do not call this action smudging unless it is part of YOUR culture.)
salt or protective mixture
dance/song
salt/water spray
incense and candles
for smoke cleansing, light your bundle and start facing eastward, spreading the smoke and asking for protection from either the corresponding element or any deities/spirits/etc. you worship. move clockwise or counterclockwise.
for salt or protection mixtures, simply place a small pile in each corner of the room or at the cardinal directions.
dance and song can celanse the room when accompanied with smoke especially.Â
the salt water spray can be used similar to the protection mixture â spray a little in each corner or at the cardinal directions.
incense and candles can be placed in corners, the directions, or just throughout the room to act as protective energy.
Final Notes
make sure to remove your circle after youâre done!! leaving it up isnât safe and could be draining on your energy or health.
try not to leave the circle in the middle of your work, if it can be avoided. ive had to do it before and nothing bad happened, but sometimes it ocould break the circle, or bring unwanted energy or precense in.
do your absolute best to have all your materials in the circle before you cast it. bringing items that were not in the circle before could carry energy that you just do not want in your circle. iâve messed up plenty spells because of it already. if it is really necessary, cleanse the item as thoroughly as you can (quickly if you need to), and enter the circle from the east.
if these methods donât work right away, donât worry! these take lots of practice. some easy ways to try casting daily include:
cast a circle before you meditate
cleanse your room before you do homework for a safe space to work
if you have a form of divination, cast a circle before drawing a daily reading (i do this in the morning to see how the day will go or seek advice for the day!).
good luck!
Magick: Guide To learning
This post is not entirely completed but it is a rough outline of how I would go about setting up this system. It will be added to as I find more information.
This is a general guide for magick based on my understandings and practices and what I have found to be helpful at each level of development. This scale starts at absolute no knowledge, and goes up to an individual with a practice that can now expand outwards learning everything. This is not done with any other form of tradition rather than mine, and is based on the general understanding of magick, and is to better help with understanding the question of where do I start. you do not need to finish everything in one stage before moving onto another one. what is recommended that you finish as much as possible, because one stage feeds on to the next one. This post is also broken up into my categories of magic. These being Pyrosophic, geosophic, hydrosophic, and aerosophic.
Pyrosophic:
Pyrosophic is associated to the element of fire. Pyrosophic forms of magick, and understanding are fundamental, and active. They are sources that emanate outwards, and act as axioms, and supports for other knowledge, and practices. They are simple, but effective, and are the first things I believe a practitioner should know when they are starting out learning magick. Pyrosophic is very knowledge-based, and energetically based, and it is the foundation that we build upon all other knowledge. It is the first emanation of any particular knowledge, before it incorporates any other advanced features. It contains a lot of beginner information, and energy work.
Geosophic:
Geosophic is associated to the element of earth. Geosophic are things that are a little bit more complicated, and work off the understandings that are figured out in pyrosophic. It takes the fundamental understandings, and gives you tools in order to advance what you already have. Geosophic builds upon the foundation that was solidified by pyrosophic, and makes it a little bit more complicated bringing in object, symbols, and correspondences to work with. A lot of forms of folk magic, and thaumaturgy are going to be here in this category, because of its incorporation of tools, and symbols to manifest itâs desires.
Hydrosophic:
Hydrosophic is associated to the element of water. Hydrosophic focuses on internal knowledge through the acts of meditation, and altered states of consciousness. It allows you to learn more about yourself, and the inner workings of you through the practices, and understandings that it holds. This encompasses everything that takes place within, and that interacts with the inner being that is you.
Aerosophic:
Aerosophic is associated to the element of air. Aerosophic encompasses understandings, and the practices of theurgy, and the higher knowledge of the universe, and source. It is focused on understanding the outer world beyond the practitioner. This encompasses everything that takes place without, and looks for the higher meaning in the whole of reality.
Once you reach the final level of adept you are able to go out, and begin staying in learning even more knowing that you have the foundations of a practice. Other things you may also want to learn about that may help you on your path are Philosophy, Science, History, Psychology, Religious Studies, language, and culture.
There are three stages to this process, and they are known as seekers, student, and adapt.
