In doing so, he condemned himself to an eternity of captivity, bound to his patron by the contract drawn from his blood and the flowers blooming from his bones each spring. Now, enslaved in all but name, he must serve both the whims of his lord and the treacherous machinations spun by fae queens and human sovereigns alike.

Autumn arrives on wings of crimson and gold, and the world goes lush with dying. The stars are changing with the advent of the new age, emerging from their slumber for the first time since the Storm, and Alejandro is quite possibly the only one who can stop it.

Antagonist-Centered Plot Twist Ideas

The antagonist unexpectedly does something to help the MC. What is their true motivation?

The antagonist realized that they have been manipulated by a greater evil this whole time.

The antagonist is revealed to actually be a pretty likable, empathetic character.  Even more so than the MC…

The antagonist falls in love with a minor protagonist.

The antagonist has been helping the MC the entire time, although their ‘help’ did seem a lot like villainous behavior.

The antagonist has been secretly helping the MC, while acting harmful to be spared from a greater evil.  (a prince pretends he wants to banish all the Rebels to satisfy his tyrant father, all the while helping the Rebels behind the scenes).

The antagonist meets the hero.  Neither of them know who the other is.

The antagonist has never existed in the first place.

The antagonist has been a figment of the hero’s imagination this whole time.

The antagonist is trying to help, but fails miserably at being good.

🫁 Lung injuries

LUNGGGGGSSSS. They are seriously some of my favourite whump related injuries to write!

I started researching lung injuries as a teen (before I ever knew I was into whump), and I have so much useless information relating to the subject. So here is whatever I remember. Because more Whumpees deserve lung damage.

They're a class of injury that is not just hell to endure, but also to watch someone else go through. So Caretaker can also suffer in proxy.

A Whumpee might have to gurgle their words past the blood that’s coming up from their lungs, desperately pull air into a lung that won’t inflate because it has collapsed, or start losing coherence and coordination due to oxygen deprivation.

Other lung injury details:

Cyanosis (lips, tongue and fingertips turning blue)

Pale skin that is cool and clammy to the touch

Air hunger (a special kind of living hell)

Coughing, choking, rattling breath

Fragmented speech, or even the inability to speak entirely because they can’t afford the air. Not being able to project their voice, having to speak in a wheeze

Blood or bloody froth appearing at the mouth and nose, especially when Whumpee is trying to breathe through blood

Confusion, fatigue, irritability, compromised mental function

Lack of coordination, fumbling fingers, tripping over things, bumping into furniture

Oxygen deprivation can cause seizures, unconsciousness, brain damage, coma, and death of course

AND if you want, Whumpee can also go out quietly, without anyone knowing. Passing out or dying from oxygen deprivation can be silent and unexpected (See "old man's best friend" >> pneumonia providing a gentle end to old or very sick individuals without visible pain or struggle)

Some dramatic lung injury interventions:

For hemothorax (blood in the lungs): having to drain the blood collected in the lung so the person can breathe

For pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity, compressing the lung): releasing the air so it stops squashing the lung

And there are SO MANY ways to get lung injuries:

Penetrative trauma: gunshot, stab wound, shrapnel, broken rib puncturing lung

Blunt force trauma: getting beat up, being hit by a car, fall related injuries

Illness: asthma, influenza, infection, pneumonia, COVID, sepsis, etc

Inhalation: inhaled toxins / irritants / smoke

Drowning: also see secondary drowning, where it happens outside of water

This is not exhaustive! Also, I am not in the medical industry, so take everything with a grain of salt and do your own research!

I was inspired to share this because I just wrote a fic where not one, but TWO Whumpees got lung injuries! TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! I finally got to use all my lung trivia! 🫁

How to Fix Underwriting

1. Slow down at emotionally important moments.

Big emotions need space to land. If a scene feels rushed, pause the plot briefly to show how the moment affects the character.

2. Add reactions, not explanations.

Instead of explaining what a character feels, show it through physical responses, hesitation, or small actions that reveal emotion naturally.

