will leans back against the bricks of the building while lighting up his cigarette. “ mm. “ nods until he takes the bud from between his lips. “ night shift is a mood killer sometimes, huh ? “ one that he knew of all too well. it’s never really a mood killer when it’s the two of them and their guitars staying up late but this ? – the works situation ? different story. “ sure. “ will blows out some smoke. “ what’s up, bud ? “ glances over to his friend, one hand in the pocket of his jacket, the other one holding the cigarette. “ fair warning though – i’m a couple of beers in. “
✦ ・his focus blurs a bit as he looks toward the street, over at the building across from them. his eyes don't look at will, but he listens. jude was good at that, listening. advice ? probably not, but he had two good ears and he sure as hell used them. “ totally — i'm exhausted, too. that never fucking helps, ” he let out a sigh, clearly annoyed by the length of the night. he let the cigarette find its place between his lips and he inhaled the sweet burn then exhaled slowly. “ no worries at all. who isn't at this place ? ” he teased, the stick resting between two fingers. “ i've had a rough few nights with ewan. he's not sleeping well. he can't seem to stay in his own bed. i know you don't have kids, man but i'm at a lost here. y'think could the move have been too much for him ? his mother isn't here and i'm sure.. i'm sure that's taking a toll. "

𓂅 𐫱 ❛ she was still adjusting to life in the town, more so, she was still trying to familiarize herself with the people she came across. carly was not accustomed to seeing familiar faces so frequently. taking a stroll down the streets of dauntridge was vastly different than walking in california. thus far, most of the people she'd met had been kind, jude included. nobody there seemed to carry themselves with arrogance, and she truly loved that. this place was a beautiful change of pace for her, and she was soaking up every moment. “ i get what you mean by that, ” she empathized, a slight nod following her words. she fully understood how his thoughts could operate that way. anxiety was not an easy thing to deal with, and she knew that all too well. “ hey, as long as you don't give up hope … it'll happen for you eventually, ” she told him, doing her best to remain encouraging. she nodded at his words, listening carefully. “ is it busy in there tonight to at least keep you busy ? or is it just one of those nights ? ” she questioned.
✦ ・he understood the allure of dauntridge all too well. it was a kind town and it welcomed him with open arms. at least, that's what it felt like. he and ewan needed the change. at times, jude felt like he was running away and other times he felt like it was simply a fresh start. him and his son needed to get away from the bullshit that revolved around his ex. he didn't let it affect his time in town, either. anxiety was a damning thing, too. he dealt with it on a daily basis and he absolutely despised it. brows furrowed at the thought of his own anxiety, but when the woman spoke — he couldn't help but direct his entire focus onto her, to listen. “ it's not too bad in there. we get a lot of people who need to vent and, yeah — sometimes i can't handle it. i needed a breather from it, is all. not sure if that makes me a terrible person or not, but god. it's difficult when your mind isn't in a good place to be an ear for someone.. or three in one night. ”
𓂅 𐫱 ❛ fortunately for carly, she knew what it was like to have a kind hearted boss. she genuinely liked celeste, and she got the sense that most people in dauntridge shared the same sentiment. kind people were not always easy to come by, and she knew that from her own experiences. carly loved that she always felt appreciated by her boss, because she knew that many people certainly did not. she'd seen and heard many horror stories regarding the worst possible bosses out there, and felt fortunate she'd never experienced it for herself. “ thank you, celeste, ” she said, her smile bright as ever. it meant a lot to her, knowing the woman thought she was amazing. carly felt the same way about celeste. “ i'm glad you think so, ” she told her, a soft laugh escaping her lips. “ i've been making coffee for such a long time, so it's nice to know my skills haven't gone unnoticed. ” she was rather passionate about her coffee after all. she could appreciate effort put into decorating. seeing the decorations around the shop reminded her a bit of home, considering her own mother always went all out on decorating. she knew where she got that from. “ it does. i had to go all out for my first halloween here, ” she told the other proudly. carly nodded at her words, smile still present on her features. “ oh ? now you've got me really curious, ” carly told her, intrigued. “ i bet it looks amazing. ”
✦ ・the full moon was supposed to be a safe space. whether it be for her employees or her customers, it was meant to offer comfort. she was glad to know that carly felt sense of it when working with celeste. it truly made all the hard work worth it. she loved the book shop with all of her being and she'd do anything to keep it maintained and running. good people like carly helped make it happen. smiling over at the young girl, she couldn't help but to feel joy. “ you're so very welcome, dear, “ she spoke with that same smile. despite their age difference, they were friends and cel adored it. the coffee was good and cel took, yet, another sip of the warm liquid. it was refreshing and soothing. it was definitely a need after a long day of working. “ please, i'll forever compliment your ability to make coffee. especially if you keep making it for me, “ her nose wrinkled as she chuckled, teasing at carly. “ but yes, it's very good, ” she spoke more seriously, though that grin did not fade for a second. “ would you like to come by sometime ? i wouldn't mind. i don't get visitors that often ! i'll return the favor, too — i'll make you a cup of my favorite brew. ”
𓂅 𐫱 ❛ ryan knew it probably looked pretty bad, spending as much time at the bar as he had when he wasn't even working, but he didn't care. he doubted anyone would find the courage to say anything to his face, and if they somehow did, he wouldn't react kindly. he had a reputation of sorts, of course. he didn't back down, he wasn't someone who cowered away from a confrontation. he did as he pleased, and he wouldn't stop doing that to appease anyone else. if people didn't like his decisions, they could keep it to themselves or regret saying anything to his face. ryan looked at him skeptically for a moment, head shaking slightly. “ well, i get needing a break, ” he told him, shrugging. ryan took frequent breaks, dipping out to have a quick smoke or breather when he had someone else there with him or when there were no patrons. “ okay, well, that's probably for the best, ” he said, nodding. not that he'd care if jude did judge him anyways.
