How can I play with the idea of being between what is being pointed to and what is being understood?” Performance by: Georgia Begbie Composition: Peter Hinz Townhouse is pleased to invite you to an open studio event featuring artist Georgia Begbie. The event will start by the artist showing a part of the performance she has been working on during her one-month residency at the Townhouse where she started researching how the physical body can express signs, distort space and interpret its own signs, followed by a talk with the artist about her project and her work process over some Ramadan drinks and bites. The open studio sessions are a series of informal meetings that take place at the Townhouse studios. The sessions invite the public to one of our studios where artists in residency discuss their research process and showcase their work to the public. About the artist: Georgia Begbie is a recent graduate of the Fontys School of Arts in Tilburg (Netherlands), where she studied Dance Arts in Context from 2014 to 2018, spending her final year working as an intern dancer with Dutch-based choreographers such as Marina Mascarell, Guilherme Miotto and The100Hands. In August 2018, Georgia moved to Germany where she joined the "La_Trottier Dance Collective" and worked with Canadian choreographer Eric Trottier on their most recent production 1,618033, which premiered in "EinTanzHaus" in Mannheim on November. Currently, she is focusing on creating and developing her own work, which has included this residency at Townhouse for the past month, allowing her to research and explore first ideas for a future performance project. About the program: The Townhouse Residency program aims to provide studio spaces for independent artistic research, experimentation and production, offering 10 newly furnished studios for national and international artists, curators and writers pursuing independent projects.

“Nature! We are encircled and enclasped by her — powerless to depart from her, and powerless to find our way more deeply into her being.  Without invitation and without warning she involves us in the orbit of her dance and drives us onward until we are exhausted and fall from her arm. […] We live in the midst of her, and yet to her, we are alien.  She parleys incessantly with us, and to us, she does not disclose her secret.  We influence her perpetually, and yet we have no power over her.”* Walking against the wind, breathing through the sand, and running to save time. Man is always indulged in his surrounding, capsuled in constant movement. … being a part of it and being out of it, our relationship with nature is dominated by the challenge of ‘to control or to be controlled’ as if the total integration of man and nature is impossible Morgane Erpen explores in this exhibition the relationship between man and nature through material explorations. The artist experiments with different materials to create an immersive experience for the spectator. Arriving in Egypt, she was taken by the sand storms, Reyah El Khamasseen, yellowing the sky of Cairo.  The sand as her main inspiration makes the greatest part of her work in its different shapes. The work presents the contrast she found while searching for the materials in Cairo, between the traditional process of hand blowing glass and the industrial plastic that is very present in various forms in the everyday life. Is manipulating the “material” our way of giving ourselves a sense of authority over what controls us? *Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Ode to Nature.

