Tension rolled through his shoulders as he paced, back and forth, side to side, across each square foot of the training centre. Haymitch had long since given up holing away â he had sponsors to grease, and this year, his team finally had a CHANCE.
Conversations were animated and full of emotion: girl on fire!, star-crossed, higher odds! Those words were on fast forward, thrown at any sponsor with a fat wallet willing to spend it on a winning tribute. Katniss was a winner, he knew that in his heart. Peeta was too, but there came a time when you had to choose.
Grey eyes locked onto the large projection screens in the square as he kept close track of his tributes. Theyâd teamed up with Rue from 12, the little shadow whoâd endeared herself to his kids. A smile pulled up his perpetual frown and he watched the three of them tend to each other. Peeta was in bad shape; he knew what that meant, and yet, he didnât want to accept it, either. So he kept making deals, shaking hands, reducing his number of drinks until he was almost always sober. He told himself that they would WIN, that it was all worth it. Donât think about what happens after, donât think about the longing for death that comes when you realise youâre never gonna stop playing this game.
He was just closing the deal, clasping hands and grinning ear-to-ear, when a loud, gut-clenching sound echoed around the square and he whirled to face the screen. Wisps of hair fluttered in front of his face, his hard breaths scattering the strands in slow motion. Because all he could do was stare â stare and feel the hope heâd allowed to grow shatter in an instant.
They were d e a d. Thereâs no way they could survive that. He clenched a fist tight and brought it up to his forehead, trying to steady himself. Watch Rue, see what she does. Maybe thereâs a small bit of hope after all.
as quickly as the shaking and thundering had began, the world goes still and quiet. the trees rustle with final movements before the breeze is the only thing that whispers through them. light filters through, GOLDEN and emerald, warm upon her skin that had gone  f r i g i d  in those few moments. her bundle of herbs was still held tight in her hands, throat constricted in on itself as she struggles to breathe. itâs okay. itâs okay. sheâs fine, it was just... what even WAS that? doesnât know, doesnât care, realizes thereâs a bit of a pain on her back leg. not broken. a sprained ankle, perhaps? oh god - if sheâs hurt, what about katniss? what about peeta? terror strikes as sharp as the axes she was familiar with at home, the ones used to chop down rotted, useless trees. this time, itâs a savage attack on her insides, insides that have not rotted, ones filled with butterflies and HOPE. so why, why are they attacking?
she stumbles, blind, through the forest - driven by her need to protect those she had grown to care so much about. trees that were not there before slow her approach, herbs still held tight as she clambers over, knuckles split on the harsh wood. she  c r a c k s  tender bones upon rocks but she does not care, does not falter at the pain. their names are a mantra, a hymn, a prayer - repeated endless, begging. PEETA. KATNISS. PEETA. KATNISS. have to be alive, canât be gone, theyâre too golden too pure too good too strong. she canât do this without them.
yet even as she reaches the cave, she knows - knows that her friends are gone. for the cave is not there at all, only stone and moss and vining that had once decorated the walls. the herbs drop from her grasp, soundless as they land - gaze wide and filled with an EMPTINESS as she bites at her trembling lip. canât cry, canât cry, she canât, she canât, she is. she cries and her tears are crystalline as they fall, hands shaking just as badly as the earth had before. and then sheâs moving, approaching the rubble as sheâs screaming their names.
sheâs screaming their names and her throat is being rubbed raw, but she does not care. itâs another prayer, another mantra.  â katniss! katniss! peeta?!  â   nothing. no reply, just silence. and she keeps screaming, keeps screaming for them and waits for any kind of reply, knows she isnât going to get one. claws at the rubble until her nails are GONE and cracked and bloodied, until all thats left is soft nail beds and bruises. her stomach churns and she sobs because her friends are gone. her friends are dead beneath rubble in the place they were supposed to be safe, and itâs not- itâs not fair. sheâs not going to survive this.
