So I Just Watched… Star Wars: The Force Awakens // by Disney/Lucasfilm (2015)

If you look for the word “hype” in the dictionary from this date on you will probably find a picture of Star Wars next to it. Whatever I might have though about the marketing of Avengers: Age Of Ultron pales in comparison to the marketing of this film. I don’t live in the USA and it was impossible for me to avoid anything to do with this film. At least once a day for the past 3 months. Disney wants their investment on this franchise to pay off since the buyout and so they have taken the corrects steps to make it work: call back the original cast, bring a beloved director who respects the story and these characters to craft a new chapter in the ongoing saga, hell they even brought back John Williams to compose and direct the score. Did all this effort to please old fans while bringing in a new audience pays off in the end? The answer is “yes” and that’s where the problem is with this film. Read on to catch my meaning.

The premise of this film is quite the ride: a droid carrying a important piece of information key to the resistance has to find his way back home with the help of a lonely girl who lives in a deserted planet. A runaway Stormtrooper who helps escape the best pilot of said resistance tags along the girl to get away as far as he can from the “New Order” an organization born out of the ashes of the old Empire. The strongest enforcer of this organization (a force user with strong ties to the core characters) is following the same piece of information and will not stop at nothing to get what he wants. Conflict ensues and in the end the most powerful weapon of the New Order (a planetoid that can destroy complete systems) is destroyed by the resistance with a lackluster force of ships and a lot of luck. Sounds familiar? it’s because it is. Take a couple of bits out of what I just wrote and you have the plot of the  first “Star Wars” (A New Hope) with a lot of deus ex machina going on to connect classic and new characters. Don’t take me wrong. I enjoyed the movie very much. but as the film advanced I realized that I was looking more at a glorified remake that kind of works as a sequel instead of a bold new chapter of the saga. What does this mean? well this is Disney so they took the safe route of course (while giving the impression of “advancing” the story). Does this make “ The Force Awakens” a bad film? no it doesn’t, it’s Star Wars for a new generation that tries really hard to please the old fans. A kid that has never seen Star Wars will be hooked. Rey and Finn are some of the most solid leading characters I have seen in a long time in the SW universe. Old fans like myself will be happy to see where classic characters have gone and what’s the ultimate fate of some others. All the package is sold with a nice bow-tie with the J.J Abrahams signature that you can either enjoy or hate (I decided to enjoy it despite my harsh words here) My advice?: unplug the brain and take the movie for what it is, enjoy it with the little ones in your family and be on the lookout for the next 2 chapters of this story!
