Chase: happy bday hot stuffffffff xoxoxoxoxo
.ailenefr:
Ailene wasn’t so much embarrassed by Chase’s singing as she was simply surprised, she actually hadn’t expected him to sing let alone loudly and right at that moment in the middle of the shop. Before it had seemed like the lessons were just a chore to him, that he needed to pick a teacher and get it done with, but now she could see that he did have some rhythm and enjoyment for music, and that always made her job easier. There were plenty of children that she instructed that were there because their parents wanted them to be, and she would try her best to help them love music like she did since it meant so much to her.
That plus his insistence to buy her a cup of coffee made her feel like she’d misread him at first, and she felt a little guilty for it. Her parents had raised her better than to judge a book by it’s cover, so to speak, and you really couldn’t claim to know someone after one conversation, could you? She hoped not, given how rambly and nervous she could be upon first meeting. There was no way the other customers hadn’t heard his singing but the loud, booming laugh he let out after she sang her line distracted her from caring, and she watched amusedly as he bounced around in his chair as if it had been the funniest thing in the world.
“Aw fuck, tha’s a relief,” she said lightheartedly, actually quite pleased that he’d said so. No matter how much she liked to convince herself that she didn’t care about other people’s approval, it still made her light up when they did give it to her.
He started off after that and she listened intently, watching silently as he dumped sugar into his coffee and leaned forward at the table. So, he was trying to impress a girl. She grinned at that, a list of songs already flooding her thoughts as he casually asked her for ideas. “Oh, well, there’s so many things y’could sing!” she said, nodding. “I guess it jus’ depends, I know people sing songs tha’ the other person likes or maybe a song about why y’like her, y’know?” she said, taking another sip of her coffee.
It was a little weird that he didn’t know what kind of music the girl liked but she figured that maybe wasn’t something made obvious when getting to know someone, not like Ailene did anyway. “Well, tha’s alright, surely she’ll appreciate th’sentiment an’ all tha’ either way?”
Chase watched with a sly smile as Ailene ate up his words, processing the lie that he had fed her and validating it as a truth. He supposed he should feel bad about how immoral the whole thing was, especially when he was in the temple of Good Ethics with Father Billy watching him warily from behind the coffee counter. He cheekily wiggled his fingers in his cousin’s direction.
“Plenty of songs, hm?” he echoed, watching as Ailene practically bounced in her seat. He wondered if any of the sugar sachets he’d poured across the table top had accidentally ended up in her own drink. Shrugging off the thought, he figured that the woman could make herself useful and help him come up with a song to play for Lena. Dubstep and his own compositions probably weren’t the most romantic as he doubted that jamming out a tune which spoke highly of the joyride you got from taking MDMA in a dance club was an appropriate seduction technique.
He wasn’t sure what the hell kind of music girls liked Lena liked but she could be anything from a Taylor Swift fan to a closet Skrillex groupie. That meant he had to move swiftly on and entertain the second option.
“Hmm, songs about what I like about her. God, there’s just… so many,” he lied, leaning back in his wheelchair and playing with the visor of his snapback, tilting it up and down as he deliberated.
He doubted there were many songs out there with lyrics fitting for his situation. How did you melodically find a tune to match the words ‘I’m trying to sleep with you because my friends dared me to’, anyway? Asking Ailene a question like that would surely blow his cover.
“I’m sure she will,” he agreed before tilting his head to the side.
“How would you go about this? Ever played for a cute guy? Cute girl? Surely that’s how you win them over,” he teased her.
.ailenefr:
Ailene couldn’t help but let out a laugh at his attempt to copy her accent, putting a hand over her mouth so she didn’t disturb anyone near them. She’d never been fond of her laugh and was further convinced that it was akin to a noise a seal might make after Clint had told her just that, and even though she knew now that he was a fucknut she still couldn’t let go of that insecurity. She cleared her throat quietly and glanced around briefly, hoping nobody had noticed and turning back to Chase, hoping that he wouldn’t think it was horrific either. She was probably blowing this already. Fuck’s sake.
