Getting Down on Kids Level
It is important to remember to talk with children at their level, so you can see each other face-to-face. Conversations are a personal exchange between two trusted people, and in order to build trust with a child they need to able to read your facial expressions, tone and feel confident when they respond to you. When you are at a child’s level it is much easier to see things from their perspective! #speaking #reading #preschool #childcare #parents #literacy #children #elementary #earlychildhood #education #play #children #teaching #teachers #developmental #behavior #positive #tips #elementary
A big welcome to this week’s It’s Playtime - the perfect place to find play inspiration these school holidays. First visit to It’s Playtime? You will find full instructions on how to…
I’m a research bio-psychologist with a PhD, so I’ve done lots of school. I’m a pretty good problem-solver, in my work and in the rest of my life, but that has little to do with the schooling I’ve had. I studied algebra, trig, calculus and various other maths in school, but I can’t recall ever facing a problem —even in my scientific research — that required those skills. What maths I’ve used was highly specialised and, as with most scientists, I learnt it on the job.
Fantastic article about the importance of play in children’s lives.
Does Preschool Matter?
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/03/does-preschool-matter/
When I hear stories about teachers and administrators making decisions that create the impression they don't know children at all, I speculate about how different things might be if everyone understood child development.
Open Ended Materials
Open ended materials, like building blocks, encourage children to use and develop their imaginations. Counting and sorting blocks with children develops math skills, while building a castle with them support their creativity! Blocks can be transformed into cars, airplanes and people. The learning opportunities are endless when you provide open ended materials, like blocks, for young children! #speaking #reading #preschool #childcare #parents #literacy #children #elementary #earlychildhood #education #play #children #teaching #teachers #developmental #behavior #positive #tips #elementary
