We started our production in the workshop so what we intend to achieve this week is to at least build the table for our artefacts. Since we already got our legs ready from Ikea, the first thing that we need to do is to build up the layers for our table.
After measuring the wood plank provided, we decided to have 2 layers of it. At the start, the wood plank is really huge and we don’t know where to start cutting from. Though, we already got our measurements for the size of table when we sketch the line of the wood we find it quite small for a dressing table so last minute we decided to cut a bigger one instead.
The first time cutting the wood! We chose hand saw.... and it was so tiring and time-consuming. Moreover, we need to cut at least 2 of these so luckily Sam suggested using electric saw which was way easier. The first time when we tried using the electric saw we didn’t cut along the sketch line because we thought we could use hand saw to finish the sides so that it will be straighter and neater. It was double job, x2 tiring.
The second time we tried again, we placed the electric saw precisely on the line and focus on cutting on the line. We tried to position it as straight as possible, the end product is so much better than the first one we did. We used fine and rough sand paper to refine the edges.
So ta-dah! We got our two layers of wood done, then we used wood glue to stick the both wood together. We borrowed 3 f-clamps so that we clamps both woods for at least 24 hours.
Second workshop session! After returning all the clamps, we are sure that our table is now ok. We went on to drill holes on the table so that we can join the legs to it. However, we realised that the screws that comes with the legs are not suitable for our table, it is too long and the sharp tip will protrude out which we find it dangerous and lucky for us, we found a suitable nails and nuts for our table in the workshop.
But it took us a really long time to find the perfect one! We kept experiment with different screws and drill it one by one to see which fits nicely, and we found it!
So we started drilling holes for the 4 sides of our tables and join our legs to it.
And we insert our legs onto the table
But we find the holes on top of the table not very appealing so we cut another exact wood and glued it on top.
This time round, it is harder to stick the wood on top of it as the bottom layer of wood is not flat due to the 4 sides of nails. So we used 20 clamps to clamp it for 24 hours to see if it’s strong enough. The most difficult part is actually bringing this whole table back to our studio :( Our arms almost broke.
We’ve also started building prototype for the monitor holder. The first one that we did is really a fail. Cut before gluing them woods together but we did the other way round which cause us to drill many holes to cut the hole ended up, it is so ugly and measurement is also off.
We took Sam’s advice to redo, so we decided to cut before gluing two woods together. But in the end, we only did one prototype and bring it home to try on the monitor.
It is slightly loose for the monitor :( And we got our measurements to be around 1.8cm, and we can start to make the real one next week.
We also got our primer and spray paint ready so that we can start spraying our table once the glue is dried.