It seemed like he’d decided that she’d do, though, and he nodded firmly before hollering across the shop to a very cross looking Billy about coffee and she awkwardly averted her gaze down to her hand, rubbing absentmindedly at a spot on one of her tattoos that Kara had coloured in with magic marker while Chase attempted to get the other man’s attention. Billy wasn’t making any move to give in to his summons though, and soon enough Simon was turning towards them with an inquiring look on his face, and Ailene gave him a warm if not slightly apologetic smile when he made his way over to their table.
The other man continued yelling even though Simon was right next to him and Ailene vaguely wondered if his singing voice was anything similar to that, and when he started snapping and motioning for Simon to take her order as well she cursed under her breath before she could stop herself. “Er, jus’ a cup o’coffee would be great, Simon, thanks.” she said, looking up with a surprised expression when Chase told her it was on him. “Oh. Well— tha’s nice of ye.” she said after a moment, giving him a genuine grin.
After she asked what kind of music he’d want to learn she wondered what he might say, if he’d pick some ridiculous song just to fuck with her or if he actually had something in mind, though she did already know how to play Slim Shady on the piano so maybe her repertoire wasn’t as limited as she was thinking. He definitely didn’t seem the sort to want to learn any of the Disney sheet music she had collected for Sutton though, and she was glad she hadn’t suggested that right off the bat.
“Hotline Bling?” she said amusedly, taking her coffee and muttering her thanks to Simon as he hurried away from them which she didn’t entirely blame him for, especially when Chase began banging on the table and loudly belting out the lyrics to the song in question. It was hard not to laugh at the sight in front of her and she ducked her head a little so no one would hear her, reaching out to move her coffee so it wouldn’t spill.
Suddenly he was pointing at her and she looked at him for a moment before determining that he was serious, and she cleared her throat quickly before tapping the table with her own hand, thought a lot quieter than he had. “That can only mean one thing,” she followed, pausing after the line and giving him a sheepish look.
Ailene’s surprise when he offered to buy her coffee, just proved that he was doing an excellent job of coming across like a right prick. He’d never been one to look for other people’s approval, even if they were cute, Irish piano teachers. Still, for the moment, he was willing to be polite and mannerable if it helped him win the bet against Chet and Trent.
The coming and going of Simon broke his focus and he blamed that on his lack of ability to carry a tune. People were staring now, swivelling in their chairs to get a glance at the obnoxiously singing boy who was brazen enough to clatter his spoon off the table in the mimicry of a bassline. He didn’t care if they stared though, preferring wide eyes being trained at him for something like this than the looks he got when he tried to push through crowds, earning annoyed exclamations before people quietened themselves upon seeing his chair. He didn’t want people to feel sorry for him or look at him like he was abnormal – unless of course he was purposefully drawing attention to himself like he was right now.
He continued to prod the spoon slash makeshift microphone in Ailene’s direction, having never been one to relent easily. He expected a surprised widening of her eyes or a soft blush, not for her to lean in and finish off the lyric, albeit a lot quieter than he had.
At once, a whoop of laughter burst from Chase and he threw his head back, one hand flying to his snapback in order to stop it from toppling off. He hadn’t expected that, but the laughter that continued to bubble in his throat gave way to how funny he thought it was. His chuckles were usually snide and reserved for people tripping in the street or enduring a public break up. But Ailene had somehow managed to catch him by surprise with her gentle rhythmic tapping and only slightly reluctant willingness to finish off the song for him.
Forcing himself to calm down, he grinned at Ailene across the table and eventually nodded.
“Okay, okay, you’ll definitely do,” he acquiesced. The woman, he supposed, was definitely in his good graces now. Who knew that all it would take was a lack of hesitancy to sing along to Drake for her to wriggle away in there?
“Anyway, down to business,” he declared, tearing open sugar packets and emptying them into the mug of coffee that Simon had deposited in front of them. He cupped his hands around the mug, letting the heat of it warm up his palms as he caught Ailene’s eye.
“So, basically, I’m trying to impress some chick. I don’t actually know what sort of music she likes, but I dunno, surely you’ve had people like me before,” he reasoned. “Any ideas?”

