Right now there are a ton of protests in Malaysia and elsewhere, called Bersih (Clean), calling for anti-corruption and anti-election fraud. As I’m writing this there are about 100,000 people marching in KL, and many more joining them in places as far-flung as Wellington, Melbourne, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

As expected, the Malaysian government is unhappy, and has been trying to put the kibosh on these protestors for some time - banning yellow shirts, calling the marchers “unpatriotic”, and so on. One of the things they’re doing is spying on and collecting information about Malaysians protesting abroad so they can be sued.

Friends are reporting that they’ve seen Government officials pose as tourists or people in crowds to covertly take photos. Some people on Government scholarships have been hauled up thanks to these photos. And the Government has the gall to say it’s “not a dictatorship”.

Even me posting this could get me in trouble. But I wanted to get the word out and reach out to the international community of activists and supporters, Malaysian or not, to call for change.

I’d welcome any discussion and suggestions for how the world can support Malaysians, especially those overseas who may or may not have any legal protection from their host countries. Activist skillshares, getting in touch with your local representatives, anything at all. Let the world know!
