considering what's going on w the phf it's unlikely i'll keep watching the rivs or the pride since they're both being eviscerated by the pwhpa's entitled asses, which is still less upsetting than kremenchuk (and every other uhl team) having zero upcoming matches listed. this is prob really stupid but last season i felt like, by them having hockey at all, that this was not a country which is fully crushed. they could still hold sports matches (which were interrupted by air raids sometimes but still). so them not having anything scheduled (at least not yet), not even months out, makes me really nervous.

on a related note if anyone needs a charity to donate to, Save Ukrainian Hockey Dream exists to try and make it so that ukrainian kids will still get to play hockey. at the time i'm writing this, they are very far from their goal.

no, absolutely not, and that is really a far cry from what i said. I just think that it sounds like this ruling was truly made for the safety of the participants. It's not as if you're wrong about there being antisemites out there, but it sounds like the council made the decision to protect AGAINST them, not because they agree with them. I understand that in this situation, you're likely seeing the worst sides of some people, and that is why you are so aggressive about trying to protest any seeming injustice, but I don't really see anything in this headline and quote that seems unjust. If they have reason to believe that there would be antisemetic violence because of the inclusion of the Israeli team, it seems logical to tell them they can't come play because it is a safety risk for all the participants.

So the answer is to punish the Israeli players by not letting them play, as opposed to increasing security and educating people about why hating Jewish people is bad? Your answer is for Jewish people and Israelis to hide instead of taking steps to make those communities safer for us?

This is unjust. This is cruel. This is setting a precedent for any organisation leery of Jews and Israelis participating in society to be able to say, "oh actually we're not letting Jews and Israelis play/participate because we're concerned for their safety, we're toooootally protecting them from the antisemites". It's a front. It's the organisation having a convenient excuse to not be responsible for making their venues and their society safe for Jews. Because it's easy to exclude us, instead of taking steps to increase security and educate people.

When will it be safe again for us to participate? How long do you want us to not participate "for our own safety", and what happens if it's never safe enough for us to participate again?

trying to figure out how to say this delicately. i do think that the pwhl is going to make some progress, and already the support for the league is showing how much of a market there is for women's sports even from a few years ago. but it's kind of been irking me to see so many posts that act like there has never been any arena for women's pro hockey before. like do you understand how many people — how many leagues!! — came before this to even make the pwhl a possibility. do you know how many people have fought tooth and nail for women's pro hockey for DECADES. i'm not saying don't support the league, but don't act like it's the perfect solution to a brand new issue

It’s impressive enough for two men in a very tough, stereotypically masculine sport to talk about things like loneliness and trauma. But I really admire how neither Ullmark nor Ingram shied away from going into detail about what they went through. It’s not easy to talk about breaking down sobbing on the ice or wanting someone to hold you. It’s not easy to say you spent time in a treatment facility. That takes a lot of vulnerability and courage.

honestly i gotta say. seeing flower defy that stupid as fuck rule and wear that beautiful mask anyway means a whole fuck of a lot to me as a minnesotan, a wild fan, and a native hockey fan. there’s so little in this sport to honour or represent us without turning us into a joke or a caricature or a relic of a dead past. this is really, really meaningful and heartening to me in a really personal way.

Im gonna start by saying I’m speaking on this coming from a very hockey and baseball background though it can apply more broad but I truly wish when making domestic violence policies in sports there was significant more focus on how are we gonna support the victims particularly in terms of financial support and visa support. Keep in mind too if you and your significant other are coming from another country to play here you probably do not have a visa that allows you to work which makes it harder to have any financial independence, and even if you are in a situation where you’re playing in your home country your significant others job may make it harder to have your own job due to the fact that you likely will have to suddenly move at some point, perhaps multiple times in the same year. If you speak out about domestic violence you’re facing you fear losing the only stability you systematically have access to and your significant other has way more money/power if you decide to go to court - which is also really the only way to get on your feet if you don’t have a support system through friends and family (and friends can be hard to maintain when you’re moving a bunch!) you’ll also be accused of being a gold digger if you go to court for the crime of wanting some stability and financial independence to allow you to leave the situation and your significant other can choose to drag it out and further drain or harm your finances.

All this to say suspensions or bans are fine in a vacuum like I’m not crying over them but if you actually want to get rid of or limit domestic violence in sports then we need to create infrastructure for partners of athletes to have access to financial freedom, lawyers, protection, housing, immigration lawyers separate from their partner or their team otherwise victims will be discouraged from speaking for fear of losing stability, facing harassment, and anxiety that suspensions will provoke more violence against them and and further strain them financially

Ideally in the wake of the bruins situation, if they truly want to support the victims here, the organization is providing and paying for family and immigration lawyers, a safe alternative place to stay for her and the kids right now, transportation for them, any other expenses. While someone may not end up going with all those options they should at least know they are there and it should also be an ongoing offer, not just immediately in the aftermath. Clarification that this is what I think SHOULD do, not necessarily what I think the bruins will do, because most organizations in sports / society as a whole do not empower victims. Honestly it’s more likely the other wives and girlfriends of players will try to provide this support on their own than the multi billion dollar organization.

There’s a lot im kind of unsure about in terms of contract stuff going forward with how little details we have (ie if there is going to be a legal case or not) and I have not looked at the CBA in a hot second so I don’t want to speak on what that may look like, just that I would like him to not play a game as a Bruin again one way or another however the technicalities of it play out. We will see in the coming days. I don’t have a ton of faith in this organization or any nhl organization doing the right things.

Also I don’t really think I have to repeat this for the ppl of tumblr but I will anyway: someone staying with their partner after a domestic abuse incident doesn’t mean the incident didn’t happen, someone downplaying the incident after can very much be doing so for their safety and doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, someone posting happy pictures of their family before or after doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, be extremely skeptical of “sources” or news from random ass fan accounts