Chase: lmao happy bday get rekt
.ailenefr:
Her smile faltered a little when she spotted the glare on his face at the fact that she’d moved the chair out of the way for him, and she hoped that hadn’t been presumptuous of her to do. She just figured it’d be easier, not taking into account that he many not have wanted her help, and averted her gaze down to the table guiltily hoping that he wouldn’t be upset with her. While she thought it was just the polite thing to do he might feel differently, and she should have thought about that beforehand.
Luckily he didn’t seem upset, at any rate he didn’t say anything, though he did seem vaguely disinterested in the conversation at hand and she shifted in her seat awkwardly. He clearly knew Billy, that was obvious now, given the glances he was throwing in their direction and the blunt way by which the boy in front of her responded, and she figured they were just good friends. Joe and Levi teased each other in a similar way all the time, though, so maybe they were related, but she didn’t much feel like asking.
He’d missed her question as his attention had been quickly turned to the man at the counter and she sat quietly until he turned back to her, answering with a casual shrug and stating that he wanted to be a ‘piano man’ and she gave him a small smile. “I suppose so, tha’s what I’ve heard anyway.” she said, wondering if he had someone in mind that he wanted to impress and that’s why he’d called for a lesson. “I don’t see why not. Everyone likes music, righ’?” she said, recalling Alice talking to her for a solid half hour once about how Jay played the guitar and following it with a hasty ‘whatever, though’ once she spotted the look on Ailene’s face.
It startled her slightly when he suddenly let out a laugh and she watched hesitantly as he instead asked her if she could play. “Well, yeah. It’d be a bit shite of me t’put out flyers sayin’ I could teach if I couldn’t actually.” she said slowly, a slightly questioning look on her face, though she perked back up when he smiled at her across the table. She liked to think that since Clint she’d gotten much better at reading people, she enjoyed being friendly but there was a part of her also looking out for any red flags, but Chase was different. She didn’t see red flags but she couldn’t really get a read on him either, she wasn’t sure whether he’d laugh or frown or even what he might say to her next and she wasn’t sure what to make of that.
“Oh, I mean, y’don’t have t’do tha’. S’alright…” she said, trailing off when he snapped his fingers and called to Billy with what she could only assume was an insult given the way he was glowering at Chase over the counter, and she gave him a shrug when he glanced in her direction, not quite sure what to do with herself.
“Uh, if y’had any music tha’ y’wanted t’start with I can get some sheet music if y’want?” she said after a moment, turning her attention back to him and giving him a small smile.
Despite his wish to stay as condescending and awkward as possible, the corner of Chase’s mouth quirked upwards at Ailene’s comment about the flyers. In truth, he hadn’t expected her to curse. Maybe it was the cheery attitude and bright blue eyes, blown wide open like they had been drawn by some kids’ cartoonist, but he’d thought she might be the kind of person who’d gasp and touch a hand to her chest if she ever heard any sort of foul language.
“Yeah, it would be a bit shite,” he mimicked, trying his best to nail an imitation of her accent and failing miserably, probably insulting the whole population of Ireland in the process. His poor and potentially offensive effort wasn’t something he was ready to apologise for though.
“I’ll bite though,” he nodded. He was sure that any other possible candidate for a piano teacher would have been scared off long before they’d had the chance to sit at a table and talk things through. Ailene had looked nervous initially, but now a happy smile had plastered itself across her face. Or maybe she was just a good actress. In any case, she didn’t smell of musky perfume and a cigarette filled bingo hall, so Chase decided she would do for now.
Her reassurance that she didn’t need to call on one of A Novel Idea’s employee was lost amidst his obnoxiously clicking fingers. He continued to snap insistently at Simon who peered at him gormlessly for a moment, probably wondering why Chase was calling on him instead of wheeling his chair behind the counter and making the coffee himself, like Billy had explicitly told him not to do before. He ignored the dirty looks that his cousin continued to send him. After all, he was only following Billy’s rules, just maybe in less of a polite way than the bookstore owner had hoped for.
