Excuse me. Mr. Hunt? Would you like to watch a movie?
(AND HAVE I TOLD Y’ALL ONE OF MY FAV CELEBRITY STORIES EVER, THE PITT/CRUISE ONE-SIDED RIVALRY DURING THE FILMING OF THIS MOVIE?) # um you need to share this!
Omg it’s hilarious and one of my favorite things ever because Pitt was SUCH a brat and Cruise was just walking around oblivious.
There was a few factors, like the two men having egos and clashing when Pitt thought him being the lead meant he would trump Cruise, at the time THE biggest movie star in the world, and Cruise was basically “lol okay.” Pitt was also moody about filming in the dark and was annoyed because Cruise was always cheerful (he says he stays upbeat to keep set morale up), had his wife Nicole around all the time, and had the crew gaga over him (again, biggest star at the moment). So Pitt was mad that he- being in a VAMPIRE MOVIE- had to be in the dark, and it was obviously Cruise’s fault he was cheerful and well liked. Granted, that tension worked for the film, so…
Anyway, my fav part of it all- Pitt read like a chapter of the book and tossed it, saying it bored him, then was upset Cruise had the more “fun” part. Meanwhile, Cruise was Hermione fucking Granger, reading EVERY Lestat-centric book to get a feel for the character (and eventually wanting to do a Lestat trilogy, which sadly never happened), and wanting to talk about how great HIS character was. Soon, everything Cruise did and said would bother an already moody and depressed Pitt and it became a “look at that bitch over there eating crackers like she owns the place” type of situation. These were two opposite personalities- laid back Pitt and always-on, popular kid Cruise- that probably helped the whole ego-driven tension worsen. I think Pitt even said “he’s North Pole, I’m South Pole.”
Buuuuuuuut, Pitt eventually stopped being a brat, began dating Cruise’s pal Thandie Newton, and would hang with Cruise and his wife at events throughout the 90s.I believe both men even said that the media exaggerated their alleged “rivalry.”
