( Revised and fixed version of my previous statement )
While I don’t really feel like I should explain myself as a latin american with indigenous descent. I still feel like I should explain my reasoning behind why I’m making Natlan based around Aztec culture. There seems to be some arguments in the wiki about the actual “lore” and where the region is actually inspired from. But I have many thoughts and opinions so I feel like I should address that before anyone tries to argue with me.
What we know is that it’s based around pre-colonized america. But this is a very wide array of cultures and Mesoamerican cultures shouldn’t be blended for “aesthetic”.
It’s not right, it’s almost as if saying “all indigenous cultures are the same”. It’s an insanely toxic and very colonial centric mindset. There were many different cultures in every country (some popularly known examples; Inka, Mayan, Aztec / Mexica.) And to make things clear. THESE. ARE. NOT. ALL. MEXICO. Natlan isn’t Mexico.
Mexico is a product of colonization.
Natlan, is a word that comes from the language nahuatl. a language that originates from aztec culture. This is my central thought as to why I want to base my Natlan lore. I want to represent one culture, I can’t simply watch an array of amazing ancient civilizations and cultures be put in a blender and sit back like it’s okay. Because its not.
This blog will have heavy referencing to aztec mythology, as well as traditions and culture on itself. ( Since I basically have to build the Natlan lore from the scraps we have as of now )
While i understand that pre-columbian american could also include native american indigenous cultures, I am once again stating; I’m basing this culture off of Aztec culture because of the use of nahuatl in the name of the region.
While I am open to criticism or advice. I won’t take unrequested advice unless the person it comes from is of indigenous descent.
TLDR: I’m making this blog because representation of indigenous cultures means a lot to me. I want to do it right and I want to really focus my passion of my roots and blend this with something that I really enjoy.
