Mall Santa Photo Set Chronicles .... Only in Hollywood
Mall Santa Photo Set Chronicles .... Only in Hollywood
I enter the back room / storage unit/ out of business store/ dressing room and put on my customary black vest and black bow tie. I look like a valet attendant or work at indie theater. Itâs Christmas season, Iâve been working like 60 hours a week, like 10, 11, 12 hours a day and itâs a day 21 for me. I am the photographer at a mall Santa set. But not just any mall, The Beverly Center say it with me, The Beverly Center. They do things different. They are in a class of itâs own. The Santa set or Santa living room. It is the middle of the mall of the bottome or sixth floor as they have it. (Parking is 1-5) where everyone can see can any level. Right next to the Wave Bar, that is also in the middle of mall. The Wave Bar actually opens before Santa and goes late. Santaâs âWorkshopâ is a 8â high to 8â wide, gold couch/chair/ when Santa sits it looks like just got shrunk or doing Gildna Radner impression. On either side are a variety of Christmas trees, Chic trees though in black and white, another is just frosted stick made into a tree, a silver tree and of course, itâs not Christmas with silver wire and diamond tree. The trees were symmetric on either side of the Santa throne. No Santa House, or fence or Santa workshop, we were out in the open, naked and bare. We were the face of the mall this Christmas season at the Beverly Center. After getting my wardrobe, I had to get my camera ready, while my partner, Jason got the cash register ready. Like most mall Santa sets, there is a stationary camera and then the printer is already there and same with cash register. I said before and Iâll say it again, this is the Beverly Center and we are in Hollywood. Here we take photos paparazzi style. Iâm holding the camera at all times, free flowing and able to maneuver around. I am paparazzi. I take the pictures and then I bring the camera over to the guest services which is 20 feet away were he uploads it on the computer and prints it out and deals with the money. Today we have our substitute Santa. Our usual Santa has previously scheduled parties and appearances. 12:00pm and itâs time for Santa to come on out. Jason the goes back to the break room and gets Santa. Iâm out in the open doing my thing, which is talking to everyone like theyâre a child. âMerry Christmas,â as I exclaim in a soft parenting voice talking to a baby and Iâm waving with a big dopey smile. âHappy Holidays,â for all that look like they might not believe in Christmas, because as I learned from the first couple of days. Some people get really really offended if you say Merry Christmas to them and they donât celebrate, almost to the point like I just spit in their face. Seriously they get that angered by it. So I started holiday seasonal profiling. Which is a safe bet. Hardcore white people -Merry Christmas. Mexicans â Merry Christmas, they canât uderstand you they jus nod their heads, except for the daughter who is their little translator. African Americans â itâs Merry Christmas, occasionally you get a reply back, Happy Kwanza. Asian â Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, doesnât really matter they donât really acknowledge back. If you canât tell those 4 races, then itâs Happy Holidays. But in the same big smile soft talking to the child voice, âHappy Holidays.â Santaâs out. His outfit, has some holly on the Santa cap, and looks like Sean Conneryâs second cousin, and he is has a cane. A Santa pimp cane. âHey Santa, Iâm Adrian.â âHello Adrian, you an call me Santa Kris, which is my real name. My last name is KrengelâŚ. Which in Gaelic it means, Kringle. He says with a head nod, âmatter of factly.â He then proceeds to take out his driving liscense, âSee look.â I glance at it and realize itâs going to be a long day. He puts it away. âHappy Holidays,â I say to an older Jewish woman walking by. Santa is standing right next to me so I decide to try to make some small talk, âSo how you doing today?â He sucks in his breath, âooh I was out late last night doing a party as Santa. Ooh let me tell you, the place was a mansion, gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful the meals, the food they had all laid out everything you dream of, lobster, oyster, shrimp, they it was lavished. This was the most well decorated and biggest house that I have worked at and the party. The party was hosted by J.L. and Jessica Smart.