Consuls of the Social War
Lucius Marcius Philippus( consul 91 BC)
Sextus Julius Caesar( consul 91 BC) won an important military victory, probably over the Paeligni. He died of disease in 89, while laying siege to the city of Asculum.
Lucius Julius Caesar( consul 90 BC) defeated the Samnites, after suffering losses at Aesernia, Accerae, and Teanum. Killed along with his brother while fighting in the streets in 87 BC at the beginning of the Civil War by partisans of Gaius Marius the Elder.
Publius Rutilius Lupus( consul 90 BC) received a fatal wound to the head fighting the Marsi alongside Gaius Marius while crossing the river Liris.
Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo( consul 89 BC) commanded Roman forces against the Italian Allies in the northern part of Italy. His three Roman legions were instrumental in Rome's victory. Killed by a disease that had broken out in his army in Rome where he was staying after responding to the Senate's request for help against the forces of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Cinna in 87 BC. His cruelty had made him so hated by his men that they tore his corpse from the bier and dragged it through the streets.
Lucius Porcius Cato( consul 89 BC), while praetor in 90 BC was given a propraetorial command and defeated an Etruscan army which had joined late to the social war. After becoming consul, Cato was given command of the northern theatre of war against the Marsi tribe and managed to inflict a defeat on them early on. However, near the end of another battle with the Marsi at Fucine Lake, while fighting alongside Gaius Marius the Younger, Cato was killed, leading to a Marsic victory.
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix( consul 88 BC) captured Aeclanum in 89 BC, the chief town of the Hirpini, by setting the wooden breastwork on fire. Sulla served exceptionally as a general during the Social War. At Nola he was awarded a Corona Graminea (Grass Crown). This was the highest Roman military honour, awarded for personal bravery to a commander who saves a Roman legion or army in the field. The crown, by tradition, was woven from grass and other plants taken from the actual battlefield.
Quintus Pompeius Rufus( consul 88 BC) was instrumental as Sulla's colleague, putting him back in charge of the war against Mithridates, passing a series of laws and expanding the senate. The Senate then gave Pompeius the proconsular command of the ongoing Social War, with specific instructions to take over the armies of Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo, who was fighting the war against the Marsi tribe in the north. Unwilling to give over his command, he incited a mutiny during which Pompeius Rufus was killed.
