And now it's real.
Just 23 months after GM CEO Mary Barra unveiled the Chevrolet Bolt concept at the Detroit Auto Show, the very first production versions of Chevy's 238-mile electric car to be sold were delivered this morning to eager San Francisco Bay Area buyers.
The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV will be sold first in California and Oregon, and then roll out to selected dealers throughout the rest of the U.S. over the next six months.
DON'T MISS: Chevrolet Bolt EV: Green Car Reports' Best Car To Buy 2017
The first sales took place 20 years and a few days after the first 40 GM EV1s were delivered to California lessees in 1996, though Chevrolet chose not to acknowledge the anniversary.
But the Bolt EV buyers are every bit as avid as their counterparts two decades earlier.
Green Car Reports spoke briefly with one of three initial buyers identified by Chevrolet before the announcement.
2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV
Software developer Bobby Edmonds, of Castro Valley, is replacing his current BMW i3 battery-electric car with a new leased Bolt EV.
Growing up in Georgia, he recalled, green cars were the furthest thing from his mind: "It was mostly trucks and SUVs," he said, noting that he'd actually owned an original Hummer H1 in the past.
Moving to California got him interested in more advanced-technology cars, Edmonds said. After a lot of research, the BMW i3 was the first one he was willing to buy and be seen in that felt like a finished, completed, usable vehicle. "It wasn't in beta," he said.

He admitted the Nissan Leaf had been his second choice, and was "a good runner-up"—but he just couldn't get past the way it looked. It was "just too ugly" for him, he said.
Of course, he added, "everyone wants a Tesla," but with a family of four, that just wasn't in the budget.
He likes his i3, but he expects the Bolt EV will solve the two major drawbacks he's run into while using the i3 as his daily driver.
First is the battery range. At 81 miles, he said, a round-trip from his home to the San Francisco Airport is right at the limit. "I like to put my foot in it," he acknowledged.
At speed, he said, the i3 only delivers 55 to 60 miles of range—and the trip is 30 miles one way. He's not fond of having to stick to speeds of 55 or 60 mph and using the car's maximum-economy setting, which slows acceleration.
Second is the limit of four seats. With four in his family, Edmonds occasionally needs to take a fifth person along on a trip—his father or a friend—and that's just not possible in the i3, while it will be in his Bolt EV.

Edmonds said that while he'd bought the i3 because of its advanced technology, leasing the electric BMW had several unexpected major benefits.
First, he changed his electricity plan to a nighttime EV-charging rate, and moved a major portion of electric usage to the wee hours, including washing machines and other appliances.
To his surprise, he said, that is saving him hundreds of dollars a month.