â Santa walks to his chair a couple of steps, then leans back to me, ââŚof Smart & Final.â And he does a matter of factly nod. I stay put and keep greeting people. âMerry Christmas, you want to come see Santa? Come see Santa?â as I had direct then to view Santa. The five thugged out Black guys, who were trying to keep a straight face, crack a smile and laugh. âMan, you stupid,â as they keep smiling. âCome see Santa.â Santa, restless from no kids around in line or at the mall, calls me, âAdrian, Adrian,â he motions me over. I head over, âwhatâs up Santa.â âIâve been doing Santa for a good 13 years now and have become very wise learned over the years and these last couple, I realized something and have become a better Santa do you know what it is?â âNope.â âThis cane.â He lifts up the cane. Itâs a clear cane with a gray rubber bottom. On top is a porcelin like figurie of a miniaturized Satna. âMy little Santa.â He pushes it more to my viewing and then pulls it back to elaborate. âBut this is a special Santa because it is made out a crystallized fiber class and when you put your left on⌠it warms your hand up. The reason why it warns you left hand up âŚ. Because it has the most blood going through the hand.â As he shows me his left hand. I turn around to find our first customer and hour after we open. The mom looks like she threw something on out of bed, meaning she look like shit. The dad didnât want to be there and the baby girl was dressed perfectly. âI just want to take a picture of her. Itâs her first Christmas, looking to send this out as a Christmas card. âOk Mom,â Santa says with authority, âListen to me Iâve been doing this for 13 years now and I know how babies. You can tell when there bottom lips pout out that they are going to cry. So what I want you to do it hold your child and sit on my lap with her. âI just want her in the picture.â Santa drops his head down like he is already annoyed by her. He brings it back up. âListen this is what we are going to do. You are going to sit on my lap, and Dad, Dad come on over here and get in the picture . Come on over.â âI donât really want to,â the Dad tries to shrug off. âCome on, get over here,â Mortal Kombat Santa says. The Dad takes off his back pack and sits by Santa. âNow Dad I want you to hold my cane.â The Dad reluctantly holds the cane. And they are all set for pictures. âGuchi, guchi goo,â as I try to get the babies attention and to get her to smile. As I jump around. âBoop, boop, boop.â I rapid fire a couple of pictures as she gives a couple of grins. Santa looks like a deer in head lights. His eyes are wide open complete circles. âOkay I think we got it. If you guys want to come on over here, and you can take a look at the pictures.â As I direct them to the guest services are to see the computer.â But of course they werenât coming because Santa had them in his trance or doing his schtick. ââŚnow what I want you to do Mom, is put your left hand on the little Santa and close your eyes and think of something that you really want this Christmas Season. Do you feel your hand warming up?â âYes, I do.â âThat means youâve been good and it will come true.â The Mom takes her hand off and gives a smile. âOkay, Dad your turn now,â as Santa moves the cane to the Dadâs side and continues to do that to every child and parent, family or whoever is in each group. No matter how big of a line of 3 families that we might have. After talking to my partner at the cash register, everyone was pretty weirded out by it. Whatâs even worse, is how there is the H1N1 virus scare going around and everyone is touching little Santa with out protection. And the parents werenât too happy with Santaâs bug eye look either. We go through a stretch were he doesnât get any visitors. âMerry Christmas, come see Santa? Come see Santa?â âLook like Santa is asleep?â the older tanned out gentleman in Ed Hardy gear says back. I turn around and see Santa with his head down, âSanta, Santa, Santa.â I walk over to him with the eerie thought in my head that always pop in at this type of situation, âSantaâŚâ I reach over and move his shoulder, âSanta?â He pops his head up, âYes.â âSanta, you canât be sleeping.â âI wasnât sleeping, I was just thinking where would be a good place to buy puppet supplies, is there perhaps a store that makes puppets?â âWhat? Santa you canât be sleeping.â âI wasnât, I was thinking.