Headcanon: Rotom is the smartest species of electric-type and has quickly become the most commonly kept in households with the realization of their potential as working pokemon. The addition of Rotom to various electronics has kick-started an age of safe, smart devices that has caused a complete flip in the world’s opinion on not only Rotom but also the electric- and ghost-types in general.
Studies have shown that early and regular contact with safe, trusted pokemon of any type is key to avoiding phobias and bad blood in the future, and Rotom have become the go-to for their typings. While most homes still do not have Rotom, most families and friend groups have somebody who owns one in this day and age, with the number steadily growing.
The keeping of Rotom as a working pokemon can come with a good amount of overhead costs, as all electronics the pokemon will be needed to run must be specifically made to function with them- non-specialized appliances will burn out quickly when possessed by Rotom. Buyers can normally purchase a whole set if they wish- these commonly come with a wide range of household appliances, several electronics specifically for the Rotom’s use outside of work, and a specially bred and trained Rotom- though suitable electronics are also available for individual sale.
Most commonly outside of appliances Rotom are used to run and power pokedexes, phones, and public kiosks and devices. The pokemon take very well to these, as they provide higher amounts of enrichment than one might find just being an oven for instance. To take advantage of this, several companies offer Rotomphones and Rotomdexes, some with Rotom provided and some without.
Because these specialized electronics and appliances can be so expensive, many people prefer to buy them without the added expense of a pre-trained Rotom, but this publication reminds readers that you should never bring a young or untrained electric type into homes with small children, the very elderly, or individuals with pacemakers. Working pokemon or no Rotom still require care, same as any other pokemon you may bring into your life. As ghost types they require little physical sustenance, being mostly content to feed off the ambient emotions and energies of the home, but steady access to a quality electric-type kibble will keep them nice and healthy. Don’t be afraid to be a little heavy-handed with treats during breaks as well, as they’ll only serve to make Rotom hyper with the extra calories to burn.
The biggest concern new owners face is the mischievous nature of these pokemon, which is fueled by their intelligence. Rotom get bored easily, and will turn to mischief when that happens. To avoid this make sure to interact with your Rotom regularly and provide it with forms of entertainment to utilize in it’s downtime. Several companies now produce gaming consoles specifically designed to be used by Rotom, allowing them to play while they would otherwise be unoccupied. Other producers of gaming consoles have begun producing controllers specialized for Rotom. These along with other toys, including those made for the Porygon line, will all go a long way in ensuring peace in the home.