✦ ・when starting the job at the pub, jude was secretly given an idea of who ryan was simply through the whispers that formed such a reputation. he didn't judge him, no. he couldn't. there was no way that jude wanted to assume the worst out of someone he didn't know. that didn't mean he was pushing to be his friend or to know him, but regardless of what had been said, jude was going to respect him. he expected respect back, too. as long as that was silently noticed, then all would be good. so, even while ryan spent a lot of time at the bar whether clocked-in or not, jude didn't judge nor minded. “ it's loud in there tonight. i have a lot on my mind, ” he also shrugged, not bothering to further the statement. “ i suppose so. ”
𓂅 𐫱 ❛ books were just not his thing, neither were people. still, ryan knew that at some point, he was required to deal with people whether he liked it or not. perhaps if he hadn't been so hellbent on at least attempting to fix his issues on his own, he wouldn't have even put himself in this situation. he was just too stubborn and didn't want to deal with even more people. he didn't like his space being invaded. ryan nodded slightly, following the woman as she lead him to the proper area of the shop. “ uh, how to fix a sink. ” he wouldn't get into all of the details of it, as he didn't feel like it, and she probably didn't want to hear it, either.
✦ ・she understood that books didn't have the same appeal for others, but she loved them. they were her favorite hobby. that much was known by the entire town, as her store reflected that adoration. it helped that the townsfolk supported the creation of full moon, too. it was a comforting thing to experience. she liked the people in dauntridge. more often than not, they were kind. ever since moving, everyday started to feel worth it all. “ okay, let me see, ” eyes scanned the row of books, pulling out a fix-it-yourself book that specialized in kitchen and bathroom plumbing and handing it over to ryan with a small smile. “ look through this, ” she offered.
the rain was close to soaking through the pair of sneakers on her feet. it’s early. not too early, more so too late … 10ish am ? much earlier, much later than it should be considering she’d worked the bar all night and was only now on her way back home. mm, the thought of home– of a shower, of her bed … frustrating to find herself stumbling into the book shop instead, seeking shelter from the pouring. hopefully it’d stop in a moment. “ hey … “ seren grinds out between her teeth. “ sorry i– … just browsing. the rain is crazy today … “
✦ ・a nod was given towards the other woman, her smile not disappearing as she tried to keep the vibe as a welcoming one. “ no worries ! let me know if you need any help, okay ? ” she promised, shoving a book in its new place. slowly, cel was unpacking new inventory. it was tedious sometimes, but her organization was important. she looked over to the windows, eyes squinting a bit as a reaction to the rain. “ it has gotten pretty bad out there, wow. any idea of when it'll calm down ? ”

𓂅 𐫱 ❛ she knew not everyone was like her, that some people truly valued being alone. carly might not have fully understood why, but she was respectful of it. she smiled, a slight nod following. “ okay, cool, ” she replied. she liked keeping people company, she was someone who valued being in the presence of other people. it wasn't her place to comment on his smoking habit, even if she knew it was absolutely terrible for him. she wouldn't judge him, she knew that wasn't her place. if he wanted to smoke, he was allowed to do that. after all, he was a grown man who was more than capable of making his own decisions. “ you don't need to apologize to me, ” she assured him. sure, it was a kind gesture, but she found it entirely unnecessary. carly listened intently, knowing full well how difficult it was to walk away from bad habits. “ don't give up on trying to quit. maybe one day it'll be easier, ” she told him, a sincere smile forming on delicate features. “ i'm okay. i can't really complain. how are you ? ”
✦ ・he didn't mind either or, to be alone and to be in the presence of others. as a father, he didn't get to be alone often as his spare time was spent caring for a toddler. it was a life of getting used to, but he took in every moment of it, loving his son more than anything in the entire world. on the rarity of being alone, jude didn't mind it and he didn't necessarily mind someone coming into view, no. he was slowly getting to know the people of dauntridge, so he accepted any sort of company from those who lived within city limits. “ i worry that i'm a nuisance with it, but that's my own anxiety trying to poke at me, ” he let out a small laugh, trying to keep the smoke from wafting in the other's direction. “ it's harder than I thought, but.. one day, ” there was a nearly sigh there, but he swallowed it. smoking was something he picked up as a teenager and never really tried to stop it. “ i'm great. i'll be even greater once this shift ends, ” a thumb extended to gesture back to the pub behind him. “ got a couple of hours, i'm counting down the minutes. ” in truth, he wanted to see his son.
