MERLIN, 3.04
MAJOR ARCANA: BBC Merlin edition (insp.)
Remember how Gwen reacted seeing Morgana doing magic in Castle of Fyrien. She was scared, immediately ran to Gaius, she definitely perceived magic as a dangerous dark thing — all the way not knowing Morgana was against Arthur. On the other hand, she didn't give Morgana to Uther. So, Gwen and presumably Elyan are in the middle: they generally don't want people executed but they are not accepting.
this is why i said some ingrained prejudices are not out of character — i also think that by that time she had noticed that the morgana who returned is different from the morgana she used to know before (with the way she was making a habit of coldly snapping at gwen for just doing her job), and she must have also been unsettled by morgana smiling in this exceptionally wicked way as she performed the magic… i said gwen is canonically one of the most accepting of magic out of all characters, which is still true, but i did not say that she is fully without prejudice.
this is also why i said that gwen’s father’s execution specifically was a shit reason for them to hate magic… but the one thing i could find believable as a reason for her to distrust magic more is morgana’s unexplained transformation, that she got to experience the effects of up close. and yet still i think the moment she learns about merlin having been born with magic she would discard her previous views on sorcery immediately … her conviction that merlin is a good person is stronger than her distrust of magic at any point in the series i think. her trust in merlin is something that seems to never once have wavered. meanwhile i do not think that was the case for morgana anymore when gwen saw her do magic in season 3… she was having doubts already
years later and i’m slowly parsing out the many-layered racism in the merlin fandom towards guinevere as portrayed by angel coulby. of course there’s the usual overzealous slash shippers who resent any female character they see as “coming between” the not at all canonically gay (white) male faves they’re shipping. of course there’s the blandly racist “guinevere is supposed to be blonde and white and and and” haters who just can’t wrap their heads around a legendary female character being played by a black woman. but there’s also a more insidious kind of racism that stemmed from fans who never spouted hateful rhetoric but disguised their racism in comments like “her character is all over the place” and “she and arthur don’t have chemistry” and “i just can’t relate to her” when what they’re really struggling with is that guinevere was written as a character that’s normally exclusively the province of white femininity. she’s beautiful, but humble and unaware of the effect of her beauty and person on people around her. she’s dutiful and kind, but speaks up for what she believes in, even at great cost to herself. she’s feminine and graceful and poised, but she also feels desire and longing, and occasionally those feelings overcome her composure and she expresses them towards arthur. she falls in love with arthur but never asks him to risk his life or his kingdom for her, instead seeing and understanding the bigger picture of keeping camelot safe. and all of this is conveyed even through the precious little screentime she’s given, because angel coulby is a brilliant actress and portrays her character’s vibrant inner life effortlessly in just a few sentences.
but (white) viewers simply cannot wrap their brains around a black female character who’s disempowered within the fictional world she occupies, yet holds emotional power over a main character - especially a white male main. they just can’t understand a black woman who exceeds the tropes they’re used to (especially in genre media): Loyal Best Friend, Sassy Cheerleader, Righteous Champion for Justice, Hypersexual Lover Coming Between White Hero and his True White Love, or Asexual Voice of Reason. white fans just absolutely couldn’t fathom a black female character daring to have layers and humanity and desire and beauty and love and strength and softness in the complex way they imagine and develop white characters who have far less growth and nuance onscreen. the relationship between arthur and merlin literally never changes from sarcasm, throwing things, deception and ribald physical humor - and yet fandom imbues this dynamic with richness and layers and depth that they imagine it must have, because it’s between two white people.
and so because guinevere evaded the tropes that both showrunners and fandom use to trap and degrade women of color characters, and because the m*erthur fans were coddled and baited to the very end by showrunners (as large white fandoms always are) these fans interpret her within the framework of whatever racist trope they find easiest to claim. guinevere calls arthur out? she’s stepping out of place, and it’s not realistic. guinevere stays quiet for the sake of duty? she doesn’t really love arthur, it’s not consistent. guinevere impulsively kisses or expresses desire towards arthur in some way? whoa whoa, that’s way too slutty, and out of character. and and and. it continues. fandom cannot bear seeing black women as fully human, so they chop and screw the bits that suit their needs and insist their interpretation is right. it’s not racist you see, they’re just pointing out facts. the racism pre-empts interpretation, so that no matter how well the character is written and portrayed, people see what they want to and are used to seeing, over and over again.
