TRETORN
What?! Another former Pro-Shop New-Old-Stock pair of pre-1985 vintage Tretorn Nylites? Men's size 8.5 V-Vamp Canvas model #503041?? Like, oh. my. god.
"Hey, you going to tennis camp this summer?"
"Yah... you get new Tretorns?"
"Totally!"
Tennis camp in the mid 1980s out on the Hamptons... yeah we wouldn't be caught dead without our Tretorns.
We found three more absolutely iconic, classic pairs. New in box, Pro Shop old stock.
Men's 10 1/2 Canvas Nylite, Men's 10 1/2 XTL Leather, and Women's 7 Nylite in classic blue.
This amazing satin banner is from the early 1980s. It was meant to be prominently displayed in your Tennis Pro Shop or fine shoe store to indicate that you did indeed carry the Ultimate Tennis Shoe. This particular banner is in perfect condition as it was never used, and came from the estate of the person who owned the company that made such banners.
It is now proudly displayed in our studio.
"Hi, it's [redacted]'s Pro Shop calling, your Tretorns are in."
An absolutely incredible find. These two never-opened pairs of men's Nylites are still plastic wrapped from Etonic, Tretorn USA's distributor/wholesaler at the time. The shipping label says they were sent November 26, 1985, making them forty years old.
We are not yet sure of the exact color of trim and logo proportions as they did vary slightly from the late 1970s until the early-mid 1980s. The model number is consistent with the well-known navy blue trim that men's sized Nylites were so most widely available with.
The heavy plastic wrap is intact but was never completely airtight, so it remains to be seen what exact condition they are in. We will, eventually, carefully extract one of the pairs for photos and inspection. We are very interested to find out the condition of the dreaded foam that lines the uppers and insole, as it has almost universally disintegrated into sticky brown dust over the years (as you may know.) Its condition will likely give us a good indication of whether that decay is indeed oxidation, which could give us some insight into how to best preserve the rest of our collection going forward.
Anyway, the studio is being rebuilt, and interesting times are ahead.

ps. We're putting the team (and studio) back together! Stay tuned for new 1980s Tretorn greatness....
"Hey, so what are you doing? Yeah? Well, we gotta go to the mall."
Tretorn Nylite Grey Trim, Men's size 10. c. 1986-1987.
Welcome to the gallery old friend. We've been waiting.
WOS Pink Nylite Hi Top, Size 7. 1986. $28.95 USD.
A bit of an oddity, these were apparently available in five colorways. None of us at the gallery recall ever seeing these in the wild.
Hello! Are you still active on Tumblr?
Love the classic Tretorn Nylite, hope to see you post more. 😊❤️
Hi, yes, still here. The studio is currently disassembled but may dig back into the archives...
