Cosmic Witch Tip
While doing spells that relate to outer space/the stars, try performing them at night outside! Â By looking at the stars while practicing magic you feel powerful and it will remind you why youâre practicing your craft in the first place. Channel the energy in the stars and let that guide your craft!
Astrology Self-Help
Especially for if you find yourself in stress inducing situations or emotional exhaustion:
1. Really learn about your Moon sign, the basic traits and expression, the house that contains the Moon and any aspects. This will help you find remedies to soothe you particular emotional nature.
2. Think about what is your lacking element (or elements) in your chart, and focus on any external representations of this element. For example:
Lacking Fire- Work up a sweat, exercise, try to stay warm, think about what you desire/where your will takes you.
Lacking Earth- Visit open, green spaces, focus on the practical and the grounded.
Lacking Air- Visit open, maybe even high up spaces, open the windows, try to get some fresh air, focus on your thoughts and where they take you.
Lacking Water- May find comfort from baths/showers, the ocean, try to stay hydrated, try to connect to your spiritual world.
3. Research and delve into the possible dissonance between how you live your world (The Sun) and how you feel your world (The Moon). Work on getting the expression of the Moon through the Sun and smoothly as possible, without self judgement and force.
Personal Shielding
My mother taught me that it was important to shield myself for many reasons:
My personal energy and emotional state can have an effect on those around me.
To keep negative influences out
To keep positive close to myself
To keep other peopleâs energy and emotional states from overwhelming me
And to prevent those who might actively mean me harm the ability to do so psychically.
She resonates most with the element of water and forms her shielding out of it by visualising that she is surrounded by a small bubble of sea water, filled with fish and other sea creatures. It flows around her and absorbs negativity neutralising it. She sees the sea fade, not get weaker but become transparent, so that she can still feel it but is able to see through it and perform magick without having to lower her shield.
Iâm a little over cautious due to some less than pleasant experiences. I have five shields one for each element:
Earth - A stone wall that protects from taking on board other peoples emotional distress
Air - A tornado that disorientates any harmful thoughts or intentions and drags them in
Fire - A blaze that transmutes negative energy into positive
Water - A sea that absorbs this energy.
Spirit - A blue egg of energy that I can easily work magick through and where I store excess energy until I Ground it or give it to someone else.
Before I learned how to make them transparent without weakening them I would strip my first four layers and have only the Spirit shield to work within a circle.Â
Each person picks the shields that work best for them. One of my friends uses quartz. Another uses mirrors to bounce off negativity, but I find this inefficient, and prefer to put any energy sent to me to good use.Â
Just think about what makes you feel secure, and work with it. If it doesnât feel right change to something else. At least once a day visualise your shield to keep them strong. When we feel secure we can forget to shield and although it may become second nature for them to be there it is always a good idea to check them from time to time. Â

what kind of offerings are good for gathering graveyard dirt? Should you leave an offering even if it isn't from an actual grave (just a cemetery)? Should you leave an offering at a crossroads if you take dirt from there? I'm genuinely curious
Letâs start from the end and work backwards here. X3
Firstly, crossroads are different from graveyards and cemeteries in that they might not have spirits that need to be appeased. However, if you choose to leave or take something from a crossroads (such as dirt), leaving a little something is probably a good idea. Hedging oneâs bets is usually wise when it comes to such things (translation: always cover your ass).
Secondly, if you take dirt from anywhere inside the gate of a graveyard or cemetery, whether from a grave or not, it is likely considered consecrated or âhallowedâ ground and thus, itâs a good idea to leave something as a thank-you. There are some unconsecrated burial grounds, such as potterâs fields and possibly some family burial plots (not a good idea to take earth from there unless itâs your own family, since these are usually private property), but most of the public ones you see have been consecrated. If you see a chapel or a church anywhere on the property, it is DEFINITELY consecrated ground. And as graveyards go, the older the grave, the more oomph in the dirt.
Before you go about collecting your graveyard dirt, you may want to make a quick obeisance at the gate. Let the dead know what youâre there to do, that you intend to make payment, and that you mean no harm or disrespect.
If you take dirt from a grave, itâs a good idea to know something about the person whoâs buried there. You donât have to look up their lifeâs story, but itâs good to know who youâre dealing with. Generally, saving the name and dates from the stone will give you something to go on. Some stones will also list professions.
Whatever grave you pick, make sure you ASK PERMISSION FIRST. Call the person by name, ask politely if you may take some earth from their grave, state what you want it for and what youâve brought them in return, and then WAIT. If you donât get a prickly go-away feeling after a minute or so, you should be all right. Manners count for so much when youâre dealing with the dead or with spirits of any kind, especially since taking dirt from a grave is asking for the assistance of the person buried there. As in life, a good first impression can make a big difference.
Thirdly, there are lots of offerings you can leave in exchange for graveyard dirt. Here are some of the most common:
Coins (preferably silver-colored and reasonably shiny)
Bread (any kind will do)
Fruit (apples are preferable, but most any kind will do)
Milk (any kind, and local is nice if you can get it)
Liquor (some spirits may like wine or beer, some may like hard liquor like whiskey; use your best judgement)
Incense (a cone or stick burned graveside; practice fire safety)
Tobacco (especially in the American South)
Flowers or Potted Plant (any kind will do; you can dig a hole and plant the potted item and use the pot to carry the earth away if youâre concerned about strolling off with a baggy of dirt)
If you canât afford anything listed above, you can leave your own saliva. However, if you choose to do this, spit into your palm and lay it gently down on the earth. Spitting directly onto a grave is incredibly disrespectful and will more than likely garner a bad reaction if the occupant takes offense. Also, any bargain where your own bodily fluids get involved is a much more binding one, so be sure that youâre up for that beforehand.
For addition information, raven-conspiracy has an excellent post here detailing how best to approach the gathering of graveyard dirt.
In light of certain recent events, as since this post appears to be going around again, I feel the need to make an addendum.
Cemeteries and graveyards can be considered private property even if they are contained in parks or adjacent to public buildings like churches. As such, if you are found on the grounds after dark, you may be charged with trespassing. If the owners of the grounds take exception to unauthorized digging, you may be charged with vandalism. Always be sure to obey the posted hours of any place you decide to enter, and only ever take a SMALL amount of earth from the premises.
AndâŚI canât believe I need to say this, but apparently I doâŚNEVER EVER EVER dig up the casket, disturb the remains, or (good gods) TAKE THINGS from inside the grave. And that includes items you may see lying about the place. Anything more than a bit of earth makes you a thief and graverobber, and aside from the ethical implications of stealing from the dead, there are serious legal penalties for these things.
For those of you rolling your eyes and saying, âNobody ever does that,â Google âBoneghaziâ or âTumblr witch robs graves.â This is an actual thing that happened, and it makes it that much harder for the rest of us who occasionally work in graveyard.
So please - if youâre going to do this, be respectful of the dead and mindful of the laws of the living.
Witch tip #3
Learning from other witches is a smart way to start out on your path, but donât negate your own intuition for a spell by someone you consider more experienced. Everyone works magick a little differently so donât be afraid to pave your own path :) the most important part of magick is intention and everything else (herbs, candles, incense, crystals, ect.) is just icing on the cake!

