Let the James Webb Space Telescope blow your mind: This strange-looking space brain is actually a nebula of gas and dust created by a dying star.
The nebula, PMR 1, is the result of an aging star expelling its outer layers episodically. The star’s first outburst was mostly hydrogen, creating the outer shell of the nebula that appears like a transparent bubble in near-infrared light. Later eruptions shed various material, which is what looks like a brain. The dark lane running vertically through the center, possibly a bipolar jet of dense material, completes the illusion of a two-hemisphere exposed cranium.
