So this is a project i was working on in my class! I’m gonna leave my artist statement below! let me know what you guys think of this!
At the very beginning of developing my theme, I had a decent grasp of the path I wanted to go. After working on my theme, I was able to broaden it and find a more clear path to go about. Once I started the thumbnails, the theme really started to take life through my drawings. My theme went from "How to be Anti-Racist" to "Social Justice" to "How to help move Social Justice Agendas forward." That means my theme was somewhat specific then transformed into a more broad theme and then I specified it slightly.
After deciding on a preliminary theme, I worked on the mind map to get the ideas flowing about possible routes I could go with for my pieces. From the mind map, I drew up multiple thumbnails exploring the ideas I made in the mind map. When creating the pieces, I first found a thumbnail that I wanted to expand upon. I, then, drew a sketch of that thumbnail and added more details to it. I worked on that sketch until I felt like it was good to go. Then, I went back and made lineart for that piece and meticulously checked for errors within the lineart. Lastly, I went back in and added color to the piece.
For the first piece, the thought behind it was the oppression of black people. The thought behind the second piece is to support black businesses. For the third piece, the thought behind it is the importance of following important voices. The thought behind the fourth piece is to uplift important voices. The thought of the fifth piece is helping promote anti-racism through online means. The thought behind the sixth piece is to educate yourself about important issues. The thought behind the seventh piece is to become a better person. Lastly, the thought behind the forth piece is about how black voices can/are silenced within our society.