When Simon hurried over, pen and pad in hand to take their orders, Chase simply screeched an ‘AMERICANO WITH SIX SUGARS’ at him, delighting in the way the man’s face morphed into one of complete distress. Simon’s eyes darted between Chase and Billy before he sighed in resignation and tucked his pad back into his apron and presumably figured it would be best for Billy to decide how many sugars were appropriate for the smug boy sitting there.
Before, Simon could pull away though, Chase snapped his fingers once more.
“Aaaand the lady,” he said, pointedly before tipping his snapback in Ailene’s direction.
“What are you having? My treat,” he grinned. He knew Billy would be completely frazzled to hear about Chase’s uncharacteristic display of chivalry and that alone was worth forking out the three dollars for a coffee that would probably end up filled with salt instead of sugar if Simon Hudson was the one making it.
After finally allowing Simon to scurry away, he raised an eyebrow at Ailene then considered her question. He wasn’t actually sure what sort of music Lena Proctor would like, but he figured it was a niche sort of taste given how picky she was about everything else in life. He blew out through his lips and figured he’d need to get Chet and Trent to look into that for him before his next lesson with Ailene. For the moment, he was happy to meddle with her some more.
“Do you have sheet music for Hotline Bling?” he asked her, the smile on his face intact even when Simon came hurrying back over with their coffees and quickly set them down. Chase wasn’t sure he wanted to even attempt and try his.
Instead, he used one hand to drum out a rhythm on the wooden table top, while the other reached out for a teaspoon. He clenched it in his fist and raised it to his lips like he would a microphone and began belting into it.
“You used to call me on my cell phone, late night when you neeeed my love,” he sang loudly, attracting the attention of the rest of the shop’s patrons. Chase may have been gifted with an ear for a good beat and tune to go with it, but his own singing voice left a lot to be desired. He continued to garble on with the song regardless.
“And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean – take it away, Piano Girl!” he instructed, pointing the teaspoon in her direction and wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
.ailenefr:
Ailene wasn’t ever sure who she would be meeting when she got calls or texts about lessons, it was usually difficult to tell anything about them from a brief conversation like that, and she had people of all ages contacting her as it was so she didn’t like to assume anything. However, she didn’t expect to see someone her own age (he looked to be, anyway) and she reached out to shake his hand when he offered it, nodding at Billy when he gave her a thumbs up from behind the counter though he had a peculiar expression on his face that she couldn’t quite read.
She opened her mouth to greet him but he started talking first, stating that he’d expected her to be old but that she’d ‘do’, and she wasn’t sure how to respond. “Oh! Well, I guess tha’ is the stereotype, isn’t it?” she said lamely, giving him a small smile. She knew that most people didn’t expect to see a little tattooed girl in her early twenties when they came in for lessons, her own piano teacher as a child had been an elderly woman who lived in her neighbourhood back home and she supposed that not many people her age decided to follow it as a career path anyways. “Er, I sometimes get a croaky voice when I’m poorly, if tha’ makes a difference?” she said, wincing as she heard the words come out of her mouth. Fuck.
“Anyways, uh, here,” she said, moving one chair away from one of the cafe tables so he could roll his wheelchair up to it, then seating herself opposite him. “Chase! Righ’, it’s nice t’meet’cha.” she said, folding her hands down on the table. “I’m Ailene, I mean y’already knew tha’ ‘cause it’s on th’advertisement, but y’know I jus’ figured I’d introduce myself— what made y’decide t’call?” she asked, hoping he wasn’t judging her already. She tended to go off talking without realizing and while her friends and family were used to it, this stranger definitely was not and it could turn out to be off-putting.
It was always interesting to know why people wanted to learn, sometimes they just wanted to take up a hobby and others, like most of the children she got for lessons, decided that they wanted to be a concert pianist someday which always made her smile. A few people would drop off after a few lessons, sending a vague text message about how they didn’t have time or it wasn’t for them, but she appreciated it when people stuck around and took the time to learn, and she hoped this would be the same. It made her sad to see people go, or tell her they didn’t think they’d be good at it like Ronnie had, though he was picking it up much faster than he’d given himself credit for.
