Zoya went full imperialist in KOS and its yikes. Novyi Zem is out here not persecuting anyone and providing aid, Zoya wants to drag people into Ravka's war can we not?

It’s their choice to join her or not. Zoya is out there trying to recruit people for a cause: She wants to help Grisha all over the world and that is the only reason why she went to Novyi Zem in the first place. I think you missed the part about her combing all these other countries too?? Did you not read the following page?? It’s all about a civil rights movement for Grisha, her battle for acceptance, and her battle plan to make it happen. She has a dream and she isn’t afraid to try to make it more than a pleasant fantasy. Zoya Nazyalensky is empowering, not imperialistic. PERIOD.

Part of the issue here @nazyalenskyselenator is that the Eastern countries are the ones with a civil rights issue. Novyi Zem zowa aren't persecuted, they have their own schools. Hell, Tamar and Tolya grew up in Novyi Zem to escape persecution, and the Hringsa network sent people there who weren't of fighting age (which is a whole issue I can't start to get into now).

But in SOC Zoya was shown as recruiting grisha basically on a campus in the Wandering Isle.

If a foreign military agency entered your borders and tried to recruit and radicalize young, healthy, vulnerable teenagers into their fight, that would never be okay. In fact, we see in the news all the time IRL parents begging their children to come back before it's too late.

Also as someone who's grandparents marched in the real civil rights movement I'm kind of appalled at the idea of military exploits being civil rights. That's a colonial and imperial mindset. Grisha don't belong to Ravka, despite being named little gregories.

Fighting and dying in a foreign nation's war isnt empowering, especially when other countries are doing fine and dandy. Ravka needs to solve its internal bigotry problems, not collect more bodies. She doesnt want to help grisha all over the world, her world is very narrow and Ravka centric.

And what does Ravka do in return for Novyi Zem taking all these refugees and being their strongest ally? Break their treaties and sell plans to the Kerch, who will use them take out Zemeni ships.

Okay you're working with half right information here, and surface analysis.

First of all, Nikolai still gave them the plans at the end.

And people only hide their power in countries that are hostile. The Wandering Isle persecutes theirs (Harshaw told us in TGT), and we have evidence of hostilities and / or enslavement in Kerch, Shu, Ravka, and Fjerda. We know that Fjerda isn't hunting in Ravka actively unless its someone they really want (Alina in Shadow and Bone), what makes you think Novyi Zem is the exception?

ZOWA IN NOVYI ZEM DO NOT HAVE TO HIDE THEIR GIFTS. Aditi openly used hers, and frequently. JESPER hid his gift. Because of his own trauma. Colm likely also had his own fears for Jesper, being from the Wandering Isle. If you reread that chapter from CK keeping in mind Jesper is an unreliable narrator you'll get it.

They literally came to ask Jesper if he wanted to go to the school out in the West, Colm said no. And also that he definitely wasnt letting Jesper to to Ravka "to fight and die in some other country's war".

The devil is in the details.

A couple positive thoughts on the Shadow & Bone casting announcement

Jesper is being played by a stage actor! Who seems to transfer well to video! With a really expressive face!

(Stage actors are trained to act with larger, more dynamic gestures than screen actors, and they often have a slightly different tone onscreen, and often tend to pull attention. I like them.)

This is hella important because Jesper needs to be playing two emotions at once in a lot of scenes: the “funny likable guy” facade he puts up, and his real reactions

Anyway based on 30 seconds of scrolling through Kit Young’s Instagram page, I have high hopes for his ability to do this well.

At the very least, he’s definitely going to be fun to watch. Look at how he moves his face!

Alina also seems very expressive! I don’t quite care about her character, but I won’t mind watching her. Maybe the show will finally get me invested in Alina?

Inej’s actor has a passion for stage combat and her instagram has a video of her practicing a knife fight.

This means (unless the director is an utter fool) we are getting real fight scenes. No “knife in hand—> cut to person bleeding.” Inej is going to fight and fight well!

I wasn’t sure about this show but now I’m pumped give me a good knife fight and I’m in.

Now that we have to stan malina I might have to write an incredibly self indulgent national parks au. Hanne and Mal are thé two rangers stationed out in thr middle of no where who have to keep thr tourists from killing each other. They pull the good ranger/bad ranger routine a lot on people trying to fish without permits and litterers. Alina is the trail guide at the main visitor’s center who’s got the unenviable job of instructing city slickers in reading paper maps. 

Kaz and crew are hiking all the way across the park (echoing their super long underdiscussed hiking trip in the book) in order to to gain the element of surprise on Jarl Brum’s military encampment for heist reasons. Hilarity ensues.

I thought about this for a solid 3 hours while out hiking and like. I know where every single major grishaverse character is in this, as well as a) fake vampires and b) serious concerns about climate change. The big issue is not making Hanne or Mal OOC but also there wasn’t much C to begin w esp as they’re so much defined through love interest’s eyes. And I’m taking self indulgent liberties with both because like… high budget fanfic and all, they can give Mal a personality
