Vodka Stinger

Vodka Stinger 3.5 oz vodka, .5 oz creme de menthe...... Still mintier than hell (if hell was one big peppermint!) I think if I like these at all, they are with very little creme de menthe!

Mojito Serve in short glass 2 oz rum 12 mint leaves .9 oz simple syrup (2 parts sugar, 1 part water) 1 oz lime juice 4 oz club soda 4 ice cubes Place mint leaves in bottom of glass. Add ice, Rum, syrup, and lime juice, and muddle. Add soda water and garnish with mint leaves.

#$$%ing Google+

In the last 24 hours I've gotten two emails from confused and irritated people that were annoyed over the fact that when I posted stuff to Google+ and they were in my circle they got Emailed even though they were not members of Google+ I had a feeling that the email feature would be annoying to people, but I had to test it out anyway. ;-) What I didn't count on was people getting all confused over the feature. My sister tried to reply to the automated mail, and was confused when the mail bounced. A friend overseas thought that maybe my email account had "gotten hacked." Just goes to show that Google went a little too far with that feature. I am guessing that it was meant to keep Google+ in non-users minds, and maybe get them to sign up for it after getting a few emails. But I think it had the opposite effect, making those people irritated with me, and Google+ and not wanting to have anything to do with it.

Tomte's Take on Cape Codder

A traditional Cape Codder recipe: Cape Codder 6 oz chilled cranberry juice cocktail 1.5 oz vodka 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Pour into a tall glass filled with ice. I like to make my Cape Codder this way: 3 oz vodka 3 oz 100% pure cranberry juice (not cocktail) 1 oz simple syrup 1/2 oz Rose's Lime Juice 6 ice cubes 5 oz Club Soda stir all non-carbonated ingredients. Add ice cubes, and fill with club soda in a tall glass Either way, it's very refreshing. Great fall drink!

Interesting article on "Jisui" aka what 1dollarscan offers

It looks like Jisui, or the act of scanning your physical book into an ebook, is coming under increased legal scrutiny in Japan. Makes me wonder about the future of the 1dollarscan service in the US. Trouble Cooking in the Japanese Ebook market I guess I'd better get the rest of my books scanned in ASAP. ;-)

Cocktail Creep

Bottle here, bottle there... It adds up! Not only that, but I just realized that a couple of bottles of vodka I had in the freezer are missing from this picture. Of course it also doesn't include the glassware I have, or some cocktail shakers, etc. And it is far from complete in the sense that a really well stocked bar would have some whiskey type liquors as well. But it's amazing how you pick up a bottle of this or a bottle of that in order to make cocktail x, y, or z, and before you know it you have a huge collection of various bottles!

Optimizing 1dollarscan files

I was showing a friend of mine my 1dollarscan files, and he ran them through the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, clicked the "optimize" button, and was able to dramatically reduce the overall size of the files. First file was a 110 page book with color photographs. Originally 19MB, after running the optimization it is now only 6MB. Second file was a 140 page book with no photographs. Originally 47MB, after running optimization it is now only 15MB! The files looked exactly the same on the iPad, and seem to be rendering a little faster. A closer look reveals that the size savings was achieved by reducing the resolution of the images in the PDF. While this is fine for viewing on the iPad, on the PC you could notice increased graininess when viewing the file at 100% zoom. So I think I'll be hanging onto the full resolution originals, but for other devices with limited space this might be a good option for making the file more usable! The next thing I want to try is extracting the OCR layer to create an ePub or MOBI file suitable for a dedicated ebook reader such as the Kindle. Watch this space...

Best Golden Margarita on the Rocks

Best Golden Margarita on the Rocks 2 oz gold tequila 1/2 oz Grand Marnier (This is a critical ingredient. Cointreau also goes very well, but really doesn't have the same aromatic flavor that Grand Marnier has. If you cheat here with Triple Sec or Orange Curaçao, you must add a dash of orange bitters!) 1/2 oz fresh lime juice. 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice. 1/2 simple syrup. 1/2 oz Limoncello (I think this is the "secret ingredient" in most restaurant margaritas --that extra citrus flavor adds a lot without making the drink more tart). Rim the glass with coarse salt. Mix with a bunch of ice cubes in a shaker and shake violently for about 15 seconds (until ice starts to crystallize on the outside of your metal shaker). Pour contents into an old-fashioned (short) glass. Garnish with Lime.

1dollarscan books and the iPad 2

My 1dollarscan books “arrived” today. One thing I'm finding is that not all iPad PDF readers can handle these large files very well. ezPDF: opens the file and renders it well, but there is about a 1 second pause between turning pages while it renders. Dropbox's built in PDF reader: Very slow to open the file, and extremely slow to turn pages, to the point of being nearly unusable. Stanza: Opens fast, page turns are fast. Best reader of what I've testing as far as speed is concerned, but I don't quite like the way that the text looks. Grainy. There might be a setting for this I haven't found yet though. iOS Safari: Trying to download one of the files it actually viewed for me in iOS Safari. There were pauses scrolling through the file as it rendered subsequent pages, but it looked nice. iBooks: Comparable to ezPDF; opens the file and renders it well but with a 1 second pause between pages. Or more accurately it immediately turns the page but the new page is fuzzy for about 1 second before it sharpens to a readable clarity. I'll probably end up using iBooks or ezPDF to read these files, but if I can find the setting to make Stanza look better that would be my first choice! At the end of the day, however, I'm pretty happy with the product 1dollarscan delivered. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be sending them a whole box of books in the near future, since the two test books turned out so well.

Frosty Lemon Martini

Frosty Lemon Martini 3 ounces citrus vodka 1 ounce limoncello 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Sugar and lemon wheel for garnish Rim a chilled cocktail glass with sugar and set aside. Combine vodka, limoncello and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with ice, and shake briskly to chill. Strain into the prepared glass, and garnish with a lemon wheel.

1dollarscan books are here!

My 1dollarscan books "arrived" today. So far they exceed my expectations, but they are also not perfect. I have not done much testing yet other than download them and view them in Adobe Reader 8 for PC. Two issues: 1) they must have the Japanese version of Arial embedded, as I was prompted to download the "Asian language pack." I hope this isn't going to pose a problem with third party PDF readers on iPad and such. Gotta test that next. 2) on the smaller of the two books (Dwelling of the Light by Rowan Williams) I noticed that some of the pages are visibly crooked. Not enough to make it unreadable, but noticeable. The other larger book did not have this issue. I'm more impressed than not... but the big test will be to see how well they render/read on the iPad 2!