Books don't cover everything.
One day I was walking around the city with a friend, and they randomly asked me about a weed growing through the pavement. They wanted to know what âoccult useâ the plant had.
I crouched down and asked it. It gave me a very casual speech about itâs habits and adaptability in an urban setting âI eat the dust that gathers in asphalt and from it I bloom. I spread my children on the tires of cars, and they do the same as me. I subsist on skin cells, spilled drinks, and the precious rain of the gutters.
So I roughly translate: Plant says it survives and thrives. Could show you how to skirt by on nothing, subsist on little, live in urban environments and still keep your connection to the dirt. Maybe even how to better-tolerate living in an apartment complex with noisy assholes. It grows along sidewalks almost ALWAYS. So thereâs something about traffic and movement that applies as well - maybe a good plant for getting your ass out of that roach-hovel on 12th and into better digs on 24th.
My friend looked put-out, and expressed disbelief that I had to âask a plantâ what it did, rather than having read about it somewhere. The idea that the knowledge was ânewâ was unpleasant to her.
I got a little put-out, too. Because 90% of occult books 1: talk about European plants, or Biblical plants. 2: Talk about extremely common, widespread, or culinary plants. They donât often talk about a wild, native, forb from the Mid-South region. You canât buy that plant from Azure Green in bulk. Nobodyâs going to talk about that plant. That random, wild, hardy, native forb isnât something that is opined about in extremely expensive hardcover books, or cited in medieval recipes. Itâs a new and âunknownâ element in European-styled Craft.
Southern Conjure and Rootwork might cover it, but then again⌠might not. It might be one of those plants thatâs too far North, or West to apply to the âDeep Southâ regionâs biodiversity.
Even if they talked about the species, theyâre not going to talk about what THIS plant, and the similar plants in the city can teach you. Theyâre going to talk about elements, planets and general correspondences. Itâs going to be vague, like an astrology report, and softly-worded.
Itâs not going to say âThis plant makes you care a little less that your neighbor is an asshole, because weâre all trying to get by here, goddamnit.â Because that doesnât really sell. Practicality isnât really the order of the day when the book could waffle about the psychic alignment of Lavender (itâs PURPLE after all) or the intense vibrations of the Yemeni Myrrh that had to be trucked out under gunfire.
Take books with a grain of salt. Learn your region. Welcome to a gigantic, new, world of information and witchery that knows your dirt, and knows your people, and knows how to make all of it work with the sun and rain that falls there. Yes, even in the city. Even in the cracks in the pavement.
*(It is/was a âCrotonâ species, Likely a large, mature, One-Seeded Croton. Looking for a âBiological Surveyâ site for your area, preferably with pictures, is just ever-so-goddamn-helpful in getting to know the neighbors.)

can you explain crystal grids to a newbie?
I donât use crystal grids much myself, but Iâll try.Â
It seems like crystal grids are just  crystals being arranged in a certain way / pattern to bring about a certain effect. I am not sure what patterns do what, or if there is a certain technique or a system to the arranging, or if each magic user determines for themselves what will help the energy of the crystals flow most effectively towards the intent.
I have some resources for crystal grids, that I hope can give you more of an explanation than that.
Please note: not all of the resources provided have been read thoroughly by the poster; take any information within these articles with a grain of salt, and use what you find at your own discretion.
