Gatsby
Beginning by calling it great doesn't feel quite right. Whilst I half-expect Carey Mulligan to burst into another melancholic rendition of ‘New York, New York’, there’s that certain je ne sais quoi about what’s been released so far in terms of trailers and teasers for The Great Gasby, and it’s somehow left me feeling tepid about Luhrmann’s latest endeavour. Is it going to turn out to be one of those movies with a lot of (visual) bang and not much substance? Devoid of certain nuances, even after a pinch of two minutes and a half, it’s feeling a little flat. I couldn’t help thinking about how what I was watching was more like Idlewild, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and most of all Scorsese’s The Aviator after they fallen out of a cinematic blender. On a more positive note, the soundtrack sounds promising. With everything from Florence + the Machine to Lana Del Rey and Beyoncé covering Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; pop ears are probably in for a treat. If you ask me however, the one overwhelming reason I’ll be off to watch it is for the costumes designed by Miuccia Prada, what else? The Great Gatsby is out in most of Europe around May 15th.