She noticed Chase glancing at Billy every so often from their table and she wondered how they knew each other. “Have y’ever played before? Definitely not a requirement, I jus’ like t’know!”
Chase couldn’t help but roll his eyes when Ailene made a show of moving one of the chairs at a nearby table so he could park his set of wheels. To anyone else, it was an act of kindness. To Chase, it was a reminder that he had to get other people to make allowances for him. He’d never had to do that before, unless those allowances were intentional and involved people apologising and tripping over their words when Chase deliberately got them flustered. Those occasions had brought smug smirks to his face, not the glower he currently wore when he propped his elbows up onto the table and faced Ailene.
“Croaky voice, huh?” he asked, disinterestedly. He was now beginning to weigh the pros and cons of this bet. He was a little happier now that he knew he wasn’t going to have to spend an hour or so each week in the company of an old cardigan wearing woman who smelled of stale talcum powder, but this girl in front of him was almost too chirpy.
Belatedly realising that she had been talking to him, he blinked and sat upright. The smile she wore had wavered slightly and he twitched his nose. If Kai were here, Chase was sure that the other man would have something to say about him making Ailene uncomfortable. Billy would say the same as well, and Chase was almost sure that he was going to if the looks he was drawing the pair were anything to go by. Childishly, Chase stuck his tongue out at his cousin then passed up the five-year-old act by preceding it with a swift middle finger.
“What was your question?” he asked when he had finally turned back to Ailene. “Oh, why I wanna learn to be a piano man.”
He tapped insistently at the arm of his wheelchair for a few second before shrugging his shoulders. There was no real need to tell her about the bet set forth to him by Chet and Trent, especially when Billy, and Billy’s good manners and gung-ho love for morals, was anxiously hovering around.
“Impresses the girls, dunnit?” he said eventually, before tipping his head to the side in consideration. “And the guys.”
He couldn’t help but laugh when she politely asked him if he had played any piano before. He had definitely mashed out a very uneven Chopsticks whenever he had crashed Brody’s place to see Kai, but the other man had all but hauled Chase off the piano stool. Since then, the closest he’d gotten to a keyboard was the one on his computer that he used to create electronica compositions with Kai.
“Nah,” he shook his head, scrunching up his face at the same time. “Have you ever played before? Because if I’m gonna be paying you however many dollars an hour to teach me then some background knowledge is definitely a requirement, chickie.”
He reclined back in his chair and shot her a winning smile, the one he spread across his face to cancel out whatever backhanded remark he had made previously. It worked on most people, although there were some exceptions. He didn’t necessarily think that Ailene would be an exception though, not with her bright smile and positive Disney princess attitude.
“You want some coffee?” he asked her. “’Cause I’m pretty good at getting free coffee here.”
Immediately, he snapped his fingers to summon Simon with a sharp ‘’Garcon!’ and pointedly ignored the glare Billy was giving him.

Chase: happy bday rhodes srry i told everyone u fucked my cousin have a gr8 day not doing that
.ailenefr:
Ailene was grateful for everyone at A Novel Idea for letting her advertise her lessons on their bulletin board as it had boosted business ever since she’d tacked up a handmade poster a few weeks prior. Since then she’d had an influx of lessons with people of all ages, and she didn’t feel like she was scraping by so much anymore. And everyone seemed to enjoy their time with her and their newfound musical skills, and that meant more to her than a paycheck anyhow.
It wasn’t odd for her to receive a text message from a random number inquiring about the poster, and today was no such difference. She had been in the kitchen with Joe, tittering about and cooking breakfast while he sat at the table making the occasional joke, usually about her being too short to reach the cabinets, when her phone had pinged. She’d hurriedly waved her hands at Joe so he’d move those absurdly long legs of his out of the way, having been sat with the strewn about across the floor, eventually opting to hop over them so she could pick up her phone, rolling her eyes fondly when he started to laugh.
