It's December, and I've just finished a nice little (explicit) Christmas podfic for all y'all Jayvik folks! "bah humbug" by spqr features Modern AU!Jayvik, minor angst, and love confessions! The author does a truly incredible job writing Viktor's perspective, especially the way that his part influences his insecurity towards his love for Jayce and the affection he's willing to accept from Jayce. The Third Backup Plan

Has anyone else considered the secret third option when the explosion killed Dubois and Shapiro: that they send the secondary engineer, who is already briefed on the entire mission and can be taught about astrophage, instead of Andrea Cáceres?

The secondary engineer wouldn't exactly be as great as Grace, but definitely better than that totally not trained, distillery worker from Paraguay with a bachelor's in chemistry and a minor in cellular biology. Grace is still the best option, but I think it would be interesting to explore this third alternate route. Besides, Andrea Cáceres, who volunteered in the first call for astronauts, signed up for the scenario in which she would be trained extensively before being shot up into space; she probably wouldn't agree to being sent up in three days with no time to prepare or say goodbye.

Between Cáceres and Grace, Grace is the obvious decision. But between the very willing secondary engineer and Grace? That one's a little harder.

***SPOILERS FOR PROJECT HAIL MARY***

Just thinking about how Rocky wouldn't have quite understood the story of Orpheus and Eurydice until Grace turned around for him.

He'd probably understand the concept, but I think he would struggle to visualize it. After all, Eridians can't "look" behind themselves; they can always hear their surroundings from any direction. If he were Orpheus, he'd tell himself that he would never be tempted to look back, like most people do when they first hear the story and because the idea of not seeing someone right behind you is just so foreign.

And then he and Grace separate to go home. And Rocky has to watch him go. And then Grace turns around when Rocky's ship fails.

He'd hear about how Grace would stop his engines every once in a while just to look at Blip-A's Petrova flare, even though it would slow his own trip home. He'd remember being able to see nothing in the emptiness of space, wondering if Grace would at least make it home safe. I think that's when he'd really understand: to love is to turn around.

Also what's the Eridian equivalent of Orpheus and Eurydice? What would be their version of not turning around? Is it just them? Are they the new mythology?

Grace is both horrified and amused to realise that a more accurate translation for what Rocky’s been saying is “shit shit shit”.

My absolute favorite Jayvik fic “good luck, babe” by Kosmos_Relic on ao3 is super long and I love it so much. it’s long and also very emotional (whump and angst heavy) but so worth it (I say as if it’s not unfinished but it is tagged happy ending so)

And you’re the first person I thought of that does podfics I would absolutely love to be able to listen to it, even if it’s just a few chapters.

But obviously, don’t do it if it’s not your sort of fic or like.. For any reason. I just thought I’d throw the suggestion in the pot

Oh, that is long! But yeah, that seems like a great fic! Podfics Resume Updating in October!

Thank you all for your patience during this (somewhat unplanned) hiatus! I now have a definitive date for when I will resume recording: October 10th! I really didn't think irl stuff would keep me this long, but alas, the curse AO3 strikes all of us in mysterious ways.
