mary needed to get her ducks in a row, personally as well as politically. the children were safe but her kingdom was now at risk and she would be damned if she gave up her crown after all she had sacrificed. in recent weeks she had foregone some of her english style gowns, opting instead for more eastern european fashions. while her style had previously been a composite of two cultures there could be no mistaking where her loyalties lied. england was in her blood but she had spilled far more of it for poland. she had given them a future king and brought stability to the realm. sending for the duke of barcelona was simply one of many tasks she had to complete without becoming overwhelmed and when he was announced she rose to her aching feet and her expression shifted to a reserved but elegant smile, ever the friendly monarch.Â
âyour grace, i hope you are well. in light of recent events, i think it best that we proceed with your marriage to the princess adelaide swiftly.â mary spoke in clipped spanish, spine straight and emerald eyes tired as she cut to the point. surely, she had aged five years overnight. âthere are warmongers in our midst and poland cannot be left susceptible. i do not seek a mere nominal alliance with spain and i hope that has been made clear.â it pained mary that her people may yet be subjected to further death and destruction but her efforts to maintain a semblance of peace could only go so far when it seemed as if most were still thirsting for battle. conflict was likely an inevitability and she would have to adapt and prepare lest she found herself caught in the crosshairs. âhowever, if you do object to a union with my dear sister then i advise you to speak now.â
tomas had expected there to be panic from poland given the recent turn of events. though by the visage of the polish queen, it seemed as she had managed to keep her head held high - composed and dutiful. and for that, tomas could respect it. he gently bit his own tongue, a reminder that he was being summoned by another countryâs royal and not by his own brother. in a time like this, he was not seeking for trouble.Â
âswiftly?â he arched a brow. and then came the rationale. the curtness of her words were appreciated but tomas felt hollowed. his stance on marriage was still ... at a standstill. but he understood the circumstances and if adelaide had spoken to her privately of their personal affairs, surely theyâd be sworn to each other immediately. he sighed, she was still thoughtful - giving him a choice in the matter alone. but he wondered if her husband would agree to her approach. if she so desired, she could demand marriage upon him, could she not? âI do not mean to appear caustic or selfish but perhaps I am,â each word drawn out from his mouth slowly. âI am unsure of marriage your highness. it is no fault upon princess adelaide, it is merely my own desires that point to another trajectory in life.â his fingers were clenched in anticipation of what would follow next in her response.Â
