all bark, no bite.
This piece was initially posted as a WIP two months ago on Twitter to field feedback. It was meant to communicate what I felt was the sanitization of furry spaces and the othering of our peers. While most of the comments were positive, I was accused of arguing for public displays of kink despite the piece being a commentary on how pups cannot exist in much of any furry spaces without their presence immediately inciting discourse about their perceived deviancy regardless of their stance on the typical “can I wear hoods in public?” discourse.
Regardless of your opinions of whether or not pup hoods should be worn in public, ( my response is that it’s a nuanced situation, particularly when the modern fursuit has roots in kink and many conventions want to accommodate both adults and minors when both parties deserve their own dedicated spaces. ) you cannot argue that pups aren't routinely othered in our spaces. I have seen relatively adjusted conversations devolve into name-calling, with many arguments attacking the appearance of pups. Even if you were “one of the good ones,” how would you feel if you saw your friends calling people who express themselves like you ugly, creepy, or disgusting?
This piece is ultimately about othering, judgment, and standing out in a crowd of like-minded peers for the crime of aligning with an identity that is tied to so much discourse. I intentionally chose a restricted color palette to portray rigidity, yes, but also to show that furries and pups are very often seen as one in the same by outside observers — the eyes of the fursuiters echo the color of the pup’s mask, but both parties are so swept up in spectacle that they cannot see their similarities. “All bark, no bite” is two-fold, speaking to the trend I often observe where furries get so swept up in discourse that means little offline and my personal experiences with pups as regular members of our community that I choose to judge as individuals first and foremost.
