The moment the doors opened, we saw the full stadium, illuminated with faces. Silver walls shone with the banners, green and black clashing against the red and blue. One only team would get the lead, and it was not going to be those pond-drinking Witherbloom.
Frog-Food took his position as our leader. He had an official name, but like his hairline and hygiene, nobody actually remembered that about him. I took my position next to the Mage Tower itself, our golden sky-needle with our mascot standing proud. Our duo of defences stood behind the tower, and finally our other charging player, standing on the opposite side of Frog-Food. Witherbloom weren’t going to be difficult, if anything our other charger was my real competition. The Prismari Princess herself. She’s only spoken about herself using a triple-barrel surname, something Eldrainian. She’s become the Princess partially to mock her ‘holier than thou’ persona, but also because we’re convinced she’s actually a royal, not just some play-pretend prick.
But this isn’t a game where I mock my (obviously) stupid teammates. This is a story about how I crushed Witherbloom single-handedly while everyone else complained about integrity.
The match began, and we took to our standard techniques. Diving directly towards the backline, using the Primsari-official castings of Haste, pushing up to the enemy chargers. Foul roots began to kick up, but we easily torched them! Princess actually did something, she cast Pyrohelix, the roots bursting into flame as I kept charging ahead, hasting up to their commander. Frog-Food was already behind, shooting out bursts of colour everywhere. Fireworks kept going off, as Princess moved forward next to me. Already I knew we were in trouble, so I dropped Haste and channeled a Wall of Frost, angling it away from us to stop whatever the Witherbloom commander was conjuring, some many-legged worm. Princess stepped up, tossing freezing darts through the beast, as their defenders began to summon their own swarms, a thick smog of bugs already moving towards her, as Frog-Food cast out this glittery firework, immediately swarmed and devoured by their mosquitoes. We aren’t even dealing with the Quandrix and their countering spells? Immediately after, Princess goes back to the number one target. She’s getting pestered on top of the icy sheet, clearly about to slip, and the charger we passed is hounding Frog-Food, he’s caught up with thick, black tar surrounding him.
As her hands raise up a shimmering aurora, I cast out a Pyrohelix of my own, maintaining focus (if barely) on my Wall of Frost. If only William got to have all the roasted remains, I think he’d like the crunch. Frog-Food was already being saved by our defenders, it was time for me and Princess to do something truly spectacular.
Princess cared a lot more for the illusion segments of our course. She learned how to express herself, iteratively. Duplication, if temporary. She doubled herself, a Mirror Image now standing where she did, as the Witherbloom commander immediately targeted it. The shattering form gave her enough time to move 10 feet ahead, as I used his off-guarded state as a chance to freeze him where he stood, imprisoning his legs, binding the wiry gremlin to the ground.
Just their defenders to deal with. Their chargers had already made the same run for it we had, but they were still being hassled by a commander and defence. Teamwork time. My old Wall of Frost was melting away, as I surged out a column of water, which Princess froze. She took up the task of distraction from here, Mirror Images already swarming back against the bug-eyed freaks on defence. They already had a plan to deal with us though, as I sprinted up, thick mud began wrapping itself around the pillar, another swarm of insects was building up and Princess was being held in place. Red bubbles began to surge from her arm - blood? Already? So Toom’s not allowed to use a frog to take somebody out, but blood loss is okay? The fury was enough to let me cast some quick Twinbolts, knocking both defenders on their heads a couple times to lose their focus. The mud loosened, the swarms flickered in and out, I had a chance. One leap was all I needed to grab the mascot - The pest was ours.
The slimy beast under my arm, I jumped back onto our icy platform, knee-sliding down and back to the ground. All eyes on me. Even Princess got out of her impromptu transfusion.
“Frog-Food, catch the frog-food!”
His scowl was so worth it. He grabbed the now flying pest as Princess Cancelled a retrieval spell (didn’t even see what it was, she just saw sparks and cast Cancel. She’s honestly a dream teammate!) Frog-Food started the charge back, as me and Princess had to hold out against three aggressive Witherbloom mages, already casting out some new horror. Moments like this I’m thankful for having friends who know their spells. Cancel, Overcomplicate, even a Lightning Bolt to stop another surge of roots. Frog-Food ran into our defenders arms, it was game.