"اتفضل معانا" يوم الخميس ۲ مايو, الساعة ٤ مساءً #ستوديوهات_تاون_هاوس, الدور الثالث ١٠ شارع #النبراوي متفرع من شارع شامبوليون *العرض الأول يبدأ الساعة الرابعة مساءً ويعاد الساعة السادسة مساءً #تجربة_متعددة_الحواس, #أكل, #رقص, #أداء_مسرحي, #صوت في كل مرة العيلة بتتجمع على الأكل بحس إني في اجازة .. من العادة أننا كنا بنجتمع كل اجازة نهاية اسبوع عشان نفطر مع بعض فول, وطعمية, وبليلة, وبتنجان واحنا بنتفرج على مسلسلات مصرية قديمة.  كل مرة بكون مسافر برة مصر, بيوحشني أكل أمي, بحس إني وحيد وغريب. لما بحس بالغربة والحنين, أكل أمي بيحسسني إني في بيتي خلال أحد برامج التطوع الدولي, شاركت السكن مع أصدقاء من أرمينيا وسردينيا - ايطاليا وألمانيا. اتعودنا أن نطبخ ونأكل سوا. أتولد عندي شعور جديد بالإنتماء مع أصدقائي لما كنت بطبخ أكلات من بلدي الأم (المجر). أننا نجرب أكلات من أماكن مختلفة أشبه بتجربة السفر حول العالم ومشاركة الأكل كانت عملية لخلق بيت جديد لما كنت طفل, أكلتي المفضلة كانت "تچبريز" - سميد حلو مطبوخ مع الحليب والقرفة, بس بطريقة أمي. لما نقلت من بيت أهلي, كل مرة كنت بزورهم فيها, كانت أمي بتنتظرني بسلطانية "تچبريز". للأسف دلوقتي بنسكن في قارات مختلفة وبنتقابل نادرا, لكنها  لسة محتفظة بنفس العادة. لما بشوف أو بسمع أو بشم الأكلة دي, دايما أمي بتيجي في بالي وبفتكر أد ايه مفتقدها أول مرة أسافر برة مصر, كنت في فرنسا لمدة شهرين, آخر أسبوع منهم روحت مارسيليا وست فرنسية كانت عايشة وبتشتغل في مصر قبل كده استضافتني  في بيتها. في اليوم الأول عندها, كنا بنتكلم مع بعض عن الحياة في القاهرة واللي بيربطنا بيها. اكتشفنا ان احنا الاتنين بنحب "الملوخية" وأدركنا انها وحشانا ونفسنا فيها, ودي كانت اللحظة اللي بدأت اتعلم فيها طبخ وجبتي المفضلة. بدأنا ندور على المكونات في مارسيليا, العملية دي خلتني أشوف المدينة بطريقة مختلفة, خلتني أشوف تفاصيل أكتر عمري ما كنت هشوفها في وقت تاني, لكن الأهم كان الرابط و التواصل اللي تتطور بيني وبين الست الفرنسية دي واللي لسة موجود لحد دلوقتي -- "اتفضل معانا" هو أداء يعتمد على عدة حواس مستوحى من المطبخ المصري والمجري ويطرح أسئلة حول عاداتنا الغذائية ومدى استعدادنا لمشاركة الآخرين في طعامنا أداء يقدمه فنانين من مشروع زيجورت وفنانين محليين إدارة المشروع: فاني ناناي, ناريمان أبوالسعود بدعم من: مركز بالاسي في القاهرة؛ تاون هاوس؛ برنامج إمري زولتان للمؤسسة الثقافية الوطنية المجرية؛ مهرجان نسيم الرقص في الإسكندرية؛ مهرجان بلاك في بودابست هذا العرض هو تعاون بين مشروع زيجورات وبرنامج الإقامات الفنية في تاون هاوس \\برنامج الإقامات الفنية\\ يهدف برنامج الإقامات الفنية في التاون هاوس الى توفير استوديوهات تكرس للأبحاث والتجريب والإنتاج الفني المستقل. نقدم ۱۰ استوديوهات مجددة حديثا للفنانين والقيمين والباحثين والكتاب المصريين والأجانب الذين يعملون على مشاريعهم المستقلة \\مشروع زيجورات\\ مشروع زيجورات هو مبادرة جمعية فنية مستقلة متعددة التخصصات مقرها بودابست في المجر وتعد جزءا من عدة شراكات دولية. يعمل عشرة فنانين في مجالات الرقص, المسرح, الموسيقى, الفنون البصرية والرقمية على مشاريع بشكل مستمر مع الشركة. يركز مشروع زيجورات بشكل رئيسي على الأداء الواعي اجتماعيا و الأداء المرتبط بالمواقع لربط أشكال الفنون المختلفة بالاماكن العامة او الخاصة غير التقليدية. في الاعوام الثلاثة الاخيرة, شاركت الشركة في تعاونات دولية مثل: Picture Project (HU, NO), FAR - Fight Against Radicalisation (HU), Performing Arts residency of Visegrad Fund (SK), and presented works for PLACCC festival (HU), Trafó House of Contemporary Arts (HU), European Parliament, Strasbourg - EYE2018 (FR), Art&Tech Days Kosice (SK), White Night (SK), Spotter Trip (A), Valley of Arts (HU), Let me in Performing Arts Festival (DE), L1dance Fest (HU), etc. *يتضمن العرض مشاركة الجمهور في تجربة مجموعة من الأطباق النباتية **الأماكن محدودة والمشاركة بأسبقية الحضور ***سيتم تسجيل العرض بالفيديو ****العرض متاح للمن هم فوق ۱۲ سنة ----- "Would you have dinner with me?" As a tradition we used to gather every weekend .. to have breakfast together fool, beilelah and ta'mya betengan .. watching old Egyptian TV series .. every time I'm abroad I miss my mom's food .. feeling alone and stranger sometimes .. when it comes to home sickness my mom's food makes me feel home During an international volunteer program, I shared a flat with an Armenian, a Sardinian and a German friend. We cooked and ate together. Cooking the food of my own country (Hungary) created a new feeling of belonging. Tasting each other’s food felt like travelling. Sharing was an act of making a new home When I was a child, my favorite food used to be ‘Tejbegríz’ - sweet semolina cooked in milk with cinnamon, but only the way my mother made it. After I moved out from the family house, every time I went home my mother waited me with a bowl of Tejbegríz. Unfortunately, now we live in different continents and meet very rarely, but we still have this habit. When I see, smell or hear about this food always my mother comes into my mind, and I realize how much I miss her The first time I was outside of Egypt, I was in France for 2 month, for the last week I went to Marseilles where I was hosted by a French woman, who used to be living and working in Egypt. On the first day in the house, we had this moment where both of us were talking about life in Cairo and what makes us connected to it. We found out that we both like "Molokhia", at this second we both realized that we miss it and we would like to have it, this is when I started to learn how to cook my favorite dish, we started looking for the ingredients in Marseilles, which made me see the city from a different perspective, see more details that I would not have known, but most importantly the connection that has developed with this French woman, which is still present till now -- “Would you have dinner with me?” is a (Multi)Sensational performance inspired by Egyptian and Hungarian kitchen questioning our habits of eating and willingness of sharing food The performance was created by Hungarian and Egyptian artists. The Townhouse is pleased to invite you to an open studio event featuring visual artist Julian Burkhard. The event will start by a talk with the artist about his practices in our library and then we will join him in his studio to see his most recent works produced during the past seven months he spent as a resident in the Townhouse. The open studio sessions are a series of informal meetings that take place at the Townhouse studios. The sessions invite the public to one of our studios where artists in residency discuss their research process and showcase their work to the public. About the artist: Julian Burkhard was born in 1991 in Bern. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from the University of the Arts Bern. Some of his featured work has been showcased in various group shows: “Kunsthalle Bern” (2016), “Kuehlhaus Berlin” (2017),  “Kunsthaus Langenthal” (2018), and the “Centre PasquArt” (2018). His first solo show took place at “DieDiele” in Zurich in 2017. *About the program: The Townhouse Residency program aims to provide studio spaces for independent artistic research, experimentation and production, offering 10 newly furnished studios for national and international artists, curators and writers pursuing independent projects.

