Individual Postmortem
Hello! This is my ninth month into the master’s degree and I’m currently in a class called Asset Management. While my first class with this teacher was to help teach us more about prototyping in the game and what approaches t take with them, this class focused slightly more in the documentation and organizational portion of production. We were required to create a game, or at least have an end goal of a game set in sight for the final deliverable. Our game, called Forest Crawler at the moment, is a top-down with a slight ¾ view dungeon crawler where the player travels through various levels in search of the Boss to win the level, during the search the player will run into randomly spawned mini enemies. The art style focuses primarily in low poly are and a cutesy fantasy looks overall. My role was one of the two 3D artists available to the team and throughout the month I created animations for the main character as well as tree and rock props with a different number of variations each so as to provide diversity in the actual decorated dungeon rooms. I found that this month we were much more organized and were able to assign tasks better as well.
Like any starting game/idea there are problems with the initial design. One problem is we don’t have an actual name for our game yet, we’ve skirted around a few names, but we’ve never solidified an idea. One fault I find is that our camera view is top-down, again, and I mostly hoped to have either a closer or more angled view to better see inside the rooms. We also never had a solid idea of what we wanted for an endgame goal, same with the name we’ve danced around a for a few days. However, we were also able to communicate effectively and create the main idea of the game in a few hours, as well as creating task assignments. Since we were able to get an idea of the game so quickly were able to hash out ideas that would and wouldn’t work. Here are a few of the props I made as well as a couple poses for the characters animations. In order, it goes death animation, Attack animation, Rock 1, Rock 2, Tree 1, and Tree 2:
P.C.C. Team Postmortem
Topanga - For Prototyping and Content Creation we were asked to create a digital game from the physical prototype to the digital prototype. The game we created was an intense, fast-paced shooter game, where the player is a Bird-Human Hybrid who’s the goal is to stop the enemy robots from destroying each levels portal. Our Aesthetic feel of the game was vintage arcade cabinet feel as the player’s view was top-down. Something I found very good about our game is how even though the player has an unlimited amount of ammunition the combination of limited firing direction and movement range, a strategic approach is still very important to winning each level and completing the game. Something I realized that wasn’t up to par on my part of the project was the quality of the animations I completed for the Enemy Robots weren’t as polished or smooth as I would have normally liked them to be. Something I would have changed about the process of the game creation would have been to have more meetings that way myself and the rest of the team kept up to date on the game’s overall progression.
Joenaijah - Creating a repository via GitHub and setting up the unity file with it was the most useful work done and making sure the animations were completed and exported into unity for the designers and developer to work with. All of the levels need to have buildings and lights to cast a sense a nostalgic feel of a bight city during the night. I believe this became unachievable once rendering time was expected was an hour long. I would have created a one-page design of each level to share with my team as a base for other ideas that can be implemented into the game before jumping into the digital prototype. I understood the concept of the game and its character, but the layout was vague and overseen till the alpha test and delivery phase of our production.
Tommy - In this month game prototyping, I did most of the UI part in our game, including main menu, in-game pause menu, setting page, level selection menu, end-game menu and so on. Also, for the UI elements I did, I created all the artworks and scripts. However, there is still something that I didn’t do good enough. The first one is the font, size, space between words. At first, the text of the menu was hard to read. Second is I used too many colors so that it looks a little chaos. Third, I have made a prefab for the in-game UI but there were some errors in it so that it couldn’t adaptive size when others use it. Furthermore, I think if we could add more information in the in-game UI, it would be better, such as a scoring bar, waves bar and so on. For now, we just have a pause button in the game, so player may become confused about the state of play that how many enemies they have defeated, how many waves they have finished and so on, so I think if we can give more information to players when they play the game it’ll be better.
Eduardo - I did the enemy AI
I worked on the navigation of the enemies, which was very challenging.
