The Neuroscience behind why you need 4 hobbies 📝
You’ve probably seen that quote about needing four hobbies “one that makes you money, one that keeps you fit, one that makes you creative & one that helps you grow” What people forget is the brain science behind why these four matter so much
A hobby that makes you money - Working on something that builds income or skills triggers dopamine, your brain’s progress chemical. It strengthens the prefrontal cortex, motivates you and teaches your brain to associate effort with reward
A hobby that keeps you fit - Movement resets your nervous system. Exercise releases BDNF, which improves mood, focus, and stress resilience. Movement strengthens your brain
A hobby that makes you creative - Creative activities activate the default mode network which is the part responsible for imagination and emotional processing. When you create, your brain goes into a calmer state that helps regulate emotions and have new ideas
A hobby that helps you grow - Learning something new increases neuroplasticity. Growth hobbies tell your brain that you’re evolving, helping you break old patterns and expand your identity
Everything serves a positive purpose and should be the core of your routines
i love bein on this app. dnt nobody know me. dnt nobody care what i be doin. peaceful
I NEED women to get comfortable telling folks “You’re not doing enough for me” and “I need more than what you’re capable or willing to provide.” I need my ladies to say it, mean it, and STAND on it, because that’s where your best life and best LOVE resides. It’s not selfish, it’s self preservation. Too many times, people come into our lives, leave with more than what they had, when they came, and we are left depleted and broken when they’re gone.
Dead it. ♥️
no one tells you how much of life takes practice. not just writing, painting, running, singing, etc, but practicing how to make friends. how to make the right ones. getting practiced at how to be a good friend, a good sibling, a good person. practice identifying when people haven’t earned that. learning to recognize your right to rage and, eventually, how to offer mercy. so much of life is muscle memory, and i’ve begun to realize there are so many more parts of ourselves to flex and stretch and strengthen than those we’re taught in anatomy lessons
at a certain point you just get tired of your own shit. you have to force yourself to meditate, workout, eat mindfully and read the books to form a routine that gives you a sense of happiness within yourself again. it’s exhausting i know, but you gotta keep fighting for yourself because no one will take care and love you the way you can for own being. this life is not something to go bout so casually, everyday is your first and last time to embrace this moment. this life was gifted to you with a planet to explore and souls to experience. so show up for yourself.
Isolation is Not Healthy for You
The Western world is going through an isolation crisis, and our generation is the one most affected by it. Let's talk about it.
It seems like people nowadays have relegated the importance of community and belonging to the back burner. We no longer place the value social interactions have historically had to them because we no longer view them as needed but as optional. This couldn't be further from the truth. Lack of socialization has been linked with higher risks of disease than smoking. It increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's in old age. It causes people to become depressed and hopelessness and detaches us from the correct way to interact and become functioning members of society around others.
Socializing is crucial to one's well-being, regardless if our personalities are intro or extroverted. Introversion should never be used as a synonym for isolation. When you look at many people across the Global South, despite the issues they have to face, they usually seem much happier than those in the West because they have a sense of belonging and community.
Online interactions through social media can never replace real, face-to-face interactions. In fact, being chronically online will only make you more detached from reality.
I've personally made it a goal of mine for 2024 to become as social as possible. If I can't find people on the same wavelength as me in my city or country, I will travel abroad. I refuse to let my youth be wasted by keeping myself from experiences that only other people can provide me with. This time that I have right now nobody will be able to get back to me, and I refuse to live it alone. As I always say, it is better to be alone than surrounded by the wrong company, but it is better to have good company around you than to be alone. To find those people you must be proactive and committed to searching for them.
