My character design for book accurate Annie. In the book series she is described having “brown flowing hair” and “sea green” eyes (Catching Fire Ch. 14, Mockingjay Ch. 12)

After reading SOTR I definitely think there’s more to her games than what we heard about in the original trilogy.

Made the mistake of watching some Hunger Games video essays and ended up hyperfixating again! Wanted to show how young Katniss and Peeta were in the first book, and how three books worth of trauma not only mentally but physically changed them.

ok i really like this scene but i wrote it over a year ago and i think my take on johanna has shifted enough that it wouldn't fully work anymore. something like this is still going to happen, but probably not this specifically. so i'm here to introduce you to my darling before i kill it.

the aftermath of the event which causes johanna's entire family to die (finnick's pov).

Finnick is roused in the middle of the night by a knock on the door. This causes him an immediate and directionless dread. It’s not uncommon for him to be woken up in the middle of the night for one reason or another, but those reasons are almost never pleasant. The best they get is annoying, and some of the worst things that have ever happened to him have knocked on his door in the odd hours of the morning. There's no telling what this is about, though, so he doesn't bother to guess. He simply gets up, and goes to see. 

At first, he doesn’t see it. He just stands there and waits for Johanna to tell him what the hell she wants at three in the morning. It’s dark, and he’s groggy. Colors are difficult to tell apart from each other. 

Johanna says, “I fucked up.”

He notices how hard she’s breathing. He notices that she’s half-dressed, which, sue him, didn't flag immediately as noteworthy. 

He brushes past her, using one arm to push her behind him and into the room as he scans the hallway up and down. Empty, but that doesn’t mean she wasn't seen. 

And then he sees the blood. 

“I didn’t–” she’s saying, “I didn’t mean to, but I didn’t– I wasn’t– Oh, fuck.” She sits down heavily on the couch. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.”

“Johanna.”

He doesn't want to get too close to her. Looking at the set of her shoulders, the blood on her face, he knows better than to make her feel cornered. She’s all wolfish fear. 

“I didn’t– Fuck, Finnick, I fucked up. I fucked up so bad, I–”

“Tell me what happened.”

For lack of a better place, he sits on the coffee table a couple of feet away from her. That, at least, will leave her escape routes open and carries no risk of accidentally touching her. 

She gives an awful, hiccupping laugh. It sounds a little like she’s gasping for air, like she’s been drowning, but then it turns into a low, plaintive giggling, breathless. This lasts for several long seconds. “I told you,” she says, when she’s regained some control of her chest. “I told you what happened. I fucked up. I fucked up like you wouldn’t believe. Oh, you’re gonna get a fucking kick out of this one, Odair, you fucking wish you were me, oh darling, you’ll be positively green.” For the last bit, she slips into an affected Capitol accent. And then she starts giggling again. 

“Jo,” he says. “Whose blood is that?”

Well. Fuck. 

“I don’t remember his name,” she says, still laughing in a way that sounds like it hurts. He wonders if it’s the despair that makes it sound that way, or if she’s cracked a rib. “I don’t learn their names.”

“Listen to me. Jo, this is important. I can try to help you fix it but you need to tell me what happened. Is he alive?”

She meets his eyes for the first time. It takes a lot to disconcert Finnick Odair, but in the dark, Johanna’s face looks hollow, deeply shadowed. She’s blood-splattered and wild, and he can see the faintest impression of tear tracks on her cheeks. She’s smiling like a jackal, all teeth. “Can you fix that?” she asks. “Can you fucking fix it?”

She shrugs. “No? Maybe? I think he was when I left but it was–” she laughs again, squeaky and gaspy, thick in the lungs– “It was bad, Finnick, it was– It was really bad. It was almost good enough. So fuck, maybe he’s dead now. Maybe he died.” 

He sighs. The outlook is bad. If the client died, the outlook for Johanna’s entire family is very bad indeed, but this doesn’t seem the time to confirm that to her. “I’ll talk to Snow,” he says. “If I get to him first then maybe I can convince him–”

“Convince him.” She sounds like she’s choking on it. “You gonna fuck him, Finnick? You gonna fuck him for me?”

“Oh,” she says. “Oh, I know.” She sniffs loudly. “You know what? Fuck it. Don’t do anything.”

“I–” Snow doesn’t, as a rule, partake. But that doesn’t mean he won’t, if he thinks he can get something from it. Could this be tactically important, somehow? Will Snow deem it a necessary power trip? He isn’t sure. “I’ve done worse for less.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Fuck it. It’s done. You can’t do anything, anyway, we both know that. We both know there’s nothing you can do. That’s the problem with you, you’re so convinced that you can fix things, like there’s some kind of power here if you can just figure out how to use it, but there isn’t, there never was, and you’re gonna be licking their shit off the floor for the rest of your life. My family is dead and I’m off the hook and there’s nothing either of us can do about it. I killed someone. I finally killed someone they gave a shit about. There’s no taking it back. And there’s nobody left to save.”

