i'm going to say something potentially controversial

i have been part of the queer community for 14 years, have studied sexuality and gender presentations from a variety of cultures and subcultures, have updated myself on terms and codes and in-group norms, and have tried to look at things with as much nuance as i possibly can

and i have NEVER come across a functional definition of the term "tenderqueer" that didn't just amount to "queers i personally don't like".

some people claim it refers to mostly over-sensitive white queers who haven't unpacked their racism (a group that definitely exists, btw), others use it to mean those who play with their gender and presentation in a way that is flamboyant, flashy, and sometimes assumed to be performative (i literally don't understand the problem here), and still others use it to mean queer people who levy their identity as a get-out-of-jail-free-card to dodge accountability when they cause harm (absolutely a fucking problem)

there are certainly other working definitions, and i won't say that people behaving in the ways of the first and last definitions shouldn't be criticized,

but as a term, it is functionally useless. it does not refer to any coherent enough concept such that anyone can actually tell who or what you're criticizing.

i've even seen some people use "tenderqueer" to refer to people who don't believe you need dysphoria to be trans, which is an objectively correct belief!

look. i know it is so so fucking tempting to come up with a way to laterally (or sometimes not so laterally) insult people from your own community, especially one so big and varied as the queer community. but for the love of fuck, when you toss around this imprecise term, it begins to sound like a dogwhistle. it begins to sound like an invitation to fill-in-the-blank with whatever type of queer person personally grinds your gears, whether it's a warranted feeling or not.

the issue is not criticizing types of people who need to have their poor behavior criticized--the issue is using an imprecise term that could very easily invite alignment with people who think you and your friends shouldn't exist. you think you're complaining about over-sensitive white queers who for some fucking reason still haven't figured out how to not be racist at every single person of the global majority that they meet in queer spaces--a VERY REAL ISSUE!--and Transmed Intersex-Hating Harvey over there thinks you're on the same page about policing self-expression.