I would have put more hours into making different types of enemies
Anthony - For Prototyping and Content Creation, we were asked to work on a physical and digital prototype of a game design we came up with. The game that we worked on was a fast-paced, frantic arcade-style shooter. The player had to defend a portal from robots in a futuristic cyberpunk city. What I like about our game is the fact that the player has to move around the area to comfortably defend the portal. The player is forced to move due to the limited shooting directions and the limited movement space as well. What I believe I could have done better on the game was to make more dynamic environments for the robot enemies to navigate, making the game feel more diverse for the player. This would give the players more interesting patterns and strategies to use for the game. If I were to change something about the process of creating the game would have been to give people more defined roles and tasks. There was never a real GDD to follow for everyone to see what they needed to do and when things needed to get done. Having a more structured process would have improved the quality of the game greatly.

I have a few mixed feeling s about how we approached the game. I, personally, kind of wish the assets for the game weren't purchased beforehand that way my self and the other artist may have had a bit more artistic work to provide. I also wish I had been able to do more animations as well as better polished them for the enemy robots. The last thing I would have liked to be different would be to have been to have more time to work on this project to make it the best it could be. A few good things I enjoyed about the game were the sheer quantity of assets and textures, that definitely saved a lot of time, that did come in the asset pack I also enjoyed the aanimationsI was able to create for the time being and once implemented will bring the characters to life, I finally enjoyed creating a level layout as this is the first time that I was able to.
Animations I did:
For some reason, the file won't upload but if you follow this link it'll take you to the youtube video: https://youtu.be/aggNOnk-NaA
Level Layout, may not seem like much but it was quite enjoyable:
Mastery Journal Post: Methods and User Experience
Since my month two class, we’ve been individually researching and discussing topics for the Video Game Industry. The topic I've chosen relates to video games as both an educational tool, mostly relating to surgery, and also as a job training device. If I combined the two it would mostly be a research topic on video game training for almost any type of surgery. The class I’m in currently is called M.E.X.(Methods and User Experience) and as the title suggests mostly teachers on User experience for games and some methods to go about testing them. IN class we had to test a game and get feedback on it. The game my group chose the game called UNO & Friends and we decided to discuss and test the number of microtransactions and what people thought about the added features and changes to the core UNO Gameplay. In the textbooks, we received we learned some interesting facts about the visual and auditory systems in our bodies and why these are important to a video game. Anyway, that's all I can think of off the top of my head so Good Night/Day!
Mastery Journal Threaded Research
I’ve chosen a broad area of research with a more specific and industry related topic. The broad topic of research investigates more depth on how the cognitive process is affected by video games, even including some benefits to the cognitive system. The more specific research topic is how these serious games can be used for job training with minor mentions on corporate job training and touching on how they can be used in the surgical field. Serious games are important to the industry because not only does it open a new branch of revenue and opportunities it also gives companies cost-effective ways to train their employees. Cognitive testing benefits the industry because it can continue validating serious games. The research I’ve done in month four of my program touches minutely on serious games as training/testing for surgeons. The other half of research focus majorly on Cognitive benefits among ages of playing video games.
One thing I would like to do in the future is to test and find as many games that do actual job training and test them out myself. I feel like this topic(s) connects to my capstone because I have chosen to follow through Cellec, serious games, and I feel like this track can provide me a better opportunity and experience with working on serious games. I don’t really have any major career goals that I feel like can be affected from working at Cellec besides teaching me how to better work with other people on projects, small portions of what it takes to work in a studio.
Mastery Journal-PTM
Hi guys!
So it’s been about a month or two since my last post and I’m very excited to continue sharing my journey through this program! In my first class, we had to create a presentation with goals for our future classes. The first goal I had for PTM(Project and Team Management) was to better understand what motivates a team, I feel like I haven't necessarily learned what motivates a team but I have learned that each person on a team is different and each have their own ways of accomplishing tasks or working as a team. My next goal was to better learn about budgets and distribution, I would say that I did learn a lot more on what some things may be worth like the labor of an employee or how much of a budget the equipment costs. My final goal was to better observe my classmates and what niches they may fit into. I feel like I have improved on this largely. It was different this time around since we rejoined another class and had about 10 extra people to learn about. We did personality assessments and played guessing games as to what each of us would be, like an INTP or a DISC profile, which was very interesting and fun.
Anyway, that's all I have, for now, Thank You very much for reading and have an awesome day!
