Reading “Fight Club” Post #1
As I’m beginning to approach the climax of the book, I’ve noticed many things that Palahniuk brings up that allows the readers to understand the personality of the narrator. From where I’m at in the novel, I feel Palahniuk really wants the readers to deeply understand who the narrator is and his intentions through out the book. In other words, it’s about understanding the psychology of the characters. Palahniuk especially does this by shifting between different events and memories in the narrator’s mind as a way of providing context on why the narrator is the way he is. From the scene of where he’s held at gunpoint to his memories of going to various support groups, Palahniuk reveals that the narrator is wanting to live a lifestyle of danger and fear which ultimately uncovers the reasons of creating The Fight Club. I think that understanding this is really important because it allows the audience to develop a better connection with the narrator. It especially allowed me to side with the narrator and support his decisions which is what I believe Palahniuk intended for the readers to do.