â I walk back to my spot and go back to greeting people. Jason comes over to chat, talking about the latest on the Tiger Woods and how another girl has come out about having an affair with him Santa has gotten from his thrown and steps on right next to me and hears a brief moment of us talking about Tiger. âYou talking about Tiger? See I hate this let his live his life. Leave his private life out of this. This isnât journalism, journalism, died years ago. I used to work with the association press during my day and this saticaltic press is out of control and needs to end. I had a friend die because of this paparazzi style reporting, they did a movie on it called LA Confidential, he was the one the got murder! Because someone lied in their reporting. âSanta! Calm downâ I cut him off as I see kids approaching. The kids say hi, and their parents pull them off to shopping. âSo what do you do, Adrian?â âI do, a little bit of everything, writing, acting, actually right now Iâm shooting my own film.â âSee that is what Iâm talking about,â People like son, who are doing on your own and not letting the studios try to droll out this garbage that they are putting out there with no original ideas. I was just like when I was younger. Me and my 9 buddies each put in a grand and made a movie, we shot it on our own, acted all of it, ended up going to the paramount lot in some small room and editing it. âWe finished the film it was called Vampire Knights and we got an agent to sell. He took it to the foreign market. He came back and he wanted to know what we wanted we wanted out of this. We said, sell it. We got out flat check and our movie ended up being one of the biggest movies in Europe and played for years. It was huge over there.â He pauses for a second widens his eyes and nods and continues. âWell years later a screenwriter over here in America got a hold of it and optioned it, wrote it, ends up being filmed and was release in America. Blockbuster, it was a blockbuster; huge success in America. Well it went over to Europe and it bombed, nothing because Europe had already seen that movie, so it never caught on in Europe, and do you know what this American Blockbuster movie was?â he says, as he begins to walk toward his throne, he stops and turns back towards me. âA little movie, called Lost Boys with Keifer Sutherland and Jason Patric.â He turns back and goes to sit on his chair. Iâm sure there was a short version to say that somewhere, in the archives. âHappy Halloween,â for some reason my mind has been caught up saying Happy Halloween. I have to catch myself. ⌠and Santaâs back. âYou know I have all these ideas of movies in my head. Hundreds of movies ideas, all up here,â he taps his Santa cane to his head. âHow about this for an opening of a movie. We are at this gangâs hideout they are all there. They have the heroine and in walks this hero, butt ass naked. He has his hands up and walks in and the hero says, âDo you guys want to frisk me?â and the gang leader replies, âYouâre naked donât need to.â And he sends one of his guy to go get him. And just as the guy gets there to seize him, the hero reaches behind himself and grabs the gun that is duct taped to his ass cheek and puts the gun to the guys head,â Santa then puts his finger gun to my head and quickly pulls the trigger, âBoom!!â âSanta, cut it out, you can be doing that stuff. Doing gun motions to someoneâs head. Go sit down and stay down. Jeez. What are you thinking? There are kids and parents here.â Santa heads back and sits down. A woman comes in with a kid. âAre you looking to take a picture or just visit?â âIâm going to call the mom to see if she wants a picture.â She calls and the kid is running around back and forth on the couch cushions. Santa is just sitting there, his head down annoyed, wasnât even talking or acknowledging that the kid is there. He breathes in and out, heavily. Another kid comes running in and the two start playing together, must be brothers of the sorts. They bounce and jump around like Chip and Dale. Santa gives a cough and looks up in the same motion. Something snapped in Santa and puts on a two face big old sappy smile and starts chitter chattering and jibber jabbering away with the two kids and he is telling them to come and sit on his lap and talk to him. Tell Santa what you want for Christmas. These two boys are wrestling all around Santa. âHere pull my beard kids, its real. Come here you rascals.â Santa is really hamming it up with a huge smile on and gives them a jolly ole forced Santa fake laugh. âCome on Adrian, letâs take a picture. Letâs take a picture with these 2 great kids.