i finished the idiot and i just have to say. the back cover of my edition claims the final scene is "one of the most powerful in all of world literature" to which i was like wow... you guys are setting the bar really high.... how could this possibly end to warrant such praise... then i read the ending and my eyeballs popped out of their sockets in amazement. even more mind-bogglingly because i spoiled the ending for myself and it still made my jaw drop. i think its one of my all time favorite endings now...

i can't stop thinking abt how ogata is so pavel smerdyakov coded. an older brother/sibling that was never recognized by his father and therefore spent his whole life striving to prove to anyone, but also first and foremost to themselves, that they were also worthy of love — only to end up having their whole carefully crafted framework of the world being shattered in pieces by the one person that they actually still (kind of) cared about, in turn leading them to such a devastating existential crisis that they saw no other option but to take their own life...

i think it's not a coincidence that both of them are my most favorite characters in their respective stories lol.

it killed me when rodya was on trial and razumikhin pulls up with the landlady and all the receipts like hey. did you hear how raskolnikov used up his meager savings to support a consumptive fellow student for a whole half year and then after the student passed also took care of his ailing father until his death and buried him too. btw he jumped into a burning building to save two children, sustaining injuries that put him out of commission for a while. haha twirls hair dont u wanna reduce his sentence