Mastery Tumblr Journal
In the RTD class, I have been able to make new connections with my fellow classmates as well as the people in Cellec. From week one we’ve had the pleasure to work on a game together, which we’ve decided to call Diver Dave. It’s an underwater, puzzle-based game that follows the main character, Dave the sea diver, who is stuck at the bottom of the sea and is trying to get back up. Through working together as a team on the game and through the assignments for our class I feel like its better prepared and informed me on how it and what it takes to work on a team.
One of the books we’ve had to read has helped on understanding more of the dynamics of being on a team. At the end of our degree, we have to do a presentation of sorts of a research topic we work on for several months which relates to, my class, now as we’ve had to do a few papers on articles pertaining to the topic we’ve chosen. What I originally wanted to do was how serious games can train someone, but because of how I worded it lead more to how they can impact and training the cognitive process. I have found a few interesting articles on several tests and experiments that showed how different it can be affected.
Inspirational Quote #3
“ Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.” - Mary Lou Retton
I like to think of myself as an optimistic realist, someone who knows how to differentiate between fantasy and reality but still holds onto the belief that things will be alright as long I believe they will.

Inspirational Quote
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” ― Oscar Wilde
This is actually the first quote I really read. It doesn't really pertain it anything specific except one's self. It made me smile and gave me this really nice feeling in my heart. What I take from this, besides what it obviously states, is that you should be your authentic self because no one else will put out into the world what you do. I found this on a site called “good reads”( link below).

Logo
This is the logo I made for myself. I’ve gone through a few different sites and while a few were quite nice none of them really stuck with me, and some were just expensive. Finally, I just made this in Photoshop and it turned out really nice, in my opinion. I do think I ‘ll change the background though as it doesn't really fit. I didn't really have any inspiration for this, I mostly just played around with the tools, brushes, and fonts and ended up with this.
This my LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is extremely useful for networking with or just researching either companies or the people that work int he companies. It enables you to be able to find a way to contact with professionals in the industry f advice or mentoring and is just an overall amazing way to connect with people and broaden your horizon.
Feedly Resources
This is the second part of my posts for this week. This website is very good for finding out news or articles from all types of websites such as the Nintendo and Naughty Dog Sites I have saved on the left side. From what I browsed through that also have sections for fashion and upcoming tech if I remember correctly.
Papaly Bookmarks
Hi! This is one out of five posts that I need to make this week for my Mastery Journal. This one is for the social Bookmarking site called Papaly. This site allows me to bookmark websites or pages in websites that I feel would aid me in my journey. Although the image is a bit small you can see to the left the bookmarks I have saved so far. I hope to expand on the list as my journey continues.
Inspiration
Inspiration comes in many different forms. Whether it be from watching an amazingly well one movie or just seeing an image and having this like sudden intense urge of “ I want to make that.” Some days it becomes incredibly hard to find inspiration. While this quote doesn't necessarily have anything to do with my field f interests I do feel that whenever I have a bad day I can read it and feel better about myself and get back into the swing of things. “When everything feels like an uphill struggle, think of the view from the top”. The author is unknown.
Forewarning the link in the citation for the image will be very long:

In the Beginning...
Hi! My name is Topanga! I’m a bit new to Tumblr so please bear with me if I make any mistakes. I am currently starting my Master's degree in Game Design at Full Sail University. I had previously attended Full Sail for a bachelor in Computer Animation and felt that to better find the career path for me, I should continue my education. I am interested in becoming a producer so I am hoping research on my own as well as learn about the different types of producer tracks through the course of my program. I would like to learn about the different types of fields and different sections of a pipeline that aren't widely discussed or mentioned. I am a very indecisive person and that is going to prove to be quite difficult since I am learning to be a master in my field. Which usually means that you shud be aspiring to master in one field. I realize that my future can’t be decided for me so I hope to find out what classes resonate with me the most. I am very excited to learn a new set of skills that will not only benefit my resume but also provide me with a wide variety of knowledge that I can enable to find a career in the entertainment industry. While I may not have a specific dream career or one set place that I want to work at, I would find it the greatest honor if I could just be apart f the production of a game or a film or something of the sort that brings at least one person happy. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read my post! I hope you all have a fantastic day, bye-bye!