“I see her in you. You have her kindness.”

DAY 19 - kind
look i get the whole “said with love” / “he didn’t mean it that way, Merlin knows that” / “it’s just how their relationship works” defense of Arthur’s verbal (and physical) abuse of Merlin in canon, but lemme tell you: that’s not enough.
you can’t hear the same insults said in both jest and anger without realizing that yes, that person does see you that way, and they know how to use it to hurt you as easily as they use it as a tease. you’ll always be an incompetent idiot to them; whether it’s a harmless quirk or an inexcusable inadequacy just depends on how they’re feeling that day. you can’t help but start believing that they’re right.
you can’t face dismissal and criticism daily without being shocked when they throw you even a scrap of respect or appreciation. you can’t hear their praise without doubting their sincerity if it’s only given when one or both of you might die. you can’t trust that they’ll remember they ever said it the next time their temper snaps.
intentions alone don’t keep Merlin’s self-worth from being worn down to nothing by Arthur’s words & actions, and they don’t excuse Arthur for keeping it up for their entire 10 years of friendship.
Arthur should have been allowed to learn and break down the walls Uther ordered him to build around his heart. should have, could have, would have. but that’s not the Arthur we got to see in canon.
nothing gets funnier than merlin going 'hes a tyrant, hes paranoid, hes insane, he kills indiscriminately, hes a silly little despot, he spit in my face this morning' and then gaius is like 'okay but the economy is thriving'
The majority of the fandom acknowledges Merlin as Aithusa's dad, and I would argue he considers himself to be her dad as well. You know what this means? Dad jokes. Just. Constantly. No one understands why he does it, because no one knows about his secret dragon child, but almost everyone hates it anyway
fish how DARE you leave this in the tags 😤 comedy gold
okay.
i realize this might be a kind of a weird thing for me to devote time to when i’m one episode from the end but honestly? i just have to. i have to. i have a longer piece of meta in this vein that i’ll deal with some other time when i’m less focused on the end of season 5, but given the content of the last couple episodes i just - cannot restrain myself. the stunning level of deliberate, unnecessary cruelty i witnessed in that one moment yesterday (guess i was WRONG omg i STILL can’t believe i heard that with my own two ears…i probably have the lowest expectations of arthur pendragon out of anybody in this fandom but even i was shocked) - it tipped me right over the edge. it threw me for an entire loop.
so, what i have to do right now is take a second to acknowledge the one character who a) predicted this bullshit a long time ago, and b) could have been relied upon to react to it appropriately, that is to say by punching arthur pendragon in the mouth.
fig. A: my Son, ‘I Would Sell Arthur Pendragon to Satan for One Corn Chip’
i love him.
i know we only saw him once. i don’t care. he’s the only non-villain across five entire seasons of this show who ever told arthur pendragon to get fucked, and that makes him an absolute hero.
this kid snuck up on me and became my most beloved minor character. when i first met him, i liked him a normal amount, but i wasn’t as deeply invested in him as i am now. it wasn’t until i got a little further along in the show and started to see how truly painful merlin’s situation becomes without a friend who knows him that i started thinking about him again, and realized how much i actually appreciated him.
so. will.
