Ripple’s confusion only grew as the witch magical girl spoke more. What did she mean disappeared? Ripple hadn’t disappeared from anywhere. She was exactly where she was supposed to be. Had this Top Speed somehow gotten her confused with someone else? …No, that was probably unlikely. Ripple doubted there was another magical girl who looked like her running around, much less one with the same name.

She didn’t protest as she was pulled in for a hug, although she still had no idea what was happening. To calm her heart, Ripple reassured herself that her master must have planned for this to happen. That was right. There was no need to be confused or distressed.

“–Snow White?”

Ripple recognised that name. Her master had often spoken about Snow White, the Magical Girl Hunter. She was an ideal magical girl. The ideal magical girl, in fact.

“You know Snow White?”

Top Speed pulled Ripple out of the hug but still clutched onto her shoulders with her hands.  She clutched her maybe a little too tightly, as if she was afraid she’d lose her again if she let go.  “Yes!  Of course I do!  She’s been worried too!  Ripple, where the hell have you been?  We were all worried about you!”

“Absolutely. I don’t think I could say no after seeing you fly around like that. Just…gimme a sec.” Monika took out her phone for a bit as she seemed to be texting someone, but she was actually modifying the code so generic, NPC-like students would spawn within the area inside, and that they would pay no heed to Top Speed’s eccentric appearance. “All set! Shall we?”

As Monika texted Top Speed thought she saw a student walking by one of the windows, but then they suddenly seemed to disappear.  Must’ve been a curtain or something.

“Yeah, let’s do this!”  The two made their way into the school.  It was empty and maybe a bit creepy, but otherwise there didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary so far.  “So Monika what kept you here at school so late?  By the looks of things even the teachers have gone home at this point.  You weren’t planning on getting yourself in any trouble, were you?”  Top Speed teaesed.

This is humiliating, was all Ripple could think as she stood on the street beside her partner.

Today, what they were doing was completely different to their regular magical girl activities. Instead of flying across the sky on Top Speed’s broomstick, jumping across rooftops or walking in the shadows of nearby buildings, they were just stood right out in the open where anyone could see them.

Taking into account the time of year, Top Speed had assured Ripple that no one would think anything weird about them, but Ripple couldn’t help but feel that was unfair. Top Speed’s outfit was ridiculous, but it definitely fit in better with the Halloween theme than Ripple’s did. Even knowing that it was most likely just her paranoia, Ripple was sure that she was getting strange looks from passer’s by.

Still, it wasn’t as if there was really anyone to blame for this. According to Fav it was a magical girl’s duty to watch over trick or treaters. There was nothing to be done about that, and Ripple knew it.

“This is your fault.” …Apparently knowing that didn’t stop her from casting the blame to her partner anyway.

Top Speed had a big smile on her face.  It had been a while since she had been able to walk around in public without feeling self conscious.  Even since her pregnancy she’d been spending less time outside for fear of running into someone she knew and being judged.  And as a magical girl normally she couldn’t just walk around without drawing a ton of attention to herself.  So this was a pleasant change of pace.

Unfortunately her partner didn’t seem to be having as good a time as her.  “Aww lighten up Ripple, it’s halloween!  Not taking advantage of the holiday to walk around as magical girls would be a huge waste.  Besides it’s way easy to keep an eye out for trouble this way.”

Top Speed then reached into her bag and pulled out a pair of candy apple’s she’d prepared for tonight.  “Here, eat this and try to relax a little!”

Ripple didn’t often get confused. This wasn’t because she was particularly intelligent or anything like that- rather, it was just because there wasn’t much that she had to think about. All Ripple had to do was follow her master’s orders. Her master’s will was absolute, Ripple had no reason to question or doubt anything.

However… even she had to admit that this situation was confusing. She was certain that she’d never seen this magical girl before, so how did she know her name?

Ripple flashed her an innocent smile and tilted her head to the side. She didn’t even attempt to hide her true feelings- it was obvious that she had no idea what was happening. “Have we met before?”

When Top Speed had flown down quick as she could upon seeing Ripple after she had been missing for months she wasn’t sure what to expect out of her, but she definitely wasn’t expecting this.  At first she thought it was some sort of bad joke, but the look of confusion in her partner’s eyes confirmed that it wasn’t.

“What are y- It’s me!!  Top Speed!  Ripple where were you!  Snow told me you disappeared and then she been looking for you and nobody’s heard anything from you and-”  Top Speed’s voice got more and more worked up as she continued until eventually she just grabbed Ripple by the arm and pulled her in tight for a hug.  “...I’m just so glad you’re okay...”

