It was the first day of school, which was always a mixed bag, Toby had found in the four years of teaching. The five year olds were either ready to leave home and didn’t want to go back or they were the opposite. It was a sliding scale but most kids leaned one way or another.
In Mia’s case, she didn’t want to be here so she, and the other’s that didn’t like being here, got to spend more time with him to make it easier on them. Plus, with his height, being over most everyone’s head, the kids were begging to be picked up to see the world from a new vantage point.
However, how Mia differed in the fact that her mom wasn’t here and was approaching an hour late. Tobias reserved judgement but he was getting antsy. He wanted to relax at home and he guessed the Mia felt the same way.
A door opened and closed somewhere in the hallway and Mia shot a hopeful glance.
Toby smiled slightly, “Hey, that could be your mom right now!”