will occupies a…fairly unique position in merlin’s circle. all of merlin’s other friends eventually become knights, or become queen, and they all hop aboard the arthur pendragon train as they get deeper entwined in camelot’s renaissance. even gwaine, who is a little iffy about arthur in the very beginning, becomes as loyal a knight as camelot has ever seen, and he’s just as invested in camelot’s flourishing as anyone. and i don’t say this to throw shade at him, or at lancelot, or anybody; those two in particular have absolutely always been true friends to merlin, regardless of the vows they took to camelot. but there is just something to be said for like - merlin does not have a single person in his life right now who cares about him without also being beholden to arthur. gwen and gaius and all of the knights are sworn to serve and protect the king. they are all fully aboard the arthur pendragon train, and on board with merlin’s mission to aid arthur and keep him safe. gwen, gwaine, gaius, lancelot - even merlin’s own mother is on that train, when she tells merlin he has to go back to camelot at the end of 1.10, saying “you belong at arthur’s side. i’ve seen how much he needs you.”
these people would not argue with merlin over the merits of sacrificing things for arthur, because they, too, would do anything for their king. they wouldn’t necessarily challenge merlin on statements like “his life is worth a hundred of mine,” because they understand what merlin means. they’re on that same page.
and that’s nice and all, but given recent events (and forthcoming events, i suspect) i suppose i just am feeling. a little tired of that.
i’m tired of the arthur pendragon train. i want to get off. i want MERLIN to get off. and the only other person in the world who ever believed that merlin deserved to get off the arthur pendragon train was will.
all the most recent episodes i’m watching are highlighting for me once again how little merlin settles for in his life. he can’t be known. he can’t be seen. he can’t be accepted. he can’t be listened to. he can’t be believed. he can’t be respected. he can’t be safe. he can’t be loved. he can’t say ‘i am sorry that i can’t go with you to this place’ (for the first time in HOW many years?) without receiving a deliberately nasty, cutting slap across the face.
and we try to rationalize this away; we try to look at the good parts (and yes, there are good parts, of course there are good parts; of course arthur and merlin care about each other) but the ultimate truth is that arthur isn’t merlin’s real friend, not yet. he thinks he is. but he isn’t. a real friend isn’t someone who might kill you if they knew who you were. a real friend isn’t someone who makes you feel like you have to pretend to be someone you’re not.
you cannot be loved if you aren’t safe.
the only person who ever acknowledges this dynamic is will. will sees the parts of arthur that merlin tries not to look at, and will loves merlin enough to say ‘this situation you are in is messed up.’ he’s the only one, across five seasons of this show, who ever comes right out and says that merlin is fooling himself when it comes to this ‘friendship.’ merlin might have other people who care about him, later, but all of them are as wrapped up in arthur’s well-being as merlin is. they don’t tell merlin he deserves better. they don’t tell merlin ‘this is shitty. this is a shitty situation you’re settling for. you deserve more than this.’
five seasons, and will is the only person who ever says this. merlin’s own mother won’t tell him this.
i’ve been thinking about will kind of a lot as i watch these episodes.
i think…i think will would lose his mind if he could see merlin at the end of this show. at ANY point in this show, practically. he would be so devastatingly angry. if he ever heard “his life is worth a hundred of mine” come out of merlin’s mouth - i mean. he’d kill somebody. he’d thump merlin upside the head and then go kill somebody.
will was only ever in this for merlin. he didn’t save arthur’s life because he’d started to like the guy; he did it because that’s just who he is. he saw someone about to get shot and his first instinct was to get in the way. he’s not riding the arthur pendragon train, and he’s certainly not riding the camelot train, but he still makes sure merlin can go safely back to the citadel, because for some unfathomable reason, merlin seems to feel that it’s important.
because - and this is so important here - will doesn’t even know anything about merlin’s ‘destiny.’ they didn’t have time to talk about dragons or destinies or any of that. all will knows is that it’s important to merlin, for whatever reason, and that’s enough to make it important to will. even though he doesn’t understand it. even though he doesn’t agree with it. even though he personally thinks arthur’s a loser. he does what he does so that merlin can have what he wants, so that merlin can be safe and happy in the city of his choice.
