On a more serious note, I noticed something interesting in this scene.  We know that the tidal wave submerging Riku represents his fall to darkness, but before that scene happens we get this.  Sora is blinded by a light, and when his eyes adjust he sees Riku standing there in calm water.  As the tidal wave rises, it obscures the light.  What’s interesting is that even though we learn in KH1 that Riku was originally meant to be the wielder of the Kingdom Key, we never really know why he was chosen.  Why would the Kingdom Key choose someone so susceptible to darkness?  I think this is the answer.  Riku was filled with light.  When Terra visits Destiny Islands, immediately he sees the light not in Sora, but in Riku.

Maybe it’s because Riku had so much light in him that he was especially susceptible to darkness- swinging from one extreme to another before finding a better balance that made him stronger in the end.

This reminds me of something Nomura said about the actual moment Sora acquired the keyblade from Riku, since this cgi clip seems to be alluding to that particular event:

Nomura: …there is a scene in Destiny islands where Riku is being swallowed by darkness, a light appears, and Sora first obtains the keyblade. With the setting I created, the darkness that surrounds them is Riku’s heart’s darkness. At that moment, Sora enters the darkness, and the light he sees inside is Riku’s heart’s light. Sora, who was squirming in the darkness to save Riku, touched the light and temporarily obtained the Keyblade from Riku. — KH1 Ultimania

So it’s interesting that Riku, while his heart’s darkness was so intense that it swarmed the both of them, also simultaneously emitted a bright flash of light from within. In that moment his darkness was overwhelming, but his light was still brilliant enough for sora to see & touch.

Ah, that’s really interesting.  I never knew that light was meant to be the light of Riku’s heart.
