This deceptively simple image revolutionised molecular biology. It also represents one of the most notorious controversies in science. ‘Photo 51’ was taken by Rosalind Franklin, who was born on this day in 1920. It is an x-ray crystallography image of DNA, created by bombarding a tiny DNA sample with x-rays for more than 60 hours. To most of us, this striped cross might not mean much, but to a few scientists in 1953 it held the secret to the structure of DNA. The controversy surrounds the instant Maurice Wilkins, who worked in Franklin’s lab, showed the photo to Francis Crick, a molecular biologist at Cambridge University, without Franklin’s knowledge. Crick published a paper with his colleague James Watson describing DNA’s double-helix structure. Wilkins, Crick and Watson shared the Nobel Prize in 1962. Franklin, whose peers never accepted her, died of cancer four years earlier, and couldn’t receive the prize posthumously.

"Don’t fucking tell me to calm down." She spit, one hand flying up to wrench at her. (This was a bad habit of hers, something she did when she was nervous, angry, excited, any especially vivid emotion really.) "You never told me! I found out from Bobby- fucking Bobby! Did you not think I could handle the truth? You had absolutely no fucking right to keep this from me! I deserved to know!" The young hero spun on her heels, looking at a framed diploma and back at her adoptive father, face turning red from her rant.
"Calm down, and at the very least try to stop pulling your hair out." he repeated, more sternly this time. She was going to hurt herself in pure anger at this rate. "What did Bobby tell you?" Charles wouldn't read her mind; it would only further her wild emotions, which could be incredibly dangerous for her and everyone else in the vicinity. However, his concern and desire to help was genuine, and he wore it plainly on his face as he looked up at her.
Me, in dog form.
Jubilee exploded into the office, door slamming into the wall. She didn't care whether or not there were other occupants in the room, the only thing on her mind was her absolute anger. "Why the fuck didn't you ever tell me?" She practically screeched, her hands balled up and swinging as if she had no idea what to do with them.
Charles jumped when the door slammed and rage akin to a blaze swept through his office. He was taken aback by her anger, to say the least. It wasn't unusual for Jubilee to be upset with him, considering her sometimes explosive temper, but this was unprompted and on an entirely different plane of fury. "Tell you what?" he asked, concern softening his voice. He wheeled himself away from his desk, closer to the enraged girl, and looked up at her with worried eyes. "Calm down, Jubilee, and tell me what the problem is."
Ten years. Ten years since Charles had last seen Erik's face in something other than a nightmare, and it only took ten minutes of seeing this man that ruined his life and stole everything from him to make him s l i p. Erik was right across from him, but the table and chessboard that sat between them seemed to create a vast expanse of silent anger. He had never wanted to be near the man he used to call his friend again, but as soon as it had become a reality on that plane, his resolution cracked.
He detested Erik after all that had happened, but that didn't stop Charles from wanting him. From wanting something more, something they had years ago that they may never have again. Something addictive, and he had been sober for far too long. There was no tenderness in his gaze when he took Erik's knight and spoke to the man he wanted to hate more than anything:
"You've taken everything from me, driven me to nothing, and now you have the audacity to make me need something I can't have with a clear conscience. I'm going to say this once, and if you turn me down, I will never mention or agree to it again. I want you. I need you, Erik, and I plan on having you here and now. Do you accept?"
Life, however, was yet in my possession, with all its requirements, and pains, and responsibilities. The burden must be carried; the want provided for; the suffering endured; the responsibility fulfilled. I set out.

[text] Surprisingly, not at all. It takes a fat wallet to buy drinks for the entire bar.
[text] I'm a generous soul, I suppose. Now that the cat seems to be out of the bag, am I correct in assuming I'll need to tip more in the future?

Erik just stared. It was a childish action rooted in the thought that if he just stared long enough, the situation would change. Charles would go back to being Charles, and Erik could stop feeling so mentally crowded. He stared. Nothing changed. He took a deep breath. This made no sense, but there had been a couple equally bizarre happenings in his life. If he had learned anything, it was to make the most of a situation while searching endlessly for a solution. Erik stretched his arms over his head, frowning when they didn’t extend quite as far as he was accustomed to. “Do you always feel so short?” His voice — no, no, Charles’ voice — sounded odd to him. It was too light, the consonants too rounded. Granted, it was difficult to make out with the murmur in the back of his mind. It was a hum, nothing intelligible and so low that, had Erik not been accustomed to total silence, he would have never discerned it. As things stood, it was still frustrating. How did Charles cope with it all? “I do hope you have painkillers nearby.”
"Yes. Short, hungover, and like I could stand to lose a few pounds, apparently. Have fun with that, darling." The reply was absent, as Charles was still struck by something: the silence. He closed his eyes and soaked in the moment, this one surreal opportunity for his mind to be completely still.
Pure, sweet silence. He had never known it. It was...incredible. And just like that, he was torn between feeling horribly alone and wonderfully relieved...
He snapped back to reality at the sound of his own voice in foreign ears once again. "Top drawer, far side. I apologize for the constant headache, and I hope you like a bit of background noise. I can't decide if I miss it or if I'm overjoyed." There was a pause as the sound of Erik's voice leaving his mouth slowly began to become normal. The shock was wearing off, and the situation was gradually being accepted as reality. He sat up and smiled, because really, he could get used to the feeling of Erik's body. "Leaning toward overjoyed, to be quite honest. Have you always been this strong? I'm liking this."