SAFE and HAPPY. and merlin isn’t either of those things. merlin has never been less safe than he is now. and merlin hasn’t been happy for a very long time.
will would be rolling over in his grave if he could see merlin now. he would have fought against the sort of…slow self-immolation we see merlin surrendering himself to here every step of the way. will told a prince to fuck off in front of the entire population of ealdor; he wouldn’t have any qualms about telling ‘destiny’ to get stuffed, either. and i find myself missing that single-minded devotion, that uncompromising affirmation of merlin’s intrinsic worth, as opposed to merlin’s importance as a prophesied figure out of myth, as the skies darken over merlin’s head and i see him getting ready to (i think) do something that would send will into an absolute rage.
none of merlin’s friends or family have ever wanted him to suffer, but will was the only one who saw where this was going, a long, long time ago. he knew from the beginning that it wasn’t right. and like…people can complain about him refusing to jump on board the arthur+merlin ship all they want, but the reason he doesn’t get on that boat is because he’s always been captain and sole passenger of the HMS Merlin, and he is the only one who has ever understood that these two boats, with the way the world works right now, just can’t sail together. so much would have to change first.
so like…i miss this kid. i really do. and i think merlin misses him, too, but not in a way that he can afford to let himself think about. how can a person in merlin’s position afford to remember someone who always thought that merlin’s happiness and safety were more important than anything, when merlin has, by necessity, spent all these years forcing himself to finally accept that his own happiness and safety will always have to be his last priority? how can he handle being reminded of a time when someone unconditionally believed that merlin deserved to live in this world and be happy, not because of what merlin could do or what great purpose he would serve, but simply because he is. just because he exists. because he’s enough as he is. he matters just as he is. he deserves to be safe and happy just because he is, not because of what he can do for his majesty the prince.
i don’t think someone in merlin’s position can afford to think like that, especially now. i think it’s like - when you’re overwhelmed or stressed or upset and you’re holding it together but then somebody does one simple nice thing for you or gives you a hug and that’s when you lose it and start bawling - it feels like that. i don’t think merlin could handle being gentled in that way. i think it would be similar to when gwaine tells him “not arthur” - that inability to conceive of somebody who only cares about him, who puts him first. i think if merlin allowed himself to remember that there was in fact a time in his life when he was someone’s first priority, if he remembered what that felt like - he would crack right down the middle.
i think if someone were to really remind him of what he deserves from this life, to remind him of what he used to hope he would one day have, he would never be able to do what he thinks he needs to do.
anyway.
the point of all this is just that as i enter the very end of this show and see merlin still - still - being deliberately gutted by someone who is supposed to love him, someone for whom merlin has been totally willing to give up his life a hundred times over, despite never being recognized and never being accepted and never being free - it is making me appreciate even more keenly the very few people in merlin’s life who chose not to treat him that way. the very, very few people who knew him and loved him just the way he was. and in particular it makes me appreciate will, who never had eyes for anybody but merlin, and who, uniquely among merlin’s friends, could not care less about arthur pendragon if you paid him.
after the last episode, i’m just really feeling his energy.
Please don’t be angry with me.
What BBCM needed was more corrupt knights who weren’t reliant on magic to indicate their cruelty. So not Valiant or Dagr (who was only pretending to be a knight), but nobles who are villains because of their classism, their anti-magic stance, their general lack of compassion that contradicts their own code. Camelot knights or fighters from other anti-magic kingdoms, like Amata, who have nothing to do with magic because they believe it is an inherent evil.
They’re not trying to assassinate Arthur or anything like that. They’re antagonistic villains because of how their unethical values hurt the people they’re sworn to protect. They’re villains because of the very qualities that Uther’s reign encourages in them, that Arthur’s reign continues but must end. Perhaps Arthur is able to ignore their flaws that are so blatant to those suffering the abuse, up until it affects him personally. And he realizes he was warned, he just minimized the issue because he doesn’t care about those with magic, or because it’s considered “normal” to treat servants as tools instead of people.