Finnick feels as if he’s seeing her, finally, for what she is. He remembers her reaching out with the side of her tongue to lick another girl’s blood off her cheek. He remembers the little girl who answered the phone that day he called her house, the raucous shouting audible in the background. You fucking wish you were me, she said, and now he understands what she meant. Was she right, though? Does he envy her this? But that question makes him feel like his skull is being ripped in half, so he puts it away with the others. 

For a while, there is silence. He thinks about what to do next. He’s good at figuring out what to do next. 

Finally, “Are you hurt?” 

She huffs, dismissive and humorless. 

“Physically.”

She doesn't look at him as she holds out her palms for inspection. Finnick looks at them, tries to discern how badly they’re hurt—it’s hard to tell, in the dark, which blood is hers. Eventually he gives up and is forced to turn on a light. 

When he returns to Johanna, he sits beside her on the couch, and when she holds her hand back out, he takes it gently by the wrist to hold it still. She allows both of these things without bristling, which is either a good sign or a very bad one. 

Her hands are cut to ribbons. There are flaps of her skin pulling loose, raised edges beginning to swell. Something thin and sharp has been digging into her hand and fingers at an angle, burying itself in the meat of her right palm. The bleeding has mostly stopped, but it looks like it could start again at the slightest pressure. 

“Broken glass?” 

She nods. “A mirror broke. He knocked me over, and I flailed—I think. I grabbed the glass.” 

“Do you think any of it flaked off in your skin? Do your nail beds feel alright?” 

“I have my own stuff, Jo, I can patch this up here. I just need to know if there are any microshards in you.”

“It doesn't matter. I'm not going to Remake. I'm not going to fucking Remake after tonight.”

At this point in the story they've released three studio albums, the last of which catapulted them into the spotlight after huge commercial success. They've been stuck doing two-year album cycles due to the demands of Captiol Records, and are struggling massively with burnout and nonstop touring. In addition to this, just before their second album they were involved in a crash that resulted in Peeta becoming an amputee and developing an addiction to morphling. There are rumours that he and Katniss are sharing hotel rooms but both refuse to comment on it, which is a problem because he's also rumoured to be dating the model and high profile activist Madge Undersee, and then of course there is the fabled 'Mockingjay' who shows up in the lyrics of every album but has no confirmed identity.

The fourth album is called Sureau Mortel, which is French for 'nightlock' and references an old story of the star-crossed lovers choosing to doom themselves rather than be apart. The album's themes revolve around bad decisions and unhealthy relationships with the media and themselves.

Peeta takes the creative lead in all their sets and mvs, so everything is from his point of view.

Dr Morphling: Katniss is the ringleader, or Master of Ceremonies, as her voice controls the show (and she controls him). Her character takes the form of his addiction, someone who is both capable of soothing pain and making everything shiny and golden, but also creates an unhealthy dependency and devastating comedown every time she pulls away. Although the identity of the Mockingjay hasn't been confirmed, the way he describes the character to Portia makes it pretty obvious, so there's plenty of bird motifs throughout her design.

Mr Nightlock: The loyal dog and court jester, the feral mutt and the fool. Peeta acts the clown so Katniss won't have to be in the spotlight, and both loves and resents the career he's made for himself - one that involves carving out pieces of himself with every song, with only a thin sheen of metaphor to hide his vulnerability (show with the mesh shirt - a weak defence that's full of holes). Mr Nightlock is a poison, tainting everything he touches and rotting the band from the inside out.

Al B. Tross: A stabilizing force and chronic peace-maker, by the fourth album it feels like Finnick is the only thing keeping the band together. His character is the classic strongman because the media is obsessed with his body - any time he's mentioned it's not for his musicality but his sex appeal. Much like the birds killed for their meat despite being a symbol of good luck, Finnick is expected to offer himself on stage night after night, and some fans have gone so far as to cross physical boundaries despite his obvious discomfort. It's had a huge impact on his mental health, and the guilt is an albatross around Peeta's neck.

Dannie the Vox: Johanna is no stranger to voicing her critiques of Capitol Records, but her anger is an impotent thing when they're still stuck in a contract with them. As such, although she is the 'voice', she's dressed as a mime, unable to speak out against the corruption in the industry or else risk getting their band blacklisted and dooming it to obscurity. Instead she rebels through action - she has multiple side projects focused on supporting indie artists and local music stores to try and break the hold Capitol Records has on the industry.

Both Katniss and Johanna are also wearing full coverage white face paint, as they are constantly having to deal with being whitewashed by the media and their own fans.