Hussein Basha Al Meamari, Marouf, Qasr an Nile, Downtown, Cairo Christopher Mahon creates new and ambiguous environments when subtly invading an interior by placing his own work within. It is a synchronized choreography of objects that instigates a déjà-vu-like feeling, suggests a memory and evokes a story. Mahon’s pieces are gestures, hidden within a setting, that gently modify the original space and obscurely manipulate the interactions between the objects and the viewer. We're glad to announce the launch of <<#Villa_Champollion>> program in partnership with Institut français d'Égypte.

<<Villa Champollion>> is a 3 month artist residency at #Townhouse, fully funded by the Institut Francais d’Egypte. The residency starts on the 1st of February till the 30th of April 2019.

How to Apply:

Fill out the Application Form, You will be required to upload the following:

Curriculum Vitae

Artist Statement; In one page or less, description of the applicant’s creative work, process, technique, and conceptual development.

Portfolio; A minimum of ten images of your work created within the last five years. All the images must be in one pdf. Please include a list with the image number, title, size, medium, and date of work. If you have video or filmworks, add a link to the work with a screenshot image.

Letter of Intent; In one page or less, a brief description of applicant’s work or project to be completed while in residence and why are you interested in a Residency at Townhouse?

Application Guidelines:

To apply, you must be a French National or a French resident.

Only applications in English will be accepted.

Application submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Only chosen applicants will be contacted directly.

In Taxidermy Dreams, artist Mohamed Monaiseer delves into the parallel worlds of his mind, where animals recount mystical folktales and creatures frolic through an illusory zoo. In the exhibition, taxidermied dolls are choreographed into an uncanny dance that is at first wondrous and then macabre. Innocent toys and stories are thrust into a world of psychological panic in a large-scale multimedia installation comprised of painted tapestries, in situ sculptures, video, and sound.

A continuation of his previous work, “The Storyteller,” Monaiseer draws on historical fables and modern mythological accounts, from Kalila wa Dimna to oral histories and traditional legends. Through his research and ethnographic work, Monaiseer engages with spiritual quests for meaning that date back to the early tenth century. In a marriage of euphoria and horror, Monaiseer conjures play and whimsy, and presents his own fable translated from dreamlike fantasies.

