having binge-watched BoJack Horseman the number of times that I have I now have these little theories about specific lines of dialogue. basically my theory is that they were originally some sort of animal-related figure of speech that had to be changed when someone realized âwait that doesnât make sense in this universeâ
like when Alex said that capitalism is âlike a snake that eats itself.â normally the way I hear the expression is âa snake that eats its own tailâ but since all animals in the BoJack universe are anthropomorphized and donât have tails (including snakes) someone on the writing team was like âwait snakes donât have tails we gotta change thatâ
or when Hollyhock said âI feel like I have tiny little bumps crawling around underneath my skinâ I get the feeling it was originally âI feel like I have bugs crawling around underneath my skinâ as thatâs normally how Iâve heard that sensation described, even in, like, a medical context. but then the writers were like âwait bugs are human-sized in this universe so that doesnât make senseâ and they changed it to âtiny bumpsâ
