Yes or No
Riley’s path in life has come to a fork in the road, but as she considers the choice, she doesn’t know the gravity of her decision.
After a few more months or so in Kalos, Riley left to head back to Unova. The only reason she had stayed that long was because of Tange. The two had become good friends, and Riley really enjoyed the kickboxing classes with her. But otherwise, Riley wasn’t happy. She had originally moved to Kalos just because her mom had, but now her mom was settled and happy and Riley wanted to live her own life and she didn’t feel like Kalos was the place to do that.
And after all, Castelia City was where Riley felt at home. She roamed the streets, meeting up with old cop friends and sort of going back to her old ways of solo undercover policing. She bought an apartment in a high rise building with a good view of the ocean and enough room for her three Pokémon. It was perfect, but her life just wasn’t.
At a bar one night, Riley ran into her ex-boyfriend, Will. After failing to keep in touch with him while she was in Kalos, Riley figured he would have moved on, but was pleasantly surprised to find him still interested in her. They started dating again, and it was like old times.
Except now they were both a few years older, and Will was in his thirties and wanting to settle down. He already had a perfect little house just north of Castelia, and was maybe even ready to think of kids. But where did Riley stand of all this?
It came down to one question. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes!”
Riley followed the path everyone her age was doing. She wasn’t content with her life so maybe this was the answer.
Their wedding was in the spring, outside near Floccesy Town so Will’s 94 year old grandmother could attend. Riley’s mother and now husband flew in from Unova, but that was all the family she invited. A few firefighter and police friends came, and more of Will’s family, but it was a fairly small wedding. Riley insisted on it not being too big a deal.
They honeymooned in Kalos (Riley venturing off to meet up with Tange at one point) and then returned to life in Unova. Will still worked as a firefighter, but tried to plan his work schedule around his home life. Riley on the other hand, worked on her own time. She dove head first back into the gangs and alleys of Castelia, putting herself in more and more dangerous situations. She started making careless mistakes; leaving her gun at home, not bothering to release her Pokémon when necessary, not letting the police know what she was up to.
And one day, it all caught up to her.
There was a gang fight about to happen in the west side of the city. Riley ran right past the police station on her way to it, not bothering to let them know. Her phone was ringing, so she glanced as it as she ran down the street. It was Will. “Not the time,” she growled, turning down an alley and racing towards the rougher part of the city. And suddenly she was in it. Twenty or so people, all with various weapons and even a few Pokémon in the mess. It was hard to tell who was on what side, but Riley didn’t really care and jumped right into the fray. She threw punches, kicks, even bit a guy, but then reached for a gun she didn’t have. And that moment cost her. A knife in her back, stabbing through to her lung, caused her to stumble forward, falling to the ground as her strength started to leave her. Riley’s anguish caused both Luxray and Arcanine to leap from their Poké Balls, standing over their trainer as she lay collapsed on the ground.
She was pronounced dead on the scene and the sad howls of her faithful friends filled the streets of Castelia.
“I’m sorry, but no.”
It just wasn’t her. Riley was her own person. She enjoyed spending time with Will, but she had her own life to live. And she was going to figure out what she wanted out of it.
One day, wandering around the streets not too far from her building, Riley stumbled upon a place for sale. It was an old dance studio, but that wasn’t why Riley was interested in it. The place reminded her of the kickboxing dojo in Kalos that she had gone to with Tange. It sparked a crazy idea in her head that she pushed aside, thinking it was too much, but a week later she couldn’t help but think it might actually work.
So she did it. Riley bought the studio and started doing some renovations on it to make it into more of a dojo. She slowly accumulated punching bags and other equipment, and soon it looked ready for some fighting. She put up a new sign and hung up a few posters for it around the city.
Business was slow at first, but teaching kickboxing came easy to Riley and she really enjoyed it. It was a lot safer than policing, and somehow also more rewarding. She had a few regulars that praised her classes and helped spread the word. Soon she even had to hire people to work with her because her dojo was such a success.
Riley couldn’t believe it. She wasn’t where she had ever expected to be, and yet, her life finally felt complete.