*العربية بالأسفل* Le Cube | Talk by Elisabeth Piskernik & Gabrielle Camuset 10 #Nabrawy Street Off Champollion Street Townhouse, Third Floor, The Studios December 3th, 2018 6:30 PM Join us next Monday at #Townhouse for a talk in English with Elisabeth Piskernik, founder and director, and Gabrielle Camuset, research project and exhibition manager, will present Le Cube – independent art room and several developed projects, in particular the regional research and residence project \\travelling narratives\\. Le Cube – independent art room is a space of exhibition, residence and research that is centered on contemporary artistic practices. Its approach revolves around projects that raise social, cultural and political questions, and proposals that question History and narratives. With this dynamic, Le Cube designs and develops a vast program of exhibitions that link artistic issues to other dimensions of research, in order to carry out a constantly evolving reflection on our environment. A place for analysis and experimentation, Le Cube adopts and supports an approach that allows the artists and audiences to express their reflections and views. //Travelling narratives// is a regional art and research program that aims to encourage interactions between cultural actors in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania and Libya. Through cycles of residencies, exhibitions, screenings, meetings, workshops and conferences, this project aims to cross and connect the micro-stories of North Africa in order to deploy endogenous stories of these territories and to imagine collectively new social and cultural utopias from these alternative narratives. is supported by AFAC - The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, the Goethe-Institut Rabat and the Ministry of Culture of Morocco, and realized in collaboration with Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Les Ateliers Sauvages in Algier, WaraQ art foundation in Tripoli and the Diadie Tabara Camara Cultural Space in Nouakchott. Egyptian artist Marianne Fahmy and Moroccan artist Hanane El Farissi are part of the research residency at Le Cube - independent art room and townhouse. She continued to develop her video project “What things may come” during her stay at Le Cube in Rabat in September 2018. Elisabeth Piskernik is the director of the Cube - independent art room that she founded in 2005 to create a platform for contemporary art in Morocco. Born in Vienna / Austria and graduated in History of Art and Philology of Romance Languages at the University of Vienna, she lives and works in Rabat / Morocco since 2004. She has established several residency and research programs that accompany emerging artists in the design and production of their artwork and exhibition. Since 2005 she organizes many artistic projects in Morocco and other countries, such as the bilateral project "Binatna", the project of residence and research "Attokoussy", "Interspaces", etc. Gabrielle Camuset holds a Master in “Trades and Arts of the Exhibition” at the University of Brittany, as well as a Master of Photography from the National School of Visual Arts La Cambre, Brussels. Since 2015 she is exhibition and research project manager at Le Cube – independent art room in Rabat and in charge of artistic projects, artists’ residences, and communication. She co-curated several projects such as “Attokoussy”, 11e Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale africaine de la photographie, Bamako with the exhibition “Al Amakine, une cartographie des vies invisibles” d’Abdessamad El Montassir. (legend: "Azro N'Tmazert", Mohamed Arejdal, installation, 2012, realised during the summer's lab at Le Cube - independent art room). ++++ المكعب – غرفة الفن المستقلة | لقاء مع إليزابيث بيسكيرنيك وجابرييل كاموسيت ۱۰ #النبراوي, متفرع من شارع شامبليون تاون هاوس, الطابق الثالث, الاستوديو ۳ ديسمبر, ٢٠١٨ السادسة والنصف مساءاً ندعوكم إلى لقاء يوم الإثنين القادم إلى لقاء بالإنجليزية في #التاون_هاوس مع إليزابيث بيسكيرنيك, مؤسسة ومديرة المساحة, وجابرييل كاموسيت, مسؤولة المشاريع والعروض, عن "المكعب – غرفة الفن المستقلة" ومجموعة من المشاريع التي تحدث في المساحة, وبالخصوص عن برنامج البحث والإقامات الفنية \\سرديات الترحال\\. المكعب – غرفة الفن المستقلة نشأ المكعب كمساحة للعرض, للبحث والإقامة الفنية– التي ترتكز على الممارسات الفنية المعاصرة. يدور نهج المساحة على المشاريع التي تبدأ من تساؤل اجتماعي, سياسي وثقافي, وتضع التاريخ والسرديات محل تساؤل. في هذا الإطار, يصمم المكعب ويطور برنامج حافل من المعارض التي تربط المواضيع الفنية مع الأبعاد المتعددة للبحث, حيث يوفر مساحة ديناميكية لنستطيع من خلالها التساؤل عن البيئة المحيطة. كمساحة للتحليل والتجربة, يتبى المكعب ويدعم نهجاً يُمكن الفنان والجمهور من التعبير عن وجهات نظرهم ورؤيتهم. \\سرديات الترحال\\ هو برنامج إقليمي فني وبحثي يهدف إلى تشجيع التفاعل بين الفاعلين الثقافين في المغرب, الجزائر, مصر, موريتانيا وليبيا. من خلال سلسلة من الإقامات, المعارض, العروض, اللقاءات, الورش والمؤتمرات يهدف البرنامج إلى التشبيك والوصل بين القصص الصغيرة من منطقة شمال أفريقيا للترويج لقصص محلية لهذه النطاقات الجغرافية, ودعم التخيل الجمعي في تصور مثالية إجتماعية وثقافية مختلفة من تلك السرديات المغايرة. يدعم هذا البرنامج أفاق- الصندوق العربي للثقافة والفنون, معهد جوتة – الرباط, ووزارة الثقافة المغربية. وبالتعاون مع التاون هاوس في القاهرة, مؤسسة "ليز آتيليرز سوفاج" في الجزائر, مؤسسة "ورقة" الفنية في طرابلس, ومساحة "ديادي تبارا كامارا" الثقافية في نواكشوط. يشارك في البرنامج الفنانة ماريان فهمي من مصر والفنانة حنان الفارسي من المغرب في الإقامة البحثية في المكعب والتاون هاوس. عملت ماريان فهمي على مشروع الفيديو " إلى ما تصبح عليه الأمور" خلال إقامتها في المكعب في الرباط خلال سبتمبر, ٢٠١٨. إليزابيث بيسكيرنيك إليزابيث هي مديرة "مكعب – غرفة الفن المستقلة" انشأتها في العام ٢٠٠٥ كمنصة للفن المعاصر في المغرب. ولدت في فيينا, النمسا وقد درست تاريخ الفن وعلم اللغة في اللغات الرومنسية في جامعة فيينا. وتعيش وتعمل في الرباط, المغرب منذ ٢٠٠٤. عملت إليزابيث على تأسيس العدد من برامج البحث والإقامات والتي صاحبت العديد من الفنانين الناشئين خلال تصميمهم وانتاجهم لأعمالهم الفنية وعرضها. منذ ٢٠٠٥, تنظم إليزابيث عدد من المشاريع الفنية في المغرب ودول أخرى, مثل المشروع الثنائي "بيناتنا", مشروع الإقامة والبحث "أتوكوسي", "انترسبيسيس", وغيرهم. جابرييل كاموسيت تحوز جابرييل ماجستير في "تجارة وفنون المعارض" من جامعة بريتاني, كذلك ماجستير في التصوير من المدرسة الوطنية للفنون البصرية "لا كابري", بروكسل. منذ ٢٠١٥ تعمل جابرييل في منصب "مديرة المعارض وبرامج البحث" في المكعب, في الرباط, وهي مسؤولة أيضاً عن البرامج الفنية, الإقامات الفنية والتواصل. وساهمت في تنسيق العديد من المشاريع مثل "أتوكوسي", وأيضاً المشاركة في النسخة الحادية عشر من "البينالي الأفريقي للتصوير" في باماكو بالمعرض "الأماكن, رسم خريطة للحيوات غير المرئية".