Let this be a lead into Arthur’s own character development, where he fully realizes the effects of the laws he’s upheld, how they don’t really benefit the people at all. Bring Arthur the understanding that the real enemy isn’t just anyone who undermines his authority, but is instead something he himself has perpetuated, something he will put an end to (especially since his romance with Gwen relies on it).
Make Arthur a great king instead of just calling him one. Or if he is not meant to show this growth until the very end, then don’t justify it and minimize its effects in the meantime. Emphasize Merlin, Gwen, Morgana, and other oppressed people’s stakes in the magic ban being overturned and the working class becoming equal, because this is just as important as any Arthur assassination plot, if not more so.
No more dependency on magical means for villains. The plots-of-the-week lose meaning when they forget that people don’t become evil because they’re “corrupted” by magic, but because of their own inability to value and respect other people as their equals, whether they have magic or just the weapons Arthur provides them. And yes, involving the conflict between Merlin and his magical kin is compelling! He has to choose between Arthur—who is conflated with the greater good of his people—and another individual victim of Uther’s Purge sometimes! And he will try to resolve this by some compromise that benefits both parties, or he’ll see no way to escape the ultimatum! But that story does not rely on the “someone is trying to assassinate Arthur… with magic!” formula that is found in nearly every episode.
Show us that the reason a character is a villain is not because they’re, by default, suspicious for lying about their associations with magic or for disapproving of Arthur’s laws, but because they are doing harm to the people we’re rooting for: the magical communities that Uther traumatized, the working class who have as much worth as any noble, or even the personal life of an individual that has nothing to do with the way Camelot is ruled (without neglecting to show how this intersects with their status). Show us the distinct ways in which the core four and the round table are impacted by this. Show us just how an attack on Arthur can be construed as an attack on the people Merlin is trying to protect.
Return the life and depth to the story. Expand on the world-building. Make the individuals throughout Camelot and Albion as significant as their kings are. Create villains that are consistent with the underlying themes. Remember what each character, including the villains and antagonists, is fighting for.
just freylin. that is all. goodnight
Merlin and his totally normal non-magical dog which he introduces to everyone as his daughter
Uhhh au where Merlin glamours aithusa in to a big white dog that he just has now. He convinces Arthur to let him keep it bc it’s “stupid luck won’t keep the bandits from clobbering me over the head forever y’know” which accidentally touches on a secret fear of that exact thing happening that Arthur complies easier than expected.
It maaaay be a bit difficult to explain why the dog occasionally coughs up soot but like,, don worry bout it
Aithusa is the biggest welsh sheepdog Arthur has EVER SEEN like she’s l a r g e. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen one that completely white and wonders how exactly Merlin of all people stumbled upon such a beauty.
The knights have been on a few excursions with her and by gods does she do her job well. During one of the extraordinarily frequent bandit attacks they witnessed this dog absolutely BODY a guy and maul his sword hand to shreds, blood dripping from her muzzle onto her white fur she truly looked like a beast. Merlin made a good effort in cleaning it off- admonishing her for messy habits n whatnot
During mealtimes she targets the weaker willed knights and bullies them into surrendering their scraps. Lancelot in particular seems to have an enduring softness for her, letting her yoink larger portions of his meat directly from his plate. She seriously seems to eat several times her weight in stolen treats it’s a problem.
This dog is FAR TOO COMFORTABLE NEAR FLAMES. poor Gwen almost had a heartattck seeing her stick her face DIRECTLY INTO THE FIREPLACE OH MY GOODNESS Gwen is frantically patting Aithusa’s face with a damp cloth hiding the soot stains from Merlin
Merlin holding up Aithusia: this is my daughter
Arthur: where the hell did you get that
Merlin: hatched her out of n egg.
Arthur: gods, fine- don’t tell me. I feel like I don’t want to know anyways.