3. Ground every scene in the senses.

If a scene feels thin, add one or two sensory details—sound, texture, smell, or temperature—to make the moment feel lived-in.

4. Let thoughts interrupt action.

A line of internal thought can deepen a scene without slowing it too much. Thoughts show stakes, fear, longing, or conflict beneath the action.

5. Expand consequences, not events.

You don’t need more things to happen—you need to show what matters. Focus on how events change relationships, decisions, or self-perception.

6. Strengthen setting where emotion peaks.

The environment should echo or contrast the emotion of the scene. Setting is not decoration—it’s emotional reinforcement.

7. Add specific details instead of general ones.

Underwriting often relies on vague language. Swap “they argued” for one sharp line of dialogue or a specific breaking point.

8. Let dialogue breathe.

Short dialogue exchanges without pauses can feel flat. Add beats—silence, gestures, interruptions—to give the conversation weight.

9. Show transitions between scenes.

If scenes jump too quickly, readers feel disoriented. A brief transition helps establish time, mood, and emotional continuity.

10. Clarify stakes early in the scene.

If readers don’t know what can be lost, scenes feel empty. Make sure the character wants something specific and fears losing it.

11. Use the “what are they feeling right now?” check.

After each major beat, ask what emotion is dominant in that moment. If it’s missing on the page, the scene is likely underwritten.

12. Expand scenes that feel “too clean.”

If a scene resolves too neatly or quickly, it probably needs more tension. Messy emotions and unresolved feelings add depth.

Being uncomfortable with femininity being pushed onto you does not make you misogynistic. not wanting to be feminine does not make you misogynistic. rejecting feminine qualities does not make you a pick-me. embracing traditionally masculine things does not automatically mean you’re embracing toxic masculinity. wanting to be a man does not mean you want to “benefit from the patriarchy.” Anyone who implies or tells you these points is acting in bad faith.

I see so many people shaming/belittling transmascs and trans men for their transition (including other transmascs/trans men who are ashamed of themselves), and it sucks. You’re allowed to be masculine. You’re allowed to be a man. You’re allowed to dislike being a woman. You’re not a bad person for doing so. Men aren’t “the enemy” and you aren’t evil for wanting to become one, or wanting to become attached to manhood in any way/shape/form. If I had internalized this earlier, I think I would’ve understood myself a lot sooner

This is so real though. Every time I see (honestly it's not often but even so) a callout because a fic author was using generative AI and their disappearance/deletion of their work is considered proof without an actual statement from the author I feel so sad. Because on the one hand, yes, I personally condemn the use of AI and think it's very sad that people would be so insecure over the quality of their writing that they would use a machine to tell a story, instead of telling a story that might not be as good as they hoped. Yes, I don't want to spend my limited reading time reading AI-produced fic.

But on the other hand. What if the deletion of the work was not a sign of guilt. What if that author simply liked the generic plot romances or whatever used. What if they are laid up in bed for whatever reason with nothing to do but write 20k words of fic in a week. What if they actually wrote all of that, and they deleted their fic not because they were guilty but because they were hurt by the accusations and then everyone just believing it of them

Because honestly, if I have to choose between accidentally reading fic written by AI and authors getting driven off the internet because they were accused of using AI when they didn't... I think I'm going to choose accidentally reading AI every time.

And it sucks, it sucks so much that it's hard to be sure! I hate the way I occasionally question if something was made by a person! It sucks. But I don't know what the solution is, either

no but whumper smashing whumpee knee with a hammer, crowbar, or anything else, to the point that all the bones break, the ligaments tear and everything. and it's so many consequences because:

whumpee won't be able to put any weight on their leg, so they can't run away even if they try (they could crawl, but with the pain it would be very hard) and they would have to be rescued

the pain is inmensurable, like, to the point that whumpee may pass out or get very close to it (not seeing anything, feeling like there's cotton in their ears)

it will get a reaction even from the most stoic of whumpees

the recovery is very long, in "real world" universes it will involve surgery, whumpee would go through months of physical therapy and the knee will never be the same again
