Itâs one of my favourites because I think it holds the most emotional weight in the entire episode, that emotional romance, is a reminder of what SE is. Like heâs saying goodbye and Elena canât handle it, her devastation is quiet and subtle but the moment Stefan takes his hand away from her face because heâs about to leave:
Elena reaches forward to hug him because sheâs not ready to let go:
and back when theories were flying around about Damon erasing Elena and Stefanâs memories of each other, I told anons the only way I would be OK with it is if they did something like BTVS where Buffy was freaking out when she was losing her memory of a Human Angel:
and while the SE scene was a lot more subtle and less urgent than the Bangel scene, I think that they did their own unique version of âthereâs not enough time, Iâm not ready to let goâ with that hug:
and it showed just how much they love each other.
The entire compulsion scene in 3x05 because it encapsulates both of their stubbornness and their stubbornness is the crux of their entire relationship.
The moment below is a display of Elena stubbornly refusing to give up hope on Stefan, sheâs there, she loves him even throughout all of this madness and fear and chaos. He has just ripped people apart in front of her and she can still utter the words âI love youâ because she knows, she knows that this is all out of his control and the man she loves is still in there, she can see past all of the horror and the shock to say the words âI love you.â Â
This moment displays Stefanâs stubborn humanity thatâs lurking beneath the surface even when you think it isnât and the access to his humanity, the gateway to his emotion, to his sense of self is Elena, the love he has for her and the love she has for him, she has a stubborn place in his heart and he stubbornly holds onto it:
And itâs so stubborn that even Klaus sees it:
And when it comes down to the moment of truth, when it comes down to whether or not that stubbornness is enough, whether or not itâs as real and as profound and as strong as Stefan saying it is, as Klaus is saying it is, as Elena thinks it is:
if that stubbornness can withstand even more even after Stefan has smashed himself against lockers:
and mutilated himself with a broomstick:
even after all of that, will it win out?
And even when Stefan is forced to fail, that stubbornness lingers because when Klaus slams him against the wall, Elena runs after them, afraid for Stefanâs life, for his soul, for his sense of self:
Itâs their entire relationship from how much they love each other to the external circumstances that keep trying to fuck them up from Stefan battling his urges to be with her from Elena staying by his side throughout it all, itâs a microcosm of their entire dynamic.
Itâs the most sensual love scene on the entire show, itâs actually about making love because this entire moment is about connection, I really wish I could see the script for this love scene, and itâs sensual because itâs about touch, itâs about committing the otherâs body to memory like the way Elena grazes her fingers over Stefanâs hand, the way she runs her thumb along his lips, and the gazing? Intimate af.
4. Their Living Room Blood Share
Because itâs ham and eggs
This Elena and Stefan being ham and I say it encapsulates their devotion rather than their commitment. Earlier in the episode they have a fight that could actually drive them apart or put a wedge in their relationship but instead, Elena devotes herself to the relationship by allowing Stefan to drink from her and Stefanâs devotion is seen through the fact that a kiss from Elena is enough to make his demons dissipate, itâs one of the most romantic moments of the series.
To be quite frank with you it can pretty much be any SE dance because:
Stelena dances, whatâs great about them, is that every time they share one, theyâre being brought back together despite external circumstances, itâs a reminder of their bond, their connection, their relationship, their love. It always starts off with some hesitancy, one person has to make the initial approach and then when they start dancing, you see them connecting.
In 1x12, it looks as if Stefan is going to disappoint Elena by refusing to do a move with her but then he grabs her by the wrist and dips her, literally and figuratively sweeping her off her feet because seeing her happy makes him happy.
In 2x18, Stefan doesnât want to go to the dance while Elena is eager and when they do go under less than desirable circumstances, Stefan dances with her to make her feel safe, feel normal, feel less tense and itâs an effort worth noting considering how much of a brooder Stefan is supposed to be.
In 3x14, Stefan spends so much time trying to make Elena and Damon and everyone think that he doesnât feel, that he doesnât care about or love Elena anymore but when she bumps into him and they start to dance, all of that history, of all that longing is communicated for both of them through their gazes; he gets Elena to laugh while also revealing just how well he knows her by saying that Damon needs to learn that she can take care of herself.
In 3x20 Stefan and Elena are trying to find their way back to normalcy again, everything is awkward and delicate, Â thereâs slight discomfort between them because of everything thatâs happened â Stefan turned off his humanity, Elena kissed Damon, the Originals are wreaking havoc on Mystic Falls â like things are tense. But the moment they start to dance, all of that doesnât matter, what matters is that theyâre in each otherâs arms, theyâre comfortable, at ease, fall back into place and itâs a combination of living in the moment and relishing their history.
In 4x19, this is the dance that evokes memories of all of the other dances they had with each other but the fact that Stefan makes the actions as he reminisces, the fact that he touches her neck and her waist, strokes her fingers and dips her in present time is a signal that itâs always going to be like this, that connection, that intimacy, that seduction doesnât go away no matter the current bullshit in their way and Elena reciprocates, she strokes his fingers back, her words sound unmoved but her expression says otherwise and the fact that she says âWhat heart?â but doesnât walk away, she keeps dancing with him shows that she feels it even when she isnât supposed to.