the bar was a place where jensen went when she had a tough day at work. the alcohol was something she used to ease her mind. it probably wasn't the best coping mechanism but whatever helped, right? the surgeon had grown to know half of the bartenders and workers there, she considered them her friends. maybe a few of them but not many. whoever made her drink right on those shitty nights were a friend. jesen was looking for jude, and the brunette found him outside smoking a cigarette. something she also used to do as a coping mechanism. taking a deep breath she pushed her hair out of her face "you have an extra one of those?" she questioned while raising her eyebrows and then folding her arms across her chest "what's going on, is everything alright?"
✦ ・he met all kinds of people. from locals to tourists, jude was an ear to plenty of persons. he didn't mind it. he expected it upon becoming a bartender. sometimes he needed it, too. he didn't judge nor would he ever, everyone had their issues and if talking helped, he'd listen. simple as that. sometimes, however, he needed a small break from it. hence why he took a spot in front of the bar with a cigarette between his fingers. when she asked for one, he nodded and reached for the pack in his back pocket. “ here you go, ” he offered her one then a lighter to follow. “ that's been giving me a hard time. if you have trouble i can grab some matches from inside, ” a figure gestured to the door. “ but, i'm good — yeah. i needed a bit of a breather. you ? are you doing okay ? ” he asked with geninue concern.
jensen was looking for a good book to read. she hasn't read anything in quite sometime and the brunette knew there were many good books out right now. full moon book store was one of her favorite places to go to in town aside from the bar and having some time before work, she found herself walking in. it was early, really early and jensen smiled softly and said "thank you!" she pushed her hair out of her face and continued with "ive been in a huge reading slump, do you have any suggestions? i mainly read thriller, but i think i want to get into fantasy?"
✦ ・seeing a frequent customer was always a wonderful thing. she felt a feeling of accomplishment, too. if someone kept coming back, she was doing something right. “ reading slumps are the absolutely worst, yeah, ” celeste spoke as a sigh followed. “ it's a real struggle, ” was continued as she gestured over towards a general area, hoping that jensen followed. “ our fantasy section is one of our biggest. there's a lot here. i try to get what's popular— especially on booktok. ‘a court of thorns and roses’ is one of our populars. as well as ‘fourth wing’. "
“i was just looking for you. noticed you weren't in your usual spot at the bar.” keira points out. she pulls a cigarette and a lighter from her purse, then lighting her own cig before putting the lighter away. she immediately noted that he seemed like he had a lot on his mind -- which wasn't unusual, for him. “tell me what you're thinking.”
✦ ・" was due for a break. “ he spoke plainly to kiera, a half-smile given as she approached him. “ i didn't know you were around tonight. how'd i miss you ? “ jude let out a small chuckle before taking another inhale of his cigarette, exhaling the smoke only for a cough to interrupt promptly after. ” thinking about ewan— like always. i worry i can't provide for the kid. i'm struggling. "
𓂅 𐫱 ❛ carly never minded staying after hours, she found the bookstore to be quite peaceful when it was just her and celeste. of course, she enjoyed their customers as well, but there was something different about the near - emptiness. being surrounded by books and a boss she admired was quite the experience. she knew there were countless people with long lists of complaints about their bosses, and she felt fortunate that she wasn't one of them. she grinned at the woman's words, a low laugh escaping shortly after. “ you know, i might've started to lose count, but it doesn't mean i'll ever get tired of hearing it. ” she teased. carly nodded at her words, glad she could be of assistance. “ you know, i've always felt like coffee is just one of those things that can almost always guarantee to pick up someone's mood. ” that was, of course, assuming the person in question was a coffee drinker. which, she didn't know how someone couldn't be. carly pursed her lips, studying the area carefully. “ no, not at all. i think it's the perfect amount of decor, ” she told her, the words sincere. “ i do, too. my apartment looks like jack skellington threw up all over it, ” she said with a laugh.
✦ ・the company of one's employee might've been a drag at other places of business but it wasn't like that here. celeste adored carly, all of her employees, with a big, honest heart. she was clear about what she wanted done and they all listened. besides, it was nice to have somewhat of a personal relationship with the employees that wanted to have one. she didn't force it, no. it just made it feel like they were close, like family. she liked that. family was important to her. carly was definitely family. “ well, i one-hundred percent mean it ! you're amazing. ” her smile remained itself upon her features, keeping the mug close to her lips before taking, yet, another sip of the warm drink. “ this is a good coffee, ” she commented as eyes kept themselves on the display of books with a touch of autumn. the display itself consisted of books that revolved around fall, halloween— just to stay in season. “ does it, now ? i may have you beat with my house, but that'll be a score we'll have to settle later, ” celeste teased, definitely joking. “ i need the girls' help with putting some more things out around the living room, but otherwise my house is all decorated ”