â He pulls them close to him and gives a cartoon eyes and Black Hole Sun, Soundgarden video smile. And the reason why Santa is acting this way, is because the mom came, a little know actress named⌠Sharon Stone. 3 oâclock hits and I am waiting for the camera to be uploaded when I saw a German family start to walk over. I get the camera and head over. The child sits on Santas lap and the mom takes out her camera to take a picture. She takes is and I put my hand right in front of the camera. âSorry maâam no pictures, with your camera. We can take pictures, but you can use your own camera.â âI just want to take a picture.â âI understand that, but this is a business and we donât allow cameras. âI am take a picture it, I wouldâŚâ She goes to take a picture and I put my face in front of the camera and smile (click). She quickly moves the camera to a different position, so I slap my pretty face and smile in front of the camera (click). âMaâam you canât take a picture.â âWhoâs the manager? I want to speak to your manager.â âIâm the manager.â Iâm not. â You can talk to me.â âI want to speak to a higher authority.â âIâm the highest authority, if you want you can talk to that guy over there, but heâll back me up 100%â I point to my boss, at the cash register. She storms over there and starts talking and looks pretty pissed off. She shows him the photos from the pictures she took. He starts to laugh but holds it in. She goes over to Guest services and wants to talk to mall management and want to get it her way. That is not going to be happening because she came by last year and tried to pull this am ca ca mimi bullshit. So she knew the drill. I head over to Santa, âSanta you are done for the day, letâs take you back to your dressing room.â I decide to make an executive so, she canât get her way. Which she still doesnât get because mall management backs us up and is sent home on her way. But even though Santa has gone back to his sled and reindeers, the day is just getting started because now comes, Hunky Santa and the Candy Cane girls!!!!!! You might have seen the billboards and advertisement all over LA and in Las Vegas to NY of the Hunky Santa James, a fitness model and having been on numerous health and fitness products, magazines, calendars. Heâs super ripped out solid and muscular, all of the essentials for being Hunky Santa, which the Beverly Center saw at the auditions. The Candy Cane girls are 4 sexy girls dressing in sexy outfits. Last year they were more dancers, ribbons, twirlers and one on stilts. The mall got a lot of complaints for the Candy Cane girls were too risquĂŠ and erotic on their dances last year. So they kept the sexy and the girls and sent them into the air with aerial acrobatics, using a metal ball, tissues, ropes, and other aerialist equipment. Going 3 stories hight to perform their routines which lasted 10 to 15 minutes with no net in front of the whole mall and above the Wave Bar. While an unfortunate circumstances happen on the second day when one of the Candy Cane girls fell from her apparatus and fell 3 stories to the floor. Luckily she new how to fall and landed correctly, fracturing her hip and wrist. Hunky Santa was first one to help and assist as they waited for the paramedics to get there. She was replaced the next week and safety wires were used for some of the apparatuses. Itâs a fast paced 5 hours of hot steamy rapid fire of photos taken that sadly canât be matched by the 12 photos taken for regular Santa. The show started at 4pm and is rapping up, they take their bows and Hunky Santa and the Candy Cane Girls come over to the Golden Couch, which was made specifically for Hunky Santa. They sit down and a flood of photographs are taken similar to a movie premiere walking down to the red carpet. There days everyone has a camera or a camera phone. Now its okay to take pictures of Hunky Santa by himself but not with him. After the wave of flashes subside the ladies leave and a solid line forms to take pics, mostly filled with older, mature women, milfs, cougars, unhappily married housewives, and gay men. Word has it that there was an article in the Advocate, about Hunky Santa, so ever since then the men have come out to play. Our first customer are 2 older dark hair women who have put on their Sunday best for this photo op. âLadies, ladies, come on into Hunky Santa layer,â I say. âGo ahead put your bags down, relax get comfortable. We are all friends here, letâs enjoy this experience and let our inhabitions, intentions, or want, let you be able to do them in this warm and non critical setting. Just you and the camera, and Hunky Santa.