Shadamy-Amnesia Chapter Five: Hope
Amy looked around the room in awe as Shadow stood behind her. âWow!â was all she could say. âAll of this is yours. From before we got together mostly. Some of its just before we got married, butââ Amy ran across the room. âWhat is this?â She picked up a small case with a tiny key hole on it. âI believe itâs where you kept your diary, if I recall what you told me correctly.â Shadow told her as he walked to her. He took it from her hands and turned it over and pulled a piece of fabric back. Amy gave a small gasp. There was a key taped to the bottom. She took it back from him and pulled the tape off. She had to read it. Maybe she could remember some things sheâd written about. Amy took the key and unlocked it. As she opened the box slowly a quick thought passed through her mind. âWhat if itâs not there?â She sighed with relief when she looked to see a spiraled pink notebook with hearts all over it. Shadow smiled at her. âI know what youâre thinking, but that thing is pretty old, andââ Amy opened it and sat on the floor and began reading right then and there. Ugh! Why wonât Sonic just return my feelings? I thought he liked me. Heâs the only guy thatâs ever been nice to me and Amy stopped. âSonic? Heâs the one that was in the room when we were waiting for you to bring me home, right? How old was I when I wrote this?â âHe is. Iâm not sure. I never even saw it until we moved your stuff here. Judging by the context, though, probably around twelve, give or take.â Shadow said as he read what sheâd seen over her shoulder. âTwelve? Wow, I thought twelve year olds thought boys were gross.â âI think that age group is a little younger, actually.â âWell, still. Sonic?â Amy sounded grossed out herself. Shadow laughed at her. âOh, Yeah. You had it bad for him, Rose. Some people thought you started dating me because you thought I looked like him.â Shadow told her. âWhat? Thatâs ridiculous. You look nothing like Sonic! Not even if I was colorblind would I ever think one of you looked like the other.â Amy argued. âRight. Thatâs exactly what you say to them.â He said. âIt is?â âMhm.â Shadow had stood up and appeared to be looking for something. Amy looked back into the journal, after flipping through about half of it. It was pretty thick, so she figured she used  it for a long time. We ran into Shadow today. He kept staring at me like he was trying to figure out who I was. I said Hi to him but he just ignored me. Maybe he didnât hear me. Rouge told me later that heâd been having a bad day, though. Must have been something to do with G.U.N. When I tried to ask her more about it she said it wasn;t her place to tell me and that if I wanted to know I should talk to him. How am I supposed to do that? Heâs so⊠secluded. I dunno, he just keeps to himself all the time. I think heâd get mad  if I tried to ask him about it. Heâd probably just tell me I need to mind my own business. Iâm really not nosey, I just want to help!  Amy skipped foward a few more pages until she saw his name again. Shadow is SO sweet! He came to check on me today to see if I was feeling okay. He even brought me some soup and fuzzy blankets. Heâs such a good friend. I mean, who worries about someone else on VALENTINEâS DAY? Iâm sure he had a date to get ready for. Everyone always does. It was so nice of him to even think of me and take the time to come over. I never would have thought Shadow would be so caring! Amy laughed at her naivety. Of course heâd liked her then. She just couldnât see it. Now it was clear as day. After that, all the pages mentioned him at least once. She stopped on one that had tear stains on it. Well, I finally got Sonic to go on a date with me. He actually showed up on time too! But it was so weird and awkward. We both agreed it wasnât right and that I should stop acting the way I do about him. We should just be friends. Thatâs great, and Iâm glad Sonic understands why I was so crazy and forgave me. Well, he actually told me that theres nothing to apologize for. But what am i supposed to do now? Iâve wasted years chasing him and making myself look like a fool. No one would ever want to be with me. They all think Iâm insane. Shadow told me that the right person would come along, but I might just have to wait for him.  Yeah, right. Wait for someone who has no idea who I am, or doesnât know about the way I acted. FAT CHANCE! Even if they didnât know, I would have to tell them or theyâd just find out anyway and wonder why I didnât. I told him my looks didnât help either. He said that I was beautiful. Yeah, right! Come on, Shadow. You would never say that to anyone. Amy looked at the date. It was from nine years ago. âWhoa. Hey Shadow, how long have wee been together?