It has made me better, loving you.

Jimmy and Angela Darmodyâs wedding photo (x)
Hey uhh... one of the fellas said he say you on the Boardwalk earlier... said you was with some girl - looked real friendly he said...
Angela looked up from the pile of laundry she was folding, smiling at him innocuously, her left brow arched.
"So youâve taken to spying on me?"
Not up for an argument at the moment, she was careful to keep her tone light as well. That he cared more about her as person or possession she wasnât sure but he did look a bit troubled. Then again, when did he not?
Sheâd tried to explain it beforeâwhat she felt for Mary. But she didnât fully understand it herself nor did he really want to hear what she was saying. She hadnât seen Aramat since theyâd met over the summer, was delighted to hear she was in town for a few days. Yes, she enjoyed the company immensely, but in a platonic sense.
"That is the general idea, you know. Friends acting âfriendlyâ toward one another."
She wanted to think his questions were out of polite curiosity, yet part of her remained uneasy subconsciously shifting from one foot to the other. What if he were trying to trick her? Would hearing her say he was rightâsheâd been caughtâhowever untrue it was it might just be the out he was looking for. Or was this really more about his pride needing soothing? That she couldnât get a read on him made her ever more nervous.
"It isnât like that, you know," she said of their intimacy before pausing to draw a long breath. True, thereâd been a dry spell for months but when they were together she enjoyed herselfâshe really did. But how would she even begin to explain that her attraction to him differed from her attraction to Mary. That one was no more satisfying or better than the other. She didnât fully understand it herselfâ thatâs just how it was. Different.
"NevermindâŠ" she muttered softly, searching for a sockâs other half their hands brushing but she was quick to move hers. "You might consider the company youâve been keeping as well. These associates of yours, that they would say such things about a manâs wifeâŠthat you allowed them toâŠ"
Thatâs what really hurt her the most. He wasnât on her side, kept his mouth shut until he returned home taking the punishment out on her when he got there. There was no stopping the tears this time so she simply turned her face away from him.
"I wasn't sayin'..." He sighed a little and took a clumsy step forward. "I really was askin' what she did, I was... makin' conversation." He had to admit he didn't understand her sometimes. The women he'd grow up with, his mother and all those bold showgirls, they were a different species from Angela. Always something to say, always loud and laughing or shouting, when they were happy they threw themselves at you, and when they were angry they screamed the house down. It was the quiet restraint that he could never know how to deal with.Â
He had to laugh dryly to himself at her comment about his associates. "I ain't got no choice in the company I'm keepin'. I keep the company Nucky wants me to keep, I do just what he tells me to and work with whoever he wants me to, and that way you and Tommy get food and a roof over your heads."

This is how it was with him. His version of an olive branch. It didnât lessen the pain, but it did serve to humanize him.
"I wasnât being deceptive, Jimmy. I didnât tell you because you werenât here to tell."
She spoke softly, regretting her earlier comments and refusing to stoop to that level again. At the same time, she wasnât being accusatory. It would have been much easier to leave Tommy with him while she was at lunch than bothering poor June.
"Her name is Aramat. It was nice to hear from her again. A pleasant surprise, really."
A loss for words she glanced down at the pile of shirts.
"I just... I get rubbed the wrong way I guess, when the fellas make jokes about me... that I ain't good enough for my own wife." He laughed nervously, rubbing the back of neck and picking up a shirt to fold, his eyes focused on the task.Â
"So, what's she do then? She live around here?"
There's a reason that all my shoes are on the bed right?
"Iâm reorganising!"
"Also, baby, you need new shoes.Like, really badly.â
"There's nothin' wrong with my shoes! They all have different uses."

Sheâd done it againâlet him get the best of her. Her heart heavy, she sighed in exasperation.
"Met her over the summerâŠat one of the dress shops," she paused, so frazzled she honestly had to stop to try and remember the name of the place. "It doesnât matter. I donât suppose Iâll be seeing her again will I?"
"Ahhh, Â what's her name?" He blinked at her, his face free of anger now but still held in a state of unreadable stillness. "I won't tell you what to do Angela, if I learnt anything from my mother it's that it ain't no good trying to control a woman, if she wants to run circles around you then she'll have made eight trips around before you even notice."

She sucks the air in through her teeth, her leg flinching away. Since she finally has to look away, sheâll look up, giving a small laugh. âJimmy! Oh my god, youââ she avoid calling him a rude word, her hand moving to his cheek for a moment instead. âYouâll have to carry me home now.â
"Sorry Cecelia. Here was me panicking I'd attacked a stranger but it's just you huh?" he bit his lip for a second when he recognized her, deciding it was now okay to pick her up and put her on a chair now he wasn't at risk of being clocked for his trouble. "Well you do weigh about as much as Tommy, but I think I'll get you a coffee first before I heroically carry you back to your place."