â The ladies are smiling and giggling away, they stand next to him. I bring the camera up and then back down and walk over to the fine felines. âLadies can you do me a favor?â They giggle, âyes.â âItâs just that its not looking right on camera, could you lift up your outside arms. Bring them out in front of you, across your bodies.â The ladies obeying my commands, âNow just keep going until you touch his body. Donât be afraid. You can touch. You see his abs and chest are all cold and he needs you to keep them warm. They both put their hands on his chest and abs. âOh my gosh, are they real?â one of the women exclaims. âTheir implants, nah they are real,â Hunky Santa uses his canned material. âOkay, lean in closer, real close, get cozy with him.â Click. âNice, nice, now kick your leg back.â Click. âPerfect, head over there to the side of guest services, youâll be able to see the photos.â I send them on their way as the next couple of girls come in all smiles and giggling like jr. high girls meeting their crushes. âLook at you two, you gals know what you want, I see it in your eyes. Hey donâtâ be shy.â Both of them unsure of the position, then position their hands on the chest and the abs. Click. âKick your legs back and lean in some more.â Click. I send them on their way and I continue with the rest of the line that takes 30 minutes to get through. Taking pictures of Cougars, teen girls, little babies, men who say they are doing as a joke yet do retakes over and over again. There is also that occasional guy that lingers around but doesnât take a picture with Hunky but brought his own camera. Today there is actually 2 guys, one looks German with a high powered camera and is an Asian man with his cell phone camera. Itâs been a long day especially for Hunky dealing with loads of hands and bodies roaming all over him. Hunky heads in and calls it a night, and the end of Hunky Santa for the Season. We close up shop, putting everything away and of course taking of the bow tie. The next day all is back to normal, as I go to the break room before work to get ready. Our usual Santa is back. I grab my vest and bow tie and put it on. While adjusting it and looking at mirror, something catches my eye. Right next to the mirror is Hunky Santa Outfit.

Chronicles of Santa Photo Shop: Day 11
Chronicles of Santa Photo Shop: Day 11
10:46 I come strolling in to the Santa set. Give my manager Sue a wave and a smile to let her know that I am here. She gives me the keys to Santaâs workshop so I can get my uniform. I am still wearing my white turtleneck and black pants. I havenât washed my shirt once because the red apron that I wear began bleeding onto the shirt on day one. I didnât want to wash and have a pink shirt. I have red streaks down my arms, around my waist and on the turtleneck. Each day it gets redder and redder. Pretty soon I am going to have to turn it inside out for the last couple of days of work. I put my chefâs hat on and adjust it to the right setting. I make the head size bigger than my head and put it on. I rest it on the inside of my ears, so my ears pop out and it sags down past my eyebrows. All that is left is my smile, I open my mouth, have my teeth showing and my tongue sticking out. I am the Dopey of this Santa set especially since I am and 6â3â and lanky. I head back out. Sue tells me to go get Santa. I head over to go get him across the mall, it is a good 10 minute walk. He is in an abandon office. Which is really nice but, Damn! That is a walk. I open the doors and with my joyous Christmas spirit in me and run in there to Santa. âAre you ready, Santa? Ready for a big day, Santa?â I jump up and down. Like it is Christmas morning. Santa made sure on our training day that his name is Santa and that is it. Not Santa Mark or Santa Hansel. Santa. âYeah, whatever get my briefcase.â âOh anything for Santa. You are the boss.