i have very strong emotions about elsen. can you imagine being so terrified of everything. so terrified at even the CHANCE of having a bad experience that you won’t even take a book off a shelf in case it had a sad ending. so terrified of even a balloon popping. do you think they know about burnt? do you think that’s why they’re afraid? is it their mortality that terrifies them?

i know it’s kind of a very surface level reading compared to other theories about what OFF is about but i find the angle of a biblical apocalypse really compelling to explore. just like. the elsen are the most drastic caricature of humanity. everything they do is driven by trying to live as long as possible, avoiding stress, constantly seeking comfort in a world that makes them feel small and insignificant. they will do anything to make life more bearable. the guardians, which i suppose could represent any general figure in power, began their utopias with good intentions, but putting the power of a god in the hands of a mortal is the worst mistake anyone could make. and by the time the batter arrives in these zones, he sees the consequences.

dedan’s belief that hard work could give meaning to ones life left the elsen overworked, desperate for better conditions and rest. japhets belief that safety and leisure is all one needs to be happy made the elsen so overly sheltered that even tiny bits of excitement or risk terrify them. enoch tried to provide a solution to his people’s peril, but in making it a commodity, the elsen consumed it in excess whenever possible, fearing they may not find release otherwise.

the elsen are human, like us. but their dire circumstances make them husks of what humanity really was. they are humanity viewed through a peephole, humanity viewed through the looking glass of a god. or the memory of a frightened child.