Truth be told, Moeka did know a lot about that subject. SERN was actually quite concerned about them; there were quite many, and a lot of them would likely stand in there way at some point in the future. Rounders were often employed to neutralize them while they were in their human form… SERN employed their own magical girls and mages, too, and by their cooperation many Rounders were armed with magically enhanced guns; Moeka was one of those. Hunting a magical girl could quickly become dangerous, after all. She didn’t know why SERN does what it does, or wants whatever it wants but she was in no position to question things. She was little more than a soldier, and asking too much would be a show of disloyalty. FB deserved every bit that she could offer… and even more. Always.

Troublesome?  That wasn’t quite what Tsubome was hoping to here, but she supposed it was to be expected.  Calamity Mary and some of the other magical girls probably didn’t exactly give people a good impression of them.  

“Still  though, you keep hearing rumors about them going around helping people.  Like that White magical girl that’s been going around helping people, or that knight magical girl who saved some kids from being hit by a car, or maybe... that ninja and witch team that’s been flying around the city doing little things to help keep things safe.  Don’t you think that’s real cool of them?”

“Yeah the whole thing sounded pretty silly to me, but that fairy is probably gonna get mad at me if I don’t at least check this place out.  You go to school here right?  Think you could do me a favor and show me around?  Just so I can confirm to him that there’s nothing weird going on here.”

Ripple tried to avoid making eye contact with Top Speed, staring down into her lap, however after a moment she slowly brought her gaze upwards.

It was so strange seeing Top Speed again. Even knowing she wasn’t real, Ripple hadn’t thought she’d ever get to see her again. It felt too good to be true. Like she didn’t deserve to talk to her, even in a dream. Yet… here she was.

“I’ll… try.”

That was as much as Ripple could offer. She would try to take care of herself, even if it was just because she couldn’t afford to get killed while Frederica was still at large. If she could, Ripple would try to return home to N-city. She would try to see Snow White again, to let her old friend decide the punishment she should receive for her crimes.

She couldn’t promise she’d succeed, but she could at least swear that she’d try.

Top Speed’s grip tightened on Ripple’s shoulder for a moment.  She felt so powerless.  Ripple just seemed so lost and she wanted to help her, but in the end this was just a dream.  A dream that was going to end soon.

“…Please.”  Top Speed pulled Ripple in close for a hug.  Even if this was just a dream, she needed to do anything she could for Ripple. She was her partner after all.  “Please, just say you’ll make it back.  Even if you can be brash and stubborn and you get annoyed at me sometimes, you’re also kind and I know you care about others way more than you let on and you always put helping others first and-” Top Speed said, her voice getting more and more emotional as she went on before cutting herself off to pull herself back together upon noticing tears had started streaming down her face onto Ripple’s shoulder.

“…So please, just promise you’ll be okay.”

“Uh…yeah, it’s nice to meet you too….” Monika was surprised. What did she just witness? Was this some kind of irregularity that she overlooked? Nonetheless, she tried to play it off. “I’ll be quite frank and say you’re the strangest thing I’ve seen so far, flying on a broom and all. But I suppose your inquiry of me means that there’s trouble afoot…would you care to share your information with me? I’d more than love to help out with the best of my ability.”

“Haha, that’s fair, but I mean something besides me.”   Top Speed was glad this girl wasn’t too taken aback by an actual witch on a broomstick.  Top Speed pulled out her magical phone to see what Fav had told her about what she was looking for.  “Ehh... Fav told me to look for signs of some ‘immensely powerful being that doesn’t belong in this reality and possibly has the power to tear all of reality apart.’  Not really sure what that means, but he said that whatever it is has something to do with this school.  So... I guess has anything weird happened around here recently?”

Top Speed had been asked by Fav to investigate some strange readings he’d been picking up.  Top Speed flew down towards where Fav said the source of the disturbance was, a normal looking high school.  

Top Speed looked around for anything strange, but couldn’t see anything out of place.  She was about to contact Fav and let her know that she couldn’t find anything, when she noticed a girl near the school gate.  Maybe she knew something.  Top Speed flew down to her, “Heya, nice to meetcha!  Name’s Top Speed, have you happened to notice anything strange around here?”

Top Speed was right. There was nothing anyone could say to change Ripple’s mind now.  Everything had gone too far… Pythie Frederica couldn’t be allowed to hurt anyone else.

Ripple didn’t like being stubborn or set in her ways, not after what being like that had cost her in the past. However, with Frederica it was different. Frederica wasn’t like Swim Swim, and Ripple wasn’t doing this for the sake of revenge. Unlike Swim Swim, Frederica would continue to hurt more and more people. She would never stop unless someone made her.

To protect all of the innocent people that Frederica would target… to prevent her from hurting Snow White anymore… Ripple had to do this.