â He walks off and heads out not waiting for me. If I didnât leave with him he would have locked me in there. But that is probably Santa just saving his Jolly Christmas spirit for the show. Or maybe it because that I picked him up everyday with all that enthusiasm. Like it is the first time I seen him, each day. 11:00 Our journey across the mall comes to the end, Santa and I arrive at the set. I have noticed that my endurance has gotten a lot better. I am thinking about doing a 10k after Christmas. Santa comes in and waves at all the kids and then goes over to his microphone and grabs his microphone and messes with his Karaoke machine. âWinter Wonderland,â comes on. Santa sings usually two songs before getting started. I of course get two songs worth of dancing. Shake it! Now these are my traditional dance moves, it more of a goofy dance consisting of going with the flow of the music, swaying side to side and pumping my arms back in forth in front of me. I put on smile and dance away. I canât see anything because my hat is so low. It probably would cover my head if my ears werenât holding it up. Every once in awhile I get a peek and can see the crowd of people laughing at me and pointing. It really has become âDueling Banjosâ between Santa and I. The crowd is either watching Santa sing and he does sing very well, or me. I think I am winning because you donât hear with your eyes. 12:28 We have gotten on our way. Santa finished up and kids began coming in for pictures. Manager Sue is on the Cashier. Yes I call her that too. She doesnât like it but I think everything should be official. I am on Camera. Boo Yah! Thatâs right. Eat it Henry. Henry is the 58 year old greeter, who was once a camera man but got demoted because he took too many pictures. He was like taking 50 pictures per person. He was agreeing with the parents too much and he then even persuading parents out of pictures saying it doesnât look good, even though the parents liked it. Which probably why he was taking to many pictures. It would be like this. Mom 1: His eyes are shut there. Henry: Yeah, he is not even looking at the camera. Mom 2: I guess that looks alright. Henry: Nope, she has hair in front of her. Mom 3: My daughter looks ugly in that picture. Henry: Yes she looks ugly. Mom 4: Could we get some of the scenery? Henry: No that is as close as you are going to get? Mom 4: I want to see the decorations, though. Henry: This is the right size, you canât get any closer. (I donât know if Henry knew what he was arguing about there, though.) Since being demoted he has been trying really hard to get back to the camera. He takes the families order and goes to Santa, âSanta, we have Jennifer and Jason. They are getting the Rudolph.â Santa looks at me like, âI donât care. Why is he telling me this.â Henry comes over to me down and hands me the slip, âJennifer and Jason. They are getting the Rudolph. Take the picture.â He puts some attitude behind âtake the picture,â because I took his job. I laugh it off. Then I just ignore him all together because does it every time, with long stares at me every once in a while. Like he was looking at me up and down for a fight. He is 5â4â and brittle, I could take him. But then he stays there while I take the picture to see how it comes out. To make sure it turns out alright. Heâs thinking âif I canât take the pictures, I am at least going to put my two cents in for the parents.â Parents would come to look at the picture along with Henry who is trying to peek in and see. Heâll let them know if he likes. Around the set we call it the âHenry Approval.â We start to get busy and the line begins to come quickly. This is where things get hectic, because I have to deal with taking the pictures, finding out which pictures they want, printing them out, all the while I have to keep the line moving. I take 5 pictures of two sisters and the parents come over and choose which one they want. They then head off towards the line. I needed to find out what they had. âHenry what package did that family have,â I say pointing to the family. âI donât know they never told,â he says to me and then faces them starts flipping out. âYou guys never told me what package you wanted?â He firmly says to them with his arms out looking for an answer from them. âWhat package you want. You got to tell me.â He holds the price list card up, âWhat package do you guys want.â Henry seems a little tense. I get the package name Donner and get the pictures for them. 2:00 I go take Santa back to his room and get his lunch for him. I return to the set to hold the fort down to make sure that nobody causes a raucous. Henry is done with his shift, he puts his apron and hat in his suitcase that he carries. I think he runs away from home everyday. Manager Sue comes up to me, âDo you think you can close, because Janise had to take her son to the hospital?