Allow me to reintroduce myself…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Welcome to a new name and a fresh new look! Farewell ToBNatural… hello ToiaBarry.com!
I was trying to think of where to start when explaining why I decided to change the name of my platform. I guess there’s no better place to begin than… at the beginning! Lemme first share how ToBNatural came to be.
For as long as I’ve known myself, I’ve been obsessed with hair. I got a doll that had a head full of curly hair as a gift and I always head her hair laid! I used to create hair styles and even recreate the ones I saw on my mom and my aunts. If remember what the popular hair styles were like in the late 80s/90s, you know that was a big deal!
Since I was a kid, my goal was to help make women look and feel good by becoming a hair stylist when I grew up. But when looking to attend a high school for cosmetology, my junior high guidance counselor told me I was “too smart for that”. So, because of the pressure and what was expected of a “smart girl”, I took the test for, got accepted to and attended Brooklyn Tech, one of the specialized high schools in NYC. I learned much there and actually have Tech in common with my husband (though we didn’t know each other the one year we were there at the same time) but it wasn’t what I wanted.
I received my diploma in Media Communications (crazy, huh?!), but figured post high school would be my chance to do what I really wanted. While everyone was applying to colleges, I was looking for a cosmetology school. But, again… pressure. Ya girl attended Fashion Institute of Technology and majored in Interior Design. Sure, I was good at this too but it wasn’t what I loved.
Finally Following My Passion
After a few years of college and working retail, I finally made moves to attend the Learning Institute for Beauty Sciences (now Empire Beauty School) and acquired my License of Cosmetology in 2004. Yay me! Problem was, I suffered from chronic back pain (still do), so working as a stylist standing on my feet all day wouldn’t work. How would I use my knowledge and passion for hair care now?!
Welp, around 2009, I decided to grow out my relaxed hair (at the prodding of my husband) and return to my natural texture. Whoooo woulda thought this would be the catalyst for a whole career path?
I and two friends took on this journey together, swapping hair tips and ideas almost daily via email. Though I was already viewing random videos on YouTube here and there, it wasn’t until this time that I discovered that young women were actually filming themselves styling their hair in their bathrooms and bedrooms while sharing tips. Knowing I had something to offer, I joined in the fun.
I started my ToBNatural Facebook page in March 2012 as a resource for natural hair & fashion inspiration. While I began my blog at the same time, I was far too nervous to actually commit to a blog. Facebook just seemed easier — the posting, the interactions with followers, all of it just seemed like less pressure than actually writing articles on a website for people to read than posting a gorgeous hair style on social media. I launched a blog of the same name in August of that year. For the past 7 years, I’ve been known around these innanets as ToBNatural (to the point where people thought my name was Tobi!).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But since I became pregnant with Micah and started sharing more baby and family content along with just day-to-day goings on, it’s been clear for a minute that I’m about much more than natural hair. For a few years, I’ve been feeling that I needed for my platform to reflect the changes in my life. In the words of Sam Cooke, 🎶 it’s been a long time comin!

So this is my formal announcement & introduction of ToiaBarry.com