Ripple frowned and looked away. That wasn’t a promise that she was sure she could make. There were people that she trusted- those who survived the B-city incident and, of course, Snow herself. There were others that she could hypothetically reach out to as well, but…

If Ripple tried to take down Frederica alone and failed, if she tried and got herself hurt or killed, that would be fine, but if she tried with others and got them all killed, she would never be able to forgive herself.

“I don’t… want to lead anyone to their deaths.”

Top Speed put both hands on Ripple’s shoulders and slowly turned her so she was facing her.  She looked Ripple in the eye, she had a gentle smile on her face although her eyes were still a bit red from crying.  She felt like she need to keep smiling for Ripple, she needed to be strong here.

“Ripple, I really wish you didn’t feel like you had to do all this by yourself. But if you feel like this is something you have to do on your own I understand.  You don’t have to drag anyone else into danger, but just at the very least promise me that… promise me…”  She paused, still trying to keep herself together.  She hated how powerless she was right now.  She hated that there was nothing she could do for Ripple right now.  “Just promise me you’ll take care of yourself.  Don’t forget that there are people who need you to come home.  Just promise me that, please.”  Her expression turned serious.  There was a hint of desperation in her last sentence.

  “Fufu~” Star Breaker might’ve realised that Top Speed was reacting to her outburst, but she was blocking that part out. As far as she’s concerned, that didn’t happen. 

   “Hm? Who?” Was that some other magical girl? No, wait, she said ‘he’, so… magical boy? Did those exist? “I dunno who that is, but I never got assigned any mentors. Not that I need it. I’m quite experienced at being a magical girl, you see~”

“Oh really?”  Top Speed responded, not sounding convinced.  She was confused about why she didn’t know Fav, but there’d be time to ask about that later.  She was more interest in seeing if Star Breaker was as experienced as she claimed to be.

“If that’s the case then mind showing me what you can do?  I still have to finish up my patrol.  Care to help me out?  I have some food we can split afterwords as what do you say?”

Moeka felt a little uncomfortable at the question, and made sure to avoid the gaze of the woman. The truth was a rather ugly sort of one; though she was a journalist at one point in time, she had actually been fired not too long after being hired… She was considered “incompetent” at the job, and though that may have been true, the truth was still hurtful. Not that it mattered anyway, though. The job as a journalist was merely a cover for her work as a rounder. It was something that no one else could know about, aside from fellow rounders and her beloved FB. Though she didn’t enjoy it, people who knew too much had to disappear… Not being able to divulge the actual truth, Moeka decided that she needed to make up an answer to give her… [text;] Thank you for the compliment! <3 [text;] These pictures aren’t for an article, but i’ve written some paranormal articles here and there! [text;]I find that sort of thing fascinating~ She had never actually written any articles like that, but that last part wasn’t actually a lie. She did find paranormal phenomena interesting and wouldn’t actually mind doing a little more research on the matter.

Tsubame did notice Moeka shifting uncomfortably when her job was brought up.  She thought about pushing further on it, but thought better of it.  As curious as she was Moeka seemed like the shy type and she didn’t want to scare her off by bringing up something uncomfortable.  Besides there was something else was wanted to ask about anyway.

“You like paranormal stuff? Then have you written anything about those weird magical girl sightings?  There’s a few websites tracking them.  What do you think about them?”  Tsubame was curious about what a non-magical girl thought of there being magical girls in the city, and a paranormal fanatic would probably take the question more seriously than if she asked someone else.

   “I was asking what you did in general, but this works too. Here I thought the broom was just to match your witchy look.” She supposed with a name like ‘Top Speed’, it was only natural to have a power that made her really fast. 

   “Hmm… yeah, let’s see…” She put a hand up to her chin in thought. What would be a cool way to describe her powers? She had plenty of bombs and laser apparati with her, so maybe something like ‘To have many advanced weapons from the future!’. Though, in a way, wasn’t she herself a weapon? “Aha… hahahaha…!” 

   Reika could feel herself suddenly breaking out into laughter at the thought of weapons, much less being one. It slipped out, and she just as quickly snapped back to her senses. She blinked a few times, then started speaking as if nothing had happened. 

   “Oh yeah! ‘To be exceptionally powerful’, that’s my power. Not just physical strength, but strong in a lot of ways. Strength, speed, durability, flexibility… And strong enough to fly too! Which most magical girls can’t, it seems.” Just don’t press her on mental strength. She might start laughing uncontrollably again.

“Uh, neat!  Congrats!”  Top Speed replied, very obviously put off by Star Breaker’s sudden fit of laughter.  Maybe she was just really excited that she got picked to be a magical girl?  Maybe she just really excited about it.  She did only recently become one after all.

A thought occurred to Top Speed.  “By the way, who did Fav assign as your mentor?  Normally he makes a big deal whenever there’s a new magical girl in the chatroom, but for some reason he hasn’t said anything about you yet.”