*العربية بالأسفل* \\Call for participants\\  THE LIGHT HOUSE PROJECT | Workshop about Cairo’s Dreams In 2012, the writer Lancelot Hamelin was working on a report on Obama’s presidential (campaign) elections in New Orleans for the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles ; for his article, he asked people about their dreams and nightmares. Thrilled by the experience, he decided to keep investigating—this time with the 2017 French presidential elections in mind. Since 2014, Lancelot has been working with communities in French cities such as Nanterre (Parisian suburbs), Paris, Lyon, Valence, and also in Calais with refugees living in shelters and shacks, collecting their dreams, and in 2016, in Rome where he was a fellow (guest artist) at the Villa Médicis, French Academy in Rome. For this ongoing venture, the book Dreaming under the 3rd Reich by Charlotte Berardt has been a source of inspiration, and Lancelot gave the name The Light House Project to his initiative in reference and as an homage to Charlotte Berardt. Many of the dreams so far have touched upon themes that respond to our current times in uncanny and poetic ways. The Light House Project is also a collaboration with the actor and director Duncan Evennou. They decided to create a network of people where every dreamer shares his or her dream across languages and national borders. The project is similar to traditions of storytelling: sharing myths, fears, and joys together. 4 DAYS WORKSHOP (2-5 December) with actor and director Duncan Evennou, Writer Lancelot Hamelin and Designer Benoit Verjat. Participants are introduced to a series of sessions where they will be given the opportunity to create an archive of dreams in the city of Cairo. Working from interviews conducted by the group, the aim is to go through the different steps of creation ( Investigate, write, edit, digitalize and perform) in a radiophonic and publishing set. This will be the final day of Imane’s exhibition. Imane Ibrahim is an Egyptian visual artist and portraitist, and academic researcher. Her interests focus on research around colorful depictions and paintings, and that which she writes about in the Arabic language. عرض أدآئي | سردية حامد ترويها منيرة تاون هاوس – جاليري, الدور الأول ٢٨ نوفمبر, ٢٠١٨ السابعة مساءاً [اختار المدخل الخلفي من البناية لاخرج منه، هناك الشارع امامى ممتداً يوصلني في إختصار للمكان المتفق عليه. اسير وحدي احفظ يداي الباردتان داخل ثنايا معطفي المفضل. لم أتردد ان ارتديه اليوم على الرغم من احتفاظي به دوما للمقابلات الهامة، تذكرت ألا ابخل على نفسي بمتعة ارتداءه، فهو يمدنى بشعور حسن دوماً، حتى ولو قليلاً يفعل هو الآن على اى حال. ينتهى الشارع لأنعطف يساراً، الطريق سريع على الجانبين وفوقه الجسر. اسير قليلاً ثم أقف، اراها هناك من مكاني فتتقاطع الرؤية بين سكونها وبين السيارات المتعجلة. فيلا من طابقين جميلة الهيئة تتزين بسور ثلثيه حائط من الطوب والباقي اسياخ حديدية مدببة. يوجد مدخل لهذا السور، بوابته حديدية، لكنه مغلق بسلسلة وقفل كبير. من مكاني آراها وارى مدخلها وطوابقها، المغلقة أيضا. ارى انها فقدت الابواب، فلا باب لمدخل الفيلا ولا ابواب لنوافذها ذات الأقواس، لكننى اتبين انها مغلقة. اعبر في تروى، السيارات مسرعة في الاتجاهين، اقترب منها لتتضح الرؤية. يوجد ما يغلق منافذ تلك الفيلا، انها مغلقة بحوائط من الطوب بدلاً من الابواب. لقد انقبضت نفسي! اعبر واسير قليلاً، الطريق ممهد فأنعطف يميناً. ها قد وصلت.] تختتم إيمان إبراهيم معرضها في التاون هاوس جاليري بعرض أدائي لنص "السردية الأخيرة: سردية حامد ترويها منيرة" وهو حَكي خيالي لرحلة حميمية. إيمان إبراهيم، فنانة بصريّة/مصوّرة مصريّة وباحثة أكاديميّة. إهتماماتها تتركز في البحث حول التصوير/الرسم الملّون وما يٌكتّب عنه (باللغة العربية وخاصة في مصر). ايضًا تهتم بتتبع تمثيلات النوع الإجتماعي/الجندر في الفن المصري المعاصر. استمارة تسجيل الحضور: https://goo.gl/forms/Jf7daz6wZtsfvQa42

The Boda Boda Lounge is a two-day cross-continental project taking place simultaneously in different spaces across Africa. “Boda boda” is an adaptation of the word for border, alluding to a cross-border movement and suggesting physical mobility across lines that divide land and space. This year’s edition titled Soft Pow(ers) is conceptualised by artist Euridice Zaituna Kala. Artists are invited to respond to Édouard Glissant’s notion of Tout Monde (all the world): to deepen and complicate the links amongst the complex African worlds that go beyond the inherited Anglo, Luso and Franco worlds, to creolise rather than hybridise, and to compose a new language within these parameters – that Tout Monde identity, that soft pow(er), that is at times operating covertly. This is a call to reflect on identity not as a single strand or a single truth but one that has been shaped and reshaped by different encounters, resulting in a dynamic identity that is not bound by place especially in this moment where technology temporarily flattens space.