â âYeah.â âGreat, Cheryl is coming in a little bit. I am going home because I am not feeling well.â âAlright.â She leaves. Santa Photo Shop is mine. For 2 minutes, because Cheryl arrives. She is the assistant manger. She is wearing a pink collar shirt along with pink socks. Somebody washed her shirt with whites. Some people come up to find out some information. âWhere is Santa at?â a Mom asks with her kid in the stroller. âHeâs feeding the reign deer,â I whisper to her. She gives me a look like, âCome on.â âReally, Santaâs feeding the reign deer. Right now,â I say even more enthusiastically, like I what holding the biggest secret in the world. With my great big smile. She gives a look like whatever, âWhen will he be done feeding the reign deer?â She asks going along with what I was saying. âOh I donât know, the reign deer are very hungry right nowâŚâ âYou mean Santa?â âNo the reign deer,â I correct her. âThey had to take Santa all the way from the North Pole.â I could see the lady was getting frustrated. âBut if I were to guess, I would say 3 oâclock is good.â The Mom gives me a wicked smile and leaves. Another Mom comes up with her 2 kids, âWhere is Santa at?â âEh, heâs on break. Heâll be back at 3.â The Mom that was just here quickly turns back after hearing my quick answer to this family. I give her a smile and a rubber arm wave. 3:00 Santa is done with his break, Cheryl went and got him. I wait. The line has a couple of families with kids. I stand off to the side of the set waiting for Santa to come. The instant I see him I come running in there yelling to all the kids, âSantaâs here!â To get them riled up. I keep doing it and run in a little circle with the space there is. Santa enters and whispers to me, âGet a hold of your self.â I like to think of it as friendly banter but I think he is serious when he says that everyday. I pretty much ignore what he says and run up to him while he is getting the microphone to sing. âSing âSanta Baby,ââ I say to him in glee. âItâs not on my list.â It isnât on his list of songs that he has written down. âI know but sing it, itâll be funny.â I encourage him. He ignores me and begins singing, âJingle Bell Rock.â I go off to the side and begin dancing. A couple of teenage girls visit Santa, not to take a picture. Oh no $12.95 is too much. They visit though. âWhat do you girls want me to bring you for Christmas?â Santa asks them. âAn X-Box,â a chubby girl answers. âGive me a new cell phone,â answers the oriental girl. âI want you to bring Michael Jackson,â a dark skinned black girl says. âOh I donât think you want him. I donât want to bring him. He will definitely scare my reign deer and I donât want that happening,â Santa gracefully answers. âWell could you try?â âNo I am not even going to. You are going to have to ask for something else. Darling.â Cute. Darling makes it so much better Santa. 4:30 Management staff comes saying that they have 10 boxes for us. Cheryl okays it thinking that they are the cookies that we hand out and they start bringing them over to Santaâs workshop where we can store. I have to stack them in there, so they start placing them next to the door for me. I take one of the boxes and look at it. âWhoa, whoa hold up. Are you sure this is for us?â I said to the staff guy. âYeah.â âThese are cookbooks.â He doesnât know what to say. âWhat are we supposed to do with cookbooks. Hand them out to kids. Do you think 2 year olds are planning what holiday cookies they want to bake? No,â I said to the guy. âYeah thatâll look really good for Santa, âHo ho, here you go there little Timmy. I have a cookbook for you. And one for your baby sister too.ââ âHey man I am just doing my job.â âHold up, one more,â I let him know. âHo ho, sorry kids I donât have any cookies for you but what I do have is a cookbook so you can make your own. Now say thank you to Santa.â A little silence. âWell go get the rest of the boxes. I still have to go take pictures.â He runs off. It turns out it isnât 10 boxes but 12. Those rat bastards. Trying to give us an extra 2 boxes of cookbooks, who do you think we are Emeril Lagasse. 5:00 Santa has to go feed those darn reign deer. I go escort him to his room. While walking over there and cutting through a department store this little kid comes out of nowhere to me. âHelp, someone is dead in the elevator,â he says to me. Now being new to this mall I donât know where anything thing is let alone the elevator. I only know 2 places Santa set and Santaâs room, thatâs it. So I quickly made the decision that I need to help this kid. We were right by a register. I instantly got her attention. âMaâam, this kid told me that there is someone dead in the elevator.