"Y'know, someday there’s gonna be a doorframe tha’s actually jus’ too small for you t'get through, an’ then I’ll be th'one laughin’.“ she said teasingly, reaching out a hand to muss up his hair as she walked into the other room to read her message.
Whoever it was from had asked that they meet at the bookshop and her fingers hovered hesitantly over the keyboard. That wasn’t so unusual, was it? The winky face at the end of the message was, though. She knew she had to ignore the automatic panic because this wasn’t Clint, it was just someone wanting a lesson, and it was in a familiar place anyway. Loads of people used emojis. Billy and Simon and Katie would all be in that day at the very least, and they wouldn’t let anything go amiss. And nothing would, that was absurd. She nearly turned to ask Joe to go with her but he’d already vacated the kitchen, and she didn’t want to seem silly.
The shop was an easy walking distance from their flat and she grabbed her bag and made her way downstairs, a warm breeze hitting her when she reached the sidewalk. Billy was at the counter when she walked inside, the familiar jingle of the bell putting her at ease when she opened the door, and she waved at him happily, hoping it didn’t look tacky that Kara had filled in another one of her tattoos with magic marker that hadn’t quite come off yet.
“Hiya, Billy. M'supposed t'meet somebody here about a lesson, y'think they migh’ be here already?”
Asking Kai, who knew Chase inside out, was out of the question. His best friend would refuse to help Chase learn the piano just so he could win a bet put forth to him by the other guys in their classes. Going to Kai’s ex, Brody, for help wouldn’t work either seeing as, unlike Chase and his exes, Brody and Kai were still on weirdly good terms. It didn’t make sense to Chase how you could suck someone’s dick one day and then break up and be nothing more than friends with them the next, but then again he hadn’t really attempted to really analyse the inner workings of the friendship between the two ‘Piano Muppets’, as he had dubbed them. Not that their piano playing skills were much help to him at that particular moment.
Chet and Trent had been smug when they told him his plan would fail, that there was no way he would be able to wheel his way into Lena Proctor’s affections by showcasing his amazing piano skills – of which he currently had none. Chase had laughed in the face of their scepticism and told them that, as soon as he learned how to play something other than Chopsticks, Lena – who was known for being as picky and choosy as they come – would be eating out of the palm of his hand. That’s why he hadn’t been able to tall Kai; Chet and Trent had sniggered at the idea, whereas Kai would probably make an effort to tell him about how immoral the whole thing was.
After searching high and low – although the height of his chair ensured that it was mostly low – Chase had eventually came across a flyer tacked up in Billy’s shop. His cousin had raised an eyebrow when Chase claimed that he was attempting new musical endeavours past mashing up electronic beats on his laptop whenever he was high, but hadn’t questioned him further.
He had fired off a text to Ailene Stark, the chick that had put up the flyer advertising her teaching skills. He had wrestled his phone away from Chet after asking his friend to revise the message only to realise he had sent Ailene a winking emoji like the fucking mouth breather he was. Now he’d have to wheel himself to Billy’s shop and attempt to explain to some wrinkled old bat (with a music sheet for the whole Sound of Music score tucked under her arm) why it looked like he was trying to basically sext her.
After lounging around Billy’s book store and picking up copies of Bob Dylan’s autobiography so he could place it in the ‘religious section’ of the store (all the while avoiding his cousin’s glare since Billy hadn’t quite forgiven him for the whole Rhodes joke), the bell jingled and in walked a girl who was definitely not a wrinkled old bat. She was the sort of person that was smiling so brightly, it made Chase think that she belonged in Disney World rather than windy fucking Wellington, and as far as he could see, she had yet to showcase an affinity for singing nuns and oversized Austrian families.
When Billy gestured him over, he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. So she was his piano teacher.
Pushing the wheels of his chair forward, he sidled up next to the woman and let out an amused snort.
“Well, you don’t look like a crypt keeper. I was expecting you to be all gnarled hands and croaky voices but, hey, you’ll do,” he commented, pointedly ignoring the look of despair Billy was probably directing his way. Shrugging, he offered a hand for her to shake. For the sake of manners and shit.
“I’m Chase, I’m the one that text ya,” he informed her.
