I know I've been harshing on Metroid a lot, but I really don't like the newer direction where they try to be as performatively cool as possible. Metroid was cool because it was scary, had otherwordly imagery, and a dense atmosphere. Now Samus finishes boss fights with execution moves in cutscenes and does an Akira slide on a space motorbike. You don't have to hype me up like I'm twelve, c'mon.

I generally agree with that. Aside from the fact that Dread was just in general..cooler than 4… all the posturing and “im a badass and I know it” moments (in Dread) read a lot better to me because by that point in the series Samus is a veteran. It’s her latest mission to date and she reads as someone who is loose and in form. Sure it’s a bit over the top sometimes but it gave shape to a warrior and explorer who at that point had really been there and had done that. I don’t want it to be the default though.

There are definitely things I am enjoying don’t get me wrong but.. why are they so scared of letting me get lost??? Why are they so scared that they have to nudge me towards the way forward when the game isn’t even designed with getting lost in mind??? Why would you tell me to open my map so much!! Why don’t you trust us??? Why does Vi-O-La not have a fucking usable mini map lmao

Why no really good new abilities? Why worse versions of old beams? (Ok they’re actually pretty cool looking and fun to use but why are their names so lame??) why so many missteps????

I am excited of course, my stance on a the bike was that Samus’ suit is the vehicle and that’s more exciting than her having one, but im sure it’ll be cool still. Also not thrilled with the “branding” of psychic powers, we will see execution.