â âElevators, yeah we have one. Right over there,â the lady bluntly answers like being asked a hundred times a day. âNo, the kid says that someone is dead in the elevator.â âYes it will take you downstairs.â âLady there is a dead body in the elevator. Call security.â She finally realizes what I am saying and tells the worker next to her and calls security. I quickly run off to catch up with Santa. First priority, Santa. Protect the package. First thing I learned in training. Protect Santa. And I did not want to be the guy who has to come back to the set to let everybody know that I failed my job. Oooh, that would not be pretty. I would definitely not be getting my Christmas bonus. 7:00 Freaks come out at night. After 7 oâclock it gets a little crazy and hectic. People have been shopping all day, they are tired, cranky, and just want to go home. The line is full and people are coming in. I have to do the greeting and the camera. Cheryl does the register. I go and see what photo package they want and then go run back to the camera and take a bunch of pictures to see if the parents like it. âCan you make them smile?â the parents ask me. âIf you donât mind me sticking a candy cane up their ass. That seems to be working the best lately,â is what I want to say. However I go with, âI canât make them smile.â Though I do try to the point of rolling on the ground, making faces, jumping up and down, making weird sounds. If they donât smile in the first couple of seconds then it ainât happening. One parent spent 15 minutes poking at their babyâs cheeks trying to get them to smile. It did not smile. A family comes up and the mother and father want their two daughters picture. I take it and he and his wife love it. They decide to go with the Rudolph package, which is the biggest package. âWait what is this floppy?â he asks me. âI put it on a disk and itâs for desktop and emailing only.â I answer exactly from what it says on the price card. âSo I can print out copies?â âNo itâs only for email and desktop only.â âI can take it and print it out at home.â âNo you canât, email and desktop.â âReally,â he gives an attitude remark like âI Bill Gates, you canât hold meâ âYep.â âHow big is the picture?â âI donât know.â âHow much is the jpeg?â âI donât know?â âDo you know about its pixels?â âSir, I am running out of ways to say âI donât knowââ âI thought you work here?â âYouâre right I do work here, they hired me. I donât own the company and I didnât install the program. All I know is that it is for desktop and emailing only.â âCan I talk to someone who does know about it?â âSure go ahead, you can talk to her,â I point to Cheryl. âBut she doesnât know either. So you wanted the Rudolph package,â I say with my great smile. âYou are going to love it.â âYeah.â âOkay sir, just fall into line there and sheâll help you with the money.â They walk over there. I however off center the picture and print. You donât mess with the Camera Man. A twenty something parents come with their little girl. The dad is this guy who looks like he heard about the hippy revolution and wanted to be a part of it but found out that he missed so decide to do the punk thing. Heâs complex. He has those tribal earrings. They look great on him. His wife is dressed like a conservative whore. Nice. The father is setting the child on Santa. I am waiting next to him to see what package he wants. He finishes up by zipping her jacket a little. âSanta,â said the punk hip father getting Santaâs attention. âCan you piss on me?â Santa eyes quickly look toward mine. We have a conversation with our eyes. âDid you just here that?â âYes I did Santa.â Santa looks back at the father, âWhat?â âCan you piss on me?â âHo ho hoâŚ. Ho ho.â I quickly run back to the camera, âOkay um here we go. Picture time.â A sigh of relief from Santa. I take one picture and say its good and rush Mr. Hippunk and Conservative whore on there way. 8:00 We got through the gauntlet of riff raff and freaks to make it to the end of the day. I escort Santa back to his chambers. I went back to the set for a little âBreak it down now.â Putting away everything. It went smoothly and headed home with the phrase, âSanta, can you piss on me?â in my head.