â âSeven years since we actually started dating.â He answered as he rummaged through his third box. âWait. Renâs seven. That doesnât make sense.â âHeâs adopted, love.â âWhat? But he has your eyes!â âBelieve it or not, I am not the only hedgehog that has red eyes, Rose.â âDoes he know?â âHe does.â âDid he cry whenââ âAmy, Ren went through kind of a complicated situation. He sort of always knew. Heâs a smart kid.â âWhen did we meet him?â Amy wanted to know. âHe was barely two weeks old, actually. Some idiot put him in a basket and just sat him down behind me one day in the park without anyone noticing. I still donât understand how no one saw, but we had all been standing there like we do a lot and you shoved me or something. I donât remember exactly, but for some reason I stumbled backwards and tripped over the basket. They had a note in it that had his name and birthday and everything asking me and my wife to take care of him. They were talking about you, but we hadnât even started dating yet.â Shadow sighed as he finished the story. âHe went back and forth between you and this weird foster placement agency, but everyone they placed him with always gave him back because of his medical issues. He was with one of us most of the time. Usually you, because I had work. They wouldnât let you adopt him until we got married. Which was insane, but thatâs how they had to have it set up.â âIs that how we fell in love? Taking care of a baby together?â Amy was curious now, and she may as well ask, since they were already on the subject. âWell, not for me. Youâve actually never told me when you fell in love with me.â Shadow said with a small smile. âOh, well, when I get my memory back, Iâll make sure to let you know!â Amy promised with a giggle. Shadow stopped looking through the box he was tearing things out of. âHere it is!â He pulled out a very old looking box and brought it over to Amy. She took it from him. âDo you recognize this at all?â âUm⊠No.â She answered with a small voice. âOpen it, Rose.â He told her softly. She did so to find an intricate antique necklace. She inhaled sharply as the image of a white female hedgehog with green eyes flashed through her mind. Then something else, but she couldnât make it out. She tried to make it clearer, but it disappeared. âWhat was that?â Shadow asked. She had zoned out for a good two minutes. âDid you remember something?â âUm, I saw a woman⊠A white hedgehog.â Shadow frowned. He didnât know what she was talking about. âDo you know whoâŠâ âI donât, but I never asked you much about it. It was a sore subject for you. Maybe we should ask your dad.â Shadow suggested. âHow would he know about it?â Amy asked as she watched him stand. âThat belonged to your mother. I donât know what she looked like. Iâm sure he does. Maybe you saw her.â Shadow told her. âOh, okay, but⊠there was something else. I just couldnâtâŠâ âItâs okay. Maybe itâll come to you later.â â⊠Letâs look at some more stuff first.â Amy said. She looked in her lap and saw the diary sheâd forgotten was there. It reminded her to ask him one more question. âHey, why did you wait so long to ask me out?â âYou asked me.â He told her. âExcuse me?â âYou asked me, on Valentineâs Day. You were eighteen.â âBut, itâs obvious that you had a gigantic crush on me for a long time before that according to this!â Amy waved her diary in the air. âAnd?â âAnd? And! And, why didnât you ask me out!? I was clearly miserable, thinking no one liked me!â She stood, a little angry. âAmy, you werenât old enough for me toââ âAre you freaking kidding me!? I wasnât OLD ENOUGH? What does that even mean? Iâm old enough now, though, huh?â Amy exclaimed. âYou were under eighteen before all that, and I wasnât.â â⊠But its not like weâd beââ âThat didnât matter. Your dad would have killed me, and if he didnât get to me first, Iâd have been thrown in jail. You canât keep something like that private, or out of speculation. Everyone would think thatâs what was happening, and thatâs enough for it to get out of hand quickly.â âOkay, so why was I the one to ask you out then?â She challenged. âYou just beat me to it. I was planning on asking you that day but you asked me before i could even say hello to you.â âWhenâs my birhday?â She asked. âDecember 15th. Why?â Shadow asked, confused. âAnd Valentineâs Day is in February, right?â âYes.â âSo what were you doing those two months in between that you couldnât ask me?â Amy asked. âI was on a mission for G.U.N. I wasnât even around on your birthday, or I would have asked you then. I got home a week before Valentineâs.â Shadow explained. âOh.â Amy had nothing else to challenge him with. âSorry.â âAbout what? You were just asking questions.â âYeah but I got mad.â She admitted. âItâs fine. Letâs go see your dad.â
