little doodle of book Toothless in the style of the movies!
I was just thinking, if the HTTYD books were turned into a movie or TV series without any changes at all… it would be really violent. Because of:
The dragon that bit Hiccup’s leg and held on as he jumped from Wild Dragon Cliff
The dragon Gobber beheaded with his double-headed axe
Fireworm and Killer “ripping chunks out of each other” or something along those lines
Toothless’s chest wound
The Skullion’s horn grazing Hiccup’s chest and giving him That Scar™
That whole scene with Stoick and the Fighting-Against-Superior-Numbers Maneuver
The gladiator arena scene??? Like seriously how was that allowed to be in a children’s book???
The reindeer and Goliath but we won’t talk about him getting brutally sliced open one by one with no mercy
The water on the deck of the American Dream 2, described as red with blood after the Leviathorgan attack
The Berserk village being, you know, on fire (and Camicazi gleefully murdering Berserks left and right at the tender age of eleven)
Very Vicious’s Monstrous Nightmare being killed and nearly all the boys wounded during the dragon attack
The Razorwings who would sometimes accidentally chop of the heads of the dragons flying near them and “heads screaming and breathing fire and spitting lightning bolts fell into the gorge below” or something along those lines
Basically the whole series past Book 9
And that’s just the things I can remember off the top of my head.
Like… there’s so much violence that is kind of glossed over and accepted as almost a part of the setting. Which really goes to show how easy it is to hide this stuff in books. And it’s not just for HTTYD—I have noticed that movie adaptations tend to markedly tone down the violence compared to their books. I don’t know, it was just an interesting midnight thought.
The progress so far of my first cosplay EVER, and I decided to do Ze Great Camicazi from the How to train your Dragon book series…the older version because she’s a small child and I’m a 5'7 adult, so yeah :) I love her personality and the fact that she was one of the first characters that taught me to love my insane crazy hair!
All I wanted to draw was Hiccup and now look at what I’ve done…
This was my first attempt to draw a fictional character in a realistic way I swear this is going to embarrass me in a few months
언니의 그림은 😍!!
GUYS. GUYSSSS! There will be more httyd books!!!!!!! :D She’s doing a live twitter chat right now!
*INCOHERENT SCREAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Wow I forgot I drew this surprisingly gay picture of book Hiccup and Fishlegs. I dropped the ball on this one, my bad.
It was supposed to be all friendship and “here bro I know you got a lot on your plate and you’re really stressed because everything sucks right now- so here just rest your head for a bit no homo”
But like everything else I do it wound up gayer than it should be. Whoops
How to tell if someone has read the HTTYD books
They draw the Slavemark EVERYWHERE.
They will call Hiccup a king, not a chief.
Camicazi will appear in the conversation. It’s inevitable.
They won’t let you forget Hiccup has red hair and blue eyes.
You mention “Snotlout” and they immediately burst into tears and start uncontrollably screaming at you.
Frankly, if you mention anything about the last three books of the series, you will receive screaming and tears.
They will greet you “Howdeedodeethere!” They might know some other miscellaneous words and phrases in Dragonese.
Potatoes.
Cressida Cowell is referred to as “MY QUEEN.”
In the same sentence of calling Cowell “queen”, you might also get lengthy, capslock-covered diatribes about Hiccup, his suffering, and “HASN’T HE BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH ALREADY?????”
It’s hard to just say “Hiccup.” It’s just as likely going to be “Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third.”
They know how to insult because they’ve passed Advanced Rudery.
There will be a LOT more conversation about Fishlegs.
The golden trio are Fishlegs, Hiccup, and Camicazi.
They will know EVERYTHING about Hiccup’s family lineage and can talk to you about it for hours.
They will probably “nope” out of the room if you say “Excellinor.”
They might get used if you use the word “Furious” and you’re not talking about a dragon.
They will be very insistent about Hiccup being a master swordfighter. Don’t forget that.
They will probably be quoting a lot of amazing, sage phrases. All of these sayings come from the HTTYD books. Ex: “A Hero cannot triumph all the time.”
“There were dragons when I was a boy” will evoke an explosion of feels.
They will be urging you to read the books because they’re just so AMAZING JUST READ THEM READ THEM ALL.
Who Should You Fight: HTTYD Books Edition
Hiccup the Third: Don't do it. It doesn't matter if you win or not, he's going to forgive you either way and you'll feel bad. He knows you're better than this. Don't fight Hiccup.
Fishlegs: You could absolutely beat him but why would you want to, you monster
Camicazi: You won't win but she's probably going to try to fight you at some point anyway so you might as well get it over with
Stoick the Vast: Is always down to fight for fun and getting on in years but he also cut his way though a horde of faceless bloodthirsty dragons that one time so. Maybe not.
Valhallarama: She'll kick your ass and it will be amazing. You'll thank her.
Grimbeard the Ghastly: You probably shouldn't but if anyone deserves a punch in the face it's him
Alvin the Treacherous: Depends on whether it's slim, charming Alvin focused on self-preservation or bulky man-of-war Alvin filled with all-consuming desire for revenge. But you should absolutely fight him just on principle
Excellinor: NOPE
Hiccup the Second: We have a WHOLE THIRD OF THE SERIES demonstrating why hurting him is a terrible idea (hint: it's Furious. Furious is why it's a bad idea)

I feel a little explanation is in order.
Like many of us, I was thrilled by the idea of the Celebrate HTTYD week that occurred a while ago, and the prompt of “The Barbaric Archipelago” immediately gave me the motivation and excuse I needed to do something I’d always wanted to do, and recreate Cressida’s map of the HTTYD world in my own style. I have always loved maps, and fictional ones most of all, and I had been wishing to make one for a while but never dared begin. Celebrate HTTYD, combined with the need to practise the pen/watercolour combo for my GCSE, gave me the excuse I had been missing, particularly with the addition of some amazing fancy drawing pens in my art supplies (PITT artist pens by Faber Castell, a.k.a. my best friends in the art world, for anyone interested).
All of my art has a long way to go, because I’m still fine-tuning my style and my strengths, and I have very little experience. I am undoubtedly not the most naturally gifted artist you’ll find. I certainly haven’t a clue where to start when it comes to digital media, so everything here is decidedly traditionally drawn and painted. But what I can do is put in time, and that is how I will learn. I’ve put a lot of time into this, and even while there are countless tumblr artists who could have done this in half the time in a much better way - I’m very proud of it. I hope you enjoy, then, the first proper piece of art I have posted.
The idea here was to try to be as accurate as possible, but also to put this firmly in my own style of artwork. I decided to add in the Hero’s Journey of finding the Lost Things, because I figured that, if I was going to make a map, it might as well have a purpose.
The only problem, of course, is that Celebrate HTTYD was several weeks ago now. I am afraid I have no excuse other than a failure to properly consider Life’s uncomfortable habit of Happening.
(The formatting is obviously a bit awkward too, I’m afraid, but I figured this was the best way to get the full effect).
Nevertheless, I hope someone gets something out of my version of the Barbaric Archipelago. I certainly had great fun making it, and that’s what really matters, after all.
“Be of good cheer, ALL welcome here!”
For @books-are-like-dragons, here’s Alvin vs. Fishlegs!