Audi Sport is set to double its range of high-performance, RS-badged vehicles, reports Autocar. In an interview, Stephan Winkelmann, head of Audi Sport, revealed plans to add eight RS models to its lineup by early 2018. Winkelmann didn't reveal which vehicles would get the RS treatment, but said that "it is better to under-promise and over-deliver." Audi has several RS-badged cars, including the RS7, RS6 Avant, TT RS (both in its hard-top and soft-top variant), RS Q3, and RS3 (some of which are sold in the US). Autocar believes that the A1, A4, and Q5, along with the R8 are next in line to get the RS treatment in some markets. With Mercedes-AMG selling more vehicles, 80,000 units over the past few years, according to Autocar, it makes sense for Audi Sport to follow closely behind with a similar idea. While Mercedes is placing the AMG badge on its vehicles to bridge the gap between its high-performance and lower end models, Audi Sport says it's taking a different tactic. "We are not going to do what they do," Winkelmann said. Even without the extra vehicles, Audi RS sales could top 20,000 units this year, reports Autocar, with Winkelmann stating that the brand would experience "double-digit growth this year." Hopefully, Audi Sport's decision to add more RS models will result in some of those high-performance cars coming to the US.
Another recall this time is BMW
BMW is recalling more than 154,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. and Canada to fix a wiring problem that can cause engines to stall.
The recall covers certain 5-Series and X5 models and some 6-Series and X6 vehicles from the 2007 to 2012 model years.
The company says in documents filed with U.S. safety regulators that wiring to fuel pumps inside the gas tank may not have been properly crimped. That can cause the wires to come loose and melt a connector, causing a gas leak. That can stop the fuel pump from working and make engines stall.
BMW says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries due to the problem.
Consumer Reports annual Car Reliability Survey is out, and yes, there are some big surprises. First and foremost? The venerable publication no longer recommends the Honda Civic. In fact, aside from the walking-dead CR-Z and limited-release Clarity fuel-cell car, the Civic is the only Honda to miss out on CR's prestigious nod. At the opposite end there's a surprise as well – Toyota and Lexus remain the most reliable brands on the market, but Buick cracked the top three. That's up from seventh last year, and the first time for an American brand to stand on the Consumer Reports podium. Mazda's entire lineup earned Recommended checks as well. Consumer Reports dinged the Civic for its "infuriating" touch-screen radio, lack of driver lumbar adjustability, the limited selection of cars on dealer lots fitted with Honda's popular Sensing system, and the company's decision to offer LaneWatch instead of a full-tilt blind-spot monitoring system. Its score? A lowly 58. The Civic isn't the only surprise drop from CR's Recommended ranks. The Audi A3, Ford F-150, Subaru WRX/STI, and Volkswagen Jetta, GTI, and Passat all lost the Consumer Reports' checkmark. On the flipside, a number of popular vehicles graduated to the Recommended ranks, including the BMW X5, Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, and Cruze, Hyundai Santa Fe, Porsche Macan, and Tesla Model S. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the hilariously recall-prone Ford Escape getting a Recommended check – considering the popularity of Ford's small crossover, this is likely a coup for the brand, as it puts the Escape on a level playing field with the Recommended Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. While Ford is probably happy to see CR promote the Escape, the list wasn't as kind for every brand. For example, of the entire Fiat Chrysler Automobiles catalog, the ancient Chrysler 300 was the only car to score a check – there wasn't a single Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, or Ram on the list. That hurts. FCA isn't alone at the low end, either. GMC, Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, and Mitsubishi don't have a vehicle on CR's list between them, while brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Cadillac only have a few models each.
The only thing that's climbed faster than the cost of college tuition is the price of the Nissan GT-R. When the first R35 GT-R made its US debut at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, it carried a price of $69,850. In our report, we called it a "huge performance bargain." Now, Godzilla's hottest variant, the 2017 GT-R Nismo, officially costs $100,000 more than the original R35. Yes, the 2017 Nissan GT-R Nismo costs $176,585, including $1,595 in destination charges. And while that figure might seem exorbitant, it's only about $10,000 more than last year's GT-R Nismo, a mere smidgen in the world of six-figure supercars. And unlike the $188,100 Porsche 911 Turbo S, Nissan's price is almost a case of what you see is what you get – paint is the only available option, with Super Silver carrying a $3,000 price tag and Pearl White demanding an extra $1,000. We doubt you'll ever find a 911 Turbo S for its base price.
Ferrari continues to turbocharge its lineup with the latest addition – the GTC4Lusso T. This car has the same body as the four-seat GTC4Lusso, but features a turbocharged V8 and sends power only to the rear wheels, a recipe that might just make the gorgeous, elongated hatchback even better to drive.
Here's more proof BMW is working on a super-secret 8 Series
It's been close to 20 years since BMW produced the 8 Series, and since then rumors have persisted that the company was planning a replacement for the full-sized luxury coupe. We've seen concepts that possibly point to a new one, but the automaker has killed any talk of a future version. Based on these spy shots though, it seems the company is quietly working away. The new 8 Series will be based on the 7 Series sedan, much like the 6 and 5 series are related. The new car is set to compete against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe. It's not clear which of BMW's turbocharged engines will power the new car, but BMW trademarked a number of model names, including M850 and M8. Because it's BMW, we can expect a convertible and a four-door 8 Series Gran Coupe to be on the table. The photos show a car covered in typical test-vehicle camouflage, though BMW traits like the grille show through. The long roofline flows back, but not quite as far back as something like the 7 Series-based Rolls Royce Wraith. The car appears to have some semblance of a backseat, but it's difficult to tell how much room rear occupants will be afforded. Around back, the camouflage does a good job of keeping details scarce. The taillights appear to be temporary testing units. The exhaust tips have a similar shape to the current 7 Series. This test mule was photographed in a lot before road testing, so it's unclear how far along in development the vehicle currently sits. Although BMW has been quiet on the subject of a new 8 Series, expect an official announcement sometime in the next few months.
