Kristin: “I just got tickets to see the play, so I thought I better read the book. The play is really immersive and apparently people throw up in the theater and feel the whole gamut of emotion. It’s good to catch up on classics, especially when they’re relevant now. Who is Big Brother? I don’t know. Is it Google Home or Alexa? Is it Russia? Trump himself or whoever owns Trump? We need to pay attention and not just play with apps on our phone. Our Google Home started talking without being prompted the other day and it totally freaked me out. People are handing their DNA over to ancestry.com without thinking about the fact that now someone owns their DNA. Thinking about this really stresses me out. Do I really have control over anything in my life? Time will tell.” @kvita #1894 #GeorgeOrwell / @theubc for #subwaybookreview #newyork 🗽 (at L Train)

Trying to make it to 50 books before the end of the year!
Happy autumn for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere 🍁🍂
When I make a pretty good hook (…) she gives me a toothless smile and an unintelligible comment I think might be praise.
There are so many great books being adapted for the screen in 2016! Which “Page-to-Screen” novel do you want to read with us in April?
I recently borrowed a couple books from a friend and one of them happens to be Ms. Peregrine's, so it looks like that's the one it's gonna be, haha!
What a strange illusion it is to suppose that beauty is goodness.
Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina (via bookphile)
‘It is important,’ the man in the grey suit interrupts. ‘Someone needs to tell those tales. When the battles are fought and won and lost, when the pirates find their treasures and the dragons eat their foes for breakfast with a nice cup of Lapsang souchong, someone needs to tell their bits of overlapping narrative. There’s magic in that. It’s in the listener, and for each and every ear it will be different, and it will affect them in ways they can never predict. From the mundane to the profound. You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift. Your sister may be able to see the future, but you yourself can shape it, boy. Do not forget that.’ He takes another sip of his wine. ‘There are many kinds of magic, after all.’